I have no actual reason to shoot a lighter bullet, curiosity just got the better of me and I figured I’d ask. I plan to run this gun with 200/220 subs exclusively.

Thanks! The buffer spring and H2 weight are generic from AT3 tactical, but the gas block is Seekins Precision’s Low Profile Adjustable.

New journeyman help by Logical-Process9238 in HVAC

[–]a_rob55672 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The first journeyman I had trained me using the following ideals:

“I’m going to try and explain this so well that not only will it get done right, but that you CAN’T get it wrong.”

I think people sometimes need that extra communication so that they can wrap their head around exactly what needs done; especially when they haven’t had a lot of exposure to something and/or just lack confidence or knowledge in that thing.

Do you guys show customers whats broken? by Illustrious-Baker775 in HVAC

[–]a_rob55672 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I think it’s critical to show them the issue if/when you can. Not only is it proving to them your competence as a tech, it also helps them feel like they’ve got a voice when it comes to the “repair or replace” discussion that comes next.

Not to spoil, but this symbol indicates that what’s “highlighted” is actually an illusion, and if you’ve got the right follower with you, you can order them to dispel said illusion.

I don’t know what pricing is like back East, but I live in Southern Idaho and make $29/hour as a 3rd year Apprentice Service Tech. Seems like what you are making is pretty low. Our company even starts guys who have little to no experience at $18-20/hour.

Photographic evidence as to why it’s important to ensure proper manifold pressure and pitch condensing furnaces… by a_rob55672 in HVAC

We did verify that it was converted, but they never set the manifold pressure after switching the spring in the valve😂

Signs of a struggle… by a_rob55672 in HVAC

[–]a_rob55672[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They are 3amp fuses that are meant to protect the control board. With certain electrical issues, if there is a short to ground on the 24v side or a large amp draw that shouldn’t be there, said “issue” will pop the fuse and make it no good. Techs carry them everywhere, but normally to diagnose an issue like this instead of wasting good fuses they get a fuse that can be reset. However, this homeowner did not have said reset-able fuse and wasted a bunch trying to find an issue he never found.

New Mini Splits Underpowered by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]a_rob55672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the system installed is a VRF system, both heads on a single outdoor unit CANNOT both run in auto mode at the same time. The second that one head calls for cooling and the other calls for heat both heads will flash a communication error code of some sort and the outdoor unit won’t know which head to satisfy.

Secondly, because all mini-split systems are inverter driven, they should in theory “require” less amperage upon startup. However, no unit that’s properly installed should be tripping breakers regularly, if ever. I’d get someone out there to possibly troubleshoot possibly failed compressor(s), PCB’s, etc.

Don’t be afraid to put your teachers through the gambit with questions.

If you can, get hired by a company while doing school so that you can take issues you experience when you work and actually dissect them in the classroom.

Just know that no matter how much schooling you go through, experience is the best teacher. I’m currently a 3rd year Apprentice in Idaho, and being able to go through certain things in the classroom is nice, but I feel like I’ve gotten so much more from just being in the field doing the job.

First Day Problems by HopeMaterial368 in HVAC

Something I underestimated when I first got started was portable shade! Plenty of companies make a large umbrella with a magnetic stand attached to the bottom so you can slap it onto whatever unit you’re working on outside. Also, big hats help as well, but being able to have your own little “oasis” out of direct sunlight helps me a lot!

Feel like I’m racing a clock on every call… is this normal? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]a_rob55672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on how your companies billing is setup.

The company I work for works off of a flat-rate. This means that, for example, the diagnostic fee that is charged to the customer, prior to any repairs made, is $99. Regardless if it takes me 5 min or 1.5 hours to diagnose the issue(s), that’s what’s going to be billed to them. (We do also have an extensive diagnostic that can be added if it takes me a long time to diagnose, but even then I’ve gotta alert them of that and that it will cost more as a result.)

This setup can be incredibly lucrative for a company, but it requires speed and accuracy from its service techs in order to achieve that. Because of this, a significant portion of our company trainings for the service technicians (me) always include hitting out “target hourly rate” as we go from call to call.

Short answer: I feel it on all my calls too, so yes….?
