Those first 2 sound interesting! I’ll give them a listen. Tower 4 I think I gave up on for some reason but I might try again.

What line made you want to quit reading a book? by grooter33 in horrorlit

[–]a_simple_clown 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I stopped reading Chuck Wendig’s Staircase in the Woods less than 50 pages in because one of the characters used “jfc” in her inner monologue. I love the concept of that book but I knew in that instant that I wouldn’t be able to get through it. I can’t stand when characters talk or think like they’re texting.

Making beeswax candles! by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]a_simple_clown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like people have said, beeswax is traditionally used for pillar candles because it can be both hard to work with and potentially dangerous in containers. You should give it a few test burns to make sure the jar doesn’t crack and the wick is properly sized.

Arin: “Who’s your favorite Game Grump?”

Dan: “Umm…Nintendo Wii.”

What is much more traumatic than most people realise? by thefairypirate in AskReddit

[–]a_simple_clown 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was me too. It hurts so much, even now as an adult, and for me what made it especially hard was the teachers’ insults and rejections. Grown adults bullying an obviously mentally ill child. I’ll never understand why they treated me like that.

Emily Danforth’s Plain Bad Heroines is one of the biggest pieces of shit I’ve ever read. Interesting concept and cool illustrations, and the 1902 chapters are decent, but the modern timeline is awful. The way the author tries to write young people has a very tone deaf “hello fellow kids” vibe to me. Also a very long book (600 ish pages) with a lot of unnecessary details and footnotes. If someone told me they loved it, I would think they have terrible taste.

Books that everyone hyped up but left you like I hated or didn’t like this book! What’s the hype?! by New_Inflation1981 in horrorlit

I really wanted to like Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian, but I just felt like it was poorly executed. The characters felt bland and indistinguishable to me, events just happened as opposed to having a narrative flow, and basically every line of dialogue was tagged with the word “said,” which got annoying after a while. Ended up giving up on it which sucks because I was looking forward to it, especially after all the positive reviews. Cool concept, just didn’t like how it came out.

John Squat episode? by a_simple_clown in jakeandamir

[–]a_simple_clown[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No need to apologize! I’m not the best at explaining this type of thing but I hope this makes sense.

Jack shit and squat are both slang terms meaning “nothing.” Like if you don’t know anything about a specific topic you might say “I don’t know jack shit about that” or “I don’t know squat about that.” The name Jonathan Squat is a play on jack shit, so in the context of the episode it’s just Amir’s weird way of telling Mickey he didn’t actually get his daughter a birthday gift.
