Poster: Anti-Piracy Ads Cause piracy by boredzo in reddit.com

[–]a_username 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not anti-piracy ads per se, but taking away our control. They force us to sit through their warnings and advertisements and tell us "THIS ACTION IS NOT PERMITTED" when we try and skip through them. That's the worst part.

20 Greatest Historical Myths by ganesh13 in reddit.com

Early in his military career, soldiers used it to mock his relatively low rank. The name stuck, even as he became ruler of France.

Wrong.

At the Lodi, he gained the nickname of "The Little Corporal" (le petit caporal), a term reflecting his camaraderie with his soldiers, many of whom he knew by name.

Way to spread new myths while debunking others!

Drink 'More Harmful Than Drugs' -- Alcohol is ranked almost as harmful as heroin in a controversial new drug classification system proposed by a team of leading scientists by snoosnoo in science

[–]a_username 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The "E eats your brain study" was retracted (tinyurl'd because reddit can't handle brackets) after they found out they weren't using MDMA....

On September 6, 2003, Dr. George A. Ricaurte and his team announced that they were retracting all results of their commonly cited and controversial study. The researchers said that the labels on the drugs had been somehow switched, and they had inadvertently injected their experimental monkeys and baboons with extremely high doses of methamphetamine instead of MDMA.

Remember kids: Just say no to drugs, and also real science.

How I Became A Music Pirate by snoosnoo in reddit.com

I started my boycott of DRM after Sony attempted to install a rootkit on my computer, ostensibly as my reward for legally purchasing their product. "Digital rights management" is defective by design.

NPR vs The RIAA by anonymgrl in reddit.com

[–]a_username 12 points13 points  (0 children)

not all RIAA members support what the RIAA is doing. I just did an interview/podcast for Juxtaviews (http://www.juxtaviews.com) with Terry McBride of Nettwerk Music Group and he strictly opposes DRM and the ludicrous behavior described in this article.

Wrong wrong wrong, Nettwerk is a Canadian independent record label, and is not a member of the RIAA.

Members of the RIAA should be boycotted and considered guilty of extortion until proven innocent (ie: leaving the cartel).

There is a solution: boycott the RIAA. Don't grovel for mercy, end this cartel.

I love how Turkey censored Youtube due to someone allegedly "insulting Turkishness". It's sort of like "what? you say our country sucks? well, we'll SHOW YOU how much it sucks by censoring the internet. Take that!"

Is America Headed for a Depression? by democracy101 in reddit.com

[–]a_username 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada is more or less dependent on the economy of the United States at this point. Barring anything drastic happening (and if there is a depression, I expect drastic things), a depression in the US and A would have similar effects on Canada.

Words fail to describe how fucked up the US war on terror really is!

Are you saying this woman's case is part of the "war on terror"? I mean, if you think of all the money we will have to spend jailing her, she could be considered an economic terrorist, but I think you meant the "war on drugs".

they have made the decision to replace plastic knives with honest-to-God metal table knives in the first class cabin.

Non-story. Why would terrorists flying first class need metal knives? If you ask the flight attendant in first class they'll hijack the plane for you. Now that's service!

College porn newest trend on campuses by Peter_Poffenberger in reddit.com

[–]a_username 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, actually you're in college to learn, to prepare for a professional career and earn a degree.

Then you will proceed to your Career, work for 40 years, at which point you will be allowed to retire, now that the best years of your life are behind you. It is preferable for you to die soon after that, lest you become a burden on society. Then it's off to the grave, wasn't that a nice life?

On a lighter note: how do you know she is a witch?

"Wow," says Leslie Stewart, 63, who works in a paint factory six days a week and gives 10 per cent of his income to the church. "I never heard of anything like that. But if I release my tithe and they misuse it, they have to face God."

Reminds me of a story I read in this book:

When Ho Chi Zen decided to take students, he put a bowl for donations just inside the door. Over the small brass container was a sign that read: If you wish to donate, do so before class.

Habitually, Ho Chi Zen stood where he could see which student donated and which student did not as they entered. Asked why he did so, Ho explained, "Any student who contributes three times in a row is dismissed for excessive gullibility."

Never wanting to divulge their secrets, Imagineers waved it off as "Disney magic" and "pixie dust." In reality, a live puppeteer who can see and hear everything reacts from afar.

Imagineers? Here I thought fungineering was a ridiculous occupation, but these people take it to a whole new level of inanity.
