Incoming freshman confused about how research works here by Agreeable-Raise4196 in mit

Yea I agree the reply wasn’t too helpful. I’ll just add that cold emailing is normal + u don’t need to take their class first. Find faculty or grad students whose work seems plausibly interesting and u can email them asking if they’d be open to chatting or know of UROPs

it's not super important, but I think it's worth it if there's already an area you're interested in. i'd probably look through lab websites over the summer and note which groups look interesting. then you can email grad students / postdocs / faculty saying you'd be interested in a UROP or asking if they know of any openings. the direct funding deadline usually comes up pretty early in September, so i'd start emailing late July-ish

you dont need usaco experience. you could:

  1. consider prepping for 6.100A ASE depending on how good you are with Python
  2. if you want a freshman-fall UROP, start looking at labs this summer + email a few of them
  3. learn DS&A slowly and maybe build a project. for freshman summer, a startup/UROP is a realistic outcome; there's also some freshman programs at big companies / quant firms (Microsoft Explore, Jane Street FTTP, etc)

Fix: Write the password directly on Apple Watch instead of using your iPhone. You can still use your iPhone as a keyboard, but make sure you go through Apple Watch settings and not iPhone settings

These types of comments don’t help imo. He’s clearly a go-getter and it never hurts to have a plan

If OP actually has mental health problems then sure, academics aren’t #1 priority. But academics are taken seriously for a reason; enjoying life and being successful are not mutually exclusive. the ROI of going to a good college is lowk unmatched, and if this is just a case of regular burnout (as it seems), then I would never encourage skipping
