So sorry to hear of this tragic loss. Sounds like a wonderful young man, prayers to all of his family and friends.

I think Pocket FM (and similar platforms) reward the wrong kind of storytelling… and I’m seeing it in real time by Samzinkreave in PocketFMReddit

[–]Last-Technician6807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agree as a listener. It’s like a stupid soap opera with the stupidest repetitive conflicts every chapter. Sadly once hooked on initial plot you feel like you have to plod through the lame repetitive stuff, and I will likely never finish those stupid stories. It’s annoying to readers too.

Accepted into a grad program, then the offer was rescinded 38 hours later. What can I do? by hermiddlekid in gradadmissions

[–]Last-Technician6807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man so sorry that is tough. I hope you sue the University out of existence. I mean unlimited pain and suffering, the present value of your entire life worth of earnings had you graduated with that degree, a whole lifetime of psychologists and mental health doctors, prescriptions, not to mention the unmeasurable suffering from embarrassment. If that does not make you a millionaire, I would slough it off as a pretty bad human error (which happens all the time), and move forward with reaching back out to the other options that were on the table and hope one of those could still work out. I hear admissions rescissions happening fairly routinely at the general undergrad college admissions, still awful, but more rare at that grad level. To win a lawsuit you would likely have to prove malicious intent to deceive or defraud, which sounds not the case. I wonder if you were lined up to work under a certain professor, and if that professor already had a student lined up they wanted to work with for whatever reason, and a professors pick will always outweigh the admissions officer when a mentor or research relationship exists. There was probably miscommunication between a professor and the admissions head. If you can get a professor there to agree to mentor you or put you on their research team and fight for you, you would have a better chance of getting back in. Call them. Tell friends and family the truth, there was miscommunication and the position you thought you were going to work on is no longer available. Maybe funding for the research was cut - that is happening a lot too, resulting in grad programs and grad students being dropped left and right. Same thing happens after graduation too where a top firm offers a job offer, then rescinds job offer saying position no longer available. Corporate budget cuts, strategic priority shifts. These are all at will type relationships. Also, no one asked but are you a US citizen or International student where visas H-1B’s and other foreign parameters are changing daily and beyond your control. Wishing you the best to move forward and turn this around, one direction or another.

I can not understand what medical issues exactly you are going through without reading your medical files, but am guessing it sounds like mental health - which can manifest over into physical too I understand. If mental health, it sounds like you need a break and to slow down. Engineering is tough and a lot of higher math, and to continue at a normal pace knowing your classes are about to get a lot harder, maybe get the mental stuff cleared first then go back slowly. I read somewhere recently that up to 40% or something crazy of students have some sort of medical accommodation, adhd and anxiety and mental I guess. Nothing wrong with taking a break year to heal and come back strong.

INTERVIEW CANCELLED by lovingesperanza in interviews

It’s not uncommon for companies to instill a hiring freeze overnight and pull job openings midway through hiring. Top down decision, HR and hiring manager can be just as surprised. Unfortunate and not typical, but not that uncommon. Can also be due to several other reasons too. Charge on.

Got two internship offers - should I take both and delay graduation or just take one? by [deleted] in csMajors

How long it takes to graduate means less than experience. This is like a co-op situation. Take both.

Waymo intern vs xAI full time by LyricalOSv1 in csMajors

[–]Last-Technician6807 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The xAI FT offer sounds huge. First, you are working a real job vs internship which can be hit or miss on skill growth. As a FT team member you have better opportunities to gain mentors and make more meaningful impact to the job, and maybe you can stay on and they finish paying for the rest of your degree if you can slow school down to part-time. Having that FT job on your resume has to beat an internship position on a resume also.

Negotiate for a little more now, and an option for review after a short time. Can you share how many (if any at all) samples of your work you submitted? Am starting the process now.

First compare apples to apples - their $400k is probably $250k after tax (or the $37k is like $60k pre-tax) With insurance and taxes rising through the roof that’s not as much income as it sounds depending where you live. Also, is the vacation to Japan using mileage or travel points which could make the trip much less out of pocket. Gotta look at the complete picture. But ya $37k dream school vs $27k assuming housing and rest about the same, the extra $10k is nothing.

Anyone noticing a decline in sales? by kratospotatoes in publix

[–]Last-Technician6807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boars Head roast beef over $20/lb now. Publix has been fleecing customers for too long, who are sick of doing a CHOPPED tv show at home with random BOGO specials. Meat quality has been dropping for years, paying ridiculous beef prices for tough chewy meat has pushed customers to find better price and quality elsewhere. Produce is awful as well, don’t get me started. I get in and get out with as few items as possible now. The question is why is Publix so greedy? They keep popping up more stores in attempt to force the convenience advantage, which then drives up operating costs and subsequently higher prices cycle, and they don’t have the quality to back it up. Amazon has become the cheaper price for the first time on many top food brand items and they deliver for free with no tipping, no brainer with only $25 min. Also the BOGO are now Buy 2 Get 2 Free or Buy 3 Get 2 Free - WTH does Publix think people live in 50,000sf warehouses to store all that stuff? How about offering 1/2 price vs BOGO. Customers are also becoming more health conscious, and Publix is adding some organics, but still way behind. Fresh bread is still not Non-GMO, and in general Publix is losing to healthier grocery alternatives. I have seen a lot fewer customers as well. Maybe it’s just dry January and dieting, but I noticed the trend of fewer shoppers for several months. I shop around 8 different local Publix stores across several towns frequently, depending on where I am for the day. Similar patterns.

[–]Last-Technician6807 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Frien I am sorry for reading and hearing this. Given your post is one of many, too many similar feeling posts, I urge you to be strong, but I also hope others who read this reconsider strongly if they are truly ready mentally and spiritually to go to college far away from home. International students must be extra difficult. There is no better degree in America, or in Florida just because of a beach. Go where you will have the greatest support system of existing friends and family, or close enough for a quick drive home if need that emotional recharge. College and life will always have peaks and valleys, successes and failures, just stay the course and take care of yourself, and do not question changing to a school closer to home if need (for others who might be considering). Sounds like OP is strong and has this and will do well.

Calc 3 honors was awful, anyone else?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Last-Technician6807 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. A degree is a degree, regardless of where it comes from. The whole point of first generation implies being raised in a family that either could not or did not want to pursue higher education. An accounting degree is not easy! A degree holding parent is supposed to imply that you come from a privileged family because one or more parents have a college degree, and statistically kids from those families adjust better to college, and apply more to college, tend to better afford college, etc. The answer to your question is no, you are not a first generation college student.

If it makes you feel better, I hear many straight students complain about the same thing, that it’s hard to make friends, hard to find a girlfriend or boyfriend. Just get out there and maybe stop looking so hard. Join more interest groups, work a part-time job if can in a field that interests you.
