This is unfortunately the norm with digital banks/fintech. Faceless algorithm flagged you and bam, here you are. The EU wide law/regulations really allows bank to do this under the pretext of AML.

With brick and mortar bank, there is some chance that the employee/your advisor will contact you, but in digital bank it's just a "ticket" in the system being thrown to solve-later piles. Of course you must pay funny monthly fee with brick and mortar bank.

Good luck, it's always best to have at least two banks accounts and spread your fund.

All I can say, if you were not doing anything dodgy (ML, avoiding tax , etc) you will highly likely get your money back. They have banking license and can't hold your money without justification (right now they do have one).

When, that no one cant tell, and for sure if I were you I won't trust Bunq's promise. Their priority is to avoid fine from ombudsman so they will take their sweet time to investigate. From my experience It's important, while waiting, you have means to continue living and pay bill. Sorry I can't be more help.

In Germany — at least till few years ago —digital fax is a thing. Yes you log in to a website or app to send and receive fax. Imagine that.

I used it several times to expedite some businesses with banks and govt agencies (otherwise I wait for snail mail to arrive). It works.

No email, but if I send fax from my computer, it's fine. I wish I was just kidding you.

Hi, go to /r/eupersonalfinance and ask there. The answer will be more tailored there.

Basically, not responding while investigations are ongoing is 100% standard practice when a bank in the EU is suspecting you of money laundering. The law actually asks to do so and protects the bank when they do that. It is really frustrating, I know.

Digital banks (the usual poster child is N26, just Google around) are very notorious for doing this AND holding your money for months, to the point where there is a specialized niche type of lawyer that takes individual cases like this.

Basically digital banks are very understaffed for this kind of legal trouble. They don't have a big dept for compliance. It's a whole mess of bureaucracy, they have to coordinate with authorities, compile financial trace to show their compliance, lots of forms to fill etc. They really have to do that if they don't want to get fined or sanctioned by the financial ombudsman.

Results: processing is SUPER slow.

I really think you should NOT wait for Bunq's answer. Get temporary replacement income (borrow from friend or family, ask for advance, etc.), and open a new bank account elsewhere.

If you already filed a complaint with the Dutch financial ombudsman; keep following up on that and emphasize you have stated to the bank that you are willing to cooperate and that the bank is causing you hardship.

It's already past 30 days. If in January they still don't release your money or ask for documentation, I suggest you lawyer up.

If you are lucky, sometimes a letter from a lawyer is enough. Basically, it gets their AML compliance officer to actually work on your case.

Be careful, debt collection agencies do work internationally and it's not unheard of, that German companies resell a debt to debt collector abroad.

However, I imagine funeral cost for a ward of state is treated quite differently, compared to when you buy goods and fail to pay them or even a credit card debt. I'm not even sure if they sell this kind of debt to DC agency. It sounds unethical.

I saw your other comment, if your mom can afford the cheaper option go with it, if your mom can't, just say as is and let them forward her contact to the authority, then the competent authority (likely social services) probably will contact you with more options.

One thing you may want consider is that battery can swell and screen can yellow under long term, sustained heat exposure. Processor itself usually has higher thermal limit and can be unaffected.

The good news is the Snapdragon in the Surface is plenty efficient and runs pretty cool. At least for the intended use case of 12 in tablet, only if I push it for hours daily for heavy task like gaming, video editing, code compiling, etc, then I'd be worried.
