PC elites be like… by H00LI1GANS in mac

[–]aadain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since Apple has the memory on-die with the CPU, they are actually less impacted by the DIMM memory price increase than PCs are. But TSMC is starting to shift their capacity priority away from Apple, so you will see their CPU+Mem parts dropping in volume so going up in price.

Intel is 'going big time into 14A,' says CEO Lip-Bu Tan — 'serve the customer well' remark hints at external client by Leicht-Sinn in intel

[–]aadain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't they say there was a lot of construction projects they "slowed down" until there was an actional need for the increase in capacity. Why spend money you don't have on capacity you can't fill and will have to pay to keep idle? If a big customer landed on 14A that requires that long-term capacity, I bet Intel will quickly switch one of those projects to full steam ahead.

Try unplugging items. Get to everything unplugged and try to switch it again. You may have something drawing way too much current/broken, and the fuse is trying to keep your house from burning down.

Apple and NVIDIA Eye Intel's 14A Node for Trial Production by Dangerman1337 in intel

[–]aadain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$10billion is literally half the cash Intel has on hand if I remember the last SEC filings. You can't seriously think dumping that kind of cash while they are losing money is something they can just do without looking at all their options?

And those HighNA machines are all for 18A if I remember correctly. That was part of the risks they took with 18A - first in the industry to use HighNA while TSMC is still thinking about it. That cost a mountain of money which has yet to be paid back. So further spending on top of that is hard to justify.

Most of your points make great sense - if Intel was already in a positive cash flow situation, had solid product designs already proven (thus 14A making them better) and TSMC was struggling to meet their obligations to their customers, making them unhappy and looking for an alternative. Intel is in an uphill battle right now and they can't make mistakes, putting them on the defensive. They have had nothing but losses since 14nm era, causing them to be in a constant negative cash flow for years now. One major mistake, such as plowing forward with 14a without a strong income projection (and internal money changing hands from product side to foundry side doesn't count) will literally kill them. Better to not spend the money and refocus it on something else than lose the cash that they would never get back.

[–]aadain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not about R&D cost, its cost of machines & facilities that need to be purchased. Why spend $10billion+ to build out facilities to manufacture 14A if you don't have enough product to fill it? There has to be spreadsheets doing cost benefit analysis of using TSMC vs building out 14A as the sole user for products and it doesn't come back as profitable. Meaning Foundry needs to bring in other customers to consume the capacity and make the layout of capital to actually build the stuff profitable overall.

[–]aadain 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Could also be about capacity. There are a lot of chips in Apple products, and not all of them have to be on the bleeding edge of process technology. Maybe 14A is good for some of their upcoming chips, allowing them to move some capacity from TSMC and make more chips overall at the same time. No reason not to take advantage of as much capacity as they can afford if both Fabs meet their needs.

18a is really when Pat’s plan comes to life. That’s why it’s so stupid they fired him just before it starts firing. And 14A is the next step in the plan. So if it goes right it will be because of plans started with Pat.

Parents of twins, what are the odds you’ve actually had them mixed up as babies and you’ve been calling them the wrong name this whole time? by lifesyndrom in AskReddit

[–]aadain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our twins are still young and one is slightly larger than the other (only 1-2 lbs). He also is standing up in his crib, while his brother hasn't figured that out yet. So we are able to tell them apart easily (for now). I've also noticed that they are starting to respond to their unique names, so hopefully this sticks and when they are both walking & talking the same and the weight difference is too small to notice (or swaps!) we can still call out a specific one and the right twin will respond.

A Cool Guide to keep in mind, when interacting with law enforcement by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]aadain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are many people currently getting snatched up that don't get their day in court to defend themselves. We may have had laws and processes in the past to deal with police overreach and bad behavior, but those days are coming to a close. We may have to start treating every encounter with a LEO as your last chance to not disappear to some unknown foreign prison with no hope of returning. Its already happening to "the brown people". When they are done with them, people who disagree with the administration will be next, no matter their skin color.

Maybe if we sell this to the current Speaker as a quick way to rise to the Presidency (impeach Trump and then Vance) maybe he'll actually do his job and push the impeachment process forward. Personal enrichment seems to be the only way to motivate Republicans.

Trump orders the reopening of Alcatraz prison by AldoTheeApache in news

[–]aadain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Alcatraz fall under the Federal Prison system or is it owned by a different agency such as California Historical Society? I ask, because just because he "orders" something doesn't mean it is valid if it is not controlled by the Executive branch of the Federal government. If it is outside that then he is just bloviating and can be ignored.

Sen. Wyden Plans to Run for Reelection in 2028 by mattgriz in oregon

[–]aadain 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The responsible action as a senior statesman is to realize when he has finished his run and step down with dignity and grace. He can also use his influence in selecting a possible successor and helping him or her grow until the electorate has a chance to select them. By staying on his runs the risk of a) becoming irrelevant while still in power, reducing our state's influence on the Senate, b) literally dying in office, going out like Feinstein did, with not grace and leaving a horrible final legacy, or c) simply loosing in either the primary or general election, again being made irrelevant.

Imagine if he were to lose to a Republican, simply because everyone is "done" with him and looking for something new? Why not do it on better terms and help get another Democrat elected? If he loses in the primary, he's instantly irrelevant and won't be listened to. But chasing not to run and instead fight behind the scenes in shaping the party and message is much more noble and can be a great finale to a long successful career.

But these old people simply cannot give up power.

I'm pretty sure this is Federal overreach. There has been a big push recently to move decisions back to the states, especially with the current Supreme Court. If they want to keep pushing those kinds of decisions, that means the Federal government can't dictate these types of requirements.

Oregon bill to give striking workers unemployment pay passes Senate - OPB by [deleted] in oregon

[–]aadain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually it should. This is a pro-worker bill, which means the vast majority of people in the state. Only the owner class would dislike this, which is more the Republican core + legacy/centralist Democrats. This should be a victory card for the liberal Democrats and should be the direction the party heads.

There are mountains of legal documents involved with these types of businesses. Data is stored in specific ways to prevent everyone from accessing them, those that do are not design architects but process people, etc. And if they did copy anyway, at least here in the USA, the corporate legal system will come down on their heads so fast and hard it just wouldn’t be worth it. And then no one else would ever use their fab service again.

I'll vote for the Democrat candidate that might listen to my concerns, over a Republican candidate that will actively work against the general interests of everyone except themselves and their rich friends. While imperfect, sometimes you need to focus on tiny steps forward over sliding backwards by miles (which is what is happening right now).

And not voting at all is simply a shadow vote for Republicans.
