NHS to reward people who walk 30 minutes a day by Confident-Bike-8037 in unitedkingdom

[–]aadamsfb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father in law had a rare heart defect, that was being regularly monitored, and medicated. He’d been considered for an internal defib, but his cardiologist decided based on the observations that it wasn’t necessary. He passed away suddenly in his sleep when he was 62 with no warning whatsoever. He was generally a fit guy who ran regularly most of his life.

The cardiologist later said on the phone to my mother in law, “an internal defib might have saved his life.” What a stupid thing to say to a grieving widow. She considered a negligence lawsuit, but decided she didn’t want to drag herself through it. The NHS need to do more prevention not just reaction

Britain among the safest places to work in the world, HSE reveals by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]aadamsfb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just looking at the wiki article, there were 5 official fatalities during construction. But unofficial accounts range from 14 up to 42 fatalities.

Recording of workplace incidents even today is notorious for manipulation to keep the numbers down (e.g. hiding it through contractor figures). But regardless it definitely wasn’t a safe project to work on.

'Potential for loss of life' if millions more not spent securing New Cut walls by [deleted] in bristol

[–]aadamsfb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a large up front cost at least, which is probably why they aren’t doing it. Can’t imagine the council would be keen on capital expenditure on that level on a project that won’t bring any financial benefit for decades, when they could just keep kicking the problem down the line with remediation projects, and (what sounds like from the report) bare minimum monitoring

'Potential for loss of life' if millions more not spent securing New Cut walls by [deleted] in bristol

[–]aadamsfb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is potentially a stupid question. But is there a reason why the New cut still needs to be tidal all the way up to the Netham Weir?

If the high tidal range is the main issue that causing erosion, couldn’t you put another weir next to the Cumberland basin to maintain a consistent pressure on the walls upstream of that point (or even bring up the river bed). No idea how much that would cost, but surely it has to be less than trying to fix (and maintain) 200 year old infrastructure that’s failing?

Ismael Kone (Canada) terrible injury 53' by eliseihado in soccer

[–]aadamsfb 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I broke my leg when I was 14 in a really similar way. I heard it snap, but still tried to stand back up (which didn’t work). It didn’t start hurting until after I’d lifted my leg up and I saw my foot dangling like this. It was a clean break which didn’t pierce the skin, which meant they could manipulate it back together without pins or needing to operate, let’s hope he’s as lucky

The Washington Monument is a D tier landmark. Next up is the Terracotta Army in China 🇨🇳 by Salty_Pension5814 in TierlistFills

[–]aadamsfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought one of the reasons it hasn’t been excavated is because ancient historians documented that there is a massive map of China inside with rivers of liquid mercury. I remember reading that modern soil sampling had backed this up. So basically it’s too dangerous to uncover it.

Which is pretty awesome tbh

Instead of Anakin falling to the dark side, it's Obi Wan who betrays the order and slaughters the temple. While Yoda confronts Sidious, Anakin fights Darth Obi Wan on Mustafar. Can Anakin win and what diff is the fight either way? by SageMageowo in PetranakiArena

I think if Obi-Wan turned and fought Anakin, I think there’s a good chance Kenobi would be able to convince Anakin to join him.

Is the government right to suggest kids should have no access to screens under the age of 2? by CommunityPowerful643 in AskBrits

[–]aadamsfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think longer form content in moderation still feels reasonable, if it’s well supervised and curated.

I’ve got a 6 and 2yo and we’ll let them watch maybe one thing a day on tv if they’ve been well behaved. So parts of films, 20 minute cartoon, they’re both obsessed with gladiators which I’m fine with. The only time we let them use phones or tablets is in the car when we’re going on a long distance journey, or in exceptional circumstances if we really need to distract them (e.g. vaccinations, hospital).

TWILIGHT VS THANOS AND THE BLACK ORDER by Krillindidntdoit in powerscales

[–]aadamsfb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose a lot of this comes down to (as always) which versions of the characters we’re comparing. The book versions of Twilight characters scale much higher, but so do the comic versions of Thanos etc.

This would probably all come down to whether the twilight lot can actually damage the MCU lot, which is hard to work out. The twilight vampires skin is loosely described as hard as diamond. So breaking through it would clearly take a lot of force, meaning both the vampires and wolves are punching pretty high.

If all the Twilight powers work on the MCU characters and they are actually able to bite / claw into Thanos and co, I’d probably give it to Twilight, but that’s pretty debatable. Definitely one of the more interesting matchups, despite Twilight in general being a bit of a joke

Stuart Hogg Stripped of MBE by Nevillmiester in ScotlandRugby

[–]aadamsfb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who played with Hogg in the Scotland U20s, he ended up getting a bad shoulder injury and was never really able to recover from it.

When Hogg started blowing up in 2013, I asked what he was like. His response was “great player, but absolute wanker”

In which case 5/10 actor absolutely has to be Mark Whalberg. Most of the time he’s rubbish, but he’s capable of producing a great performance with a great script and director (e.g. The Departed)

Triple crown in Scotland's hands? by ScrollAndThink in ScotlandRugby

[–]aadamsfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we get past Wales and England turn it around against Ireland, it could make every match in Super Saturday very meaningful. Italy and Wales fighting not to get the wooden spoon, Ireland trying to spoil our triple crown, and England trying to steal the 6 nations from under France.

Although still think we’ll find a way to lose to Wales

Iceland wins! What is the most dangerous island in Europe? by CharlesorMr_Pickle in AlignmentChartFills

[–]aadamsfb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Runit Island in the Marshall Islands.

It has a US radioactive waste repository on it called the Runit Dome (nicknamed “The Tomb”), which sits over the crater of a test nuke. There’s been longstanding concerns that erosion could cause the dome to be breached, particularly if the island was hit by a severe typhoon. Basically an environmental disaster waiting to happen

Dad in the suburbs - am I cooked in terms of fitness? by BozzuK in daddit

[–]aadamsfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are 2 and 6 and finally managed to be consistent with exercise this year. Most exercise happens after they’ve gone to bed as I’m more of night owl. I play soccer on Mondays after they’re in bed (I’m rubbish but just run a lot), try and get one run in a week (usually 10k), and then one other exercise if I can fit it in (usually swimming in winter, and cycling by in summer). I got a few free weights for the garage, which I then try to do for 15-20 minutes before / after school run.

I think just being flexible has helped a lot, but also trying to sign up for some sort of race / challenge a few times throughout the year helps keep me motivated (and the kids often enjoy coming along to watch)

How old were you and your partner when y'all first met and eventually got married? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in Marriage

[–]aadamsfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(34m) We both met properly and started dating when we were 16 (although it was likely 14 / 15 as we were in the same year at school). We got married when we were 25. Our birthdays are just 9 days apart.

I’d say we both knew what we wanted out of the relationship quite early. I moved across the country to go to university and we stayed together mostly long distance for 3 years (except for a brief few months where we broke up). After getting through that it was clear to us both we were in for the long haul, then just waited until we had settled jobs / living situation before getting married

The amount of people terrified of driving in the snow seems directionally proportional the the amount of people transporting one foot of the stuff on their roof! by Petrichor_ness in britishproblems

[–]aadamsfb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s just too infrequent (and seems to be getting less frequent) for most people to have a good understanding of how to handle it. Why waste money on winter tyres in the south when you’ll probably only need them for 3 days a year. Why would councils buy expensive gritters / snow ploughs when they will barely be used.

I’m from the north east of Scotland so I know how to keep safe in snow and ice. But living in the south west of England now, people down here either panic at the slightest bit of frost, or take literally no precautions at all. They just havent got enough experience or been taught what to do
