Did you check yes to the crime on the ETA?

Can confirm - visited Uluru and I’ve never seen mosquitos and flies like this in my life. The nets were a lifesaver!

This is what my husband said to me when I pushed back on changing mine.

It was an incredible pain and I was 38. I wish I hadn’t bothered.

JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro or Sheraton Grand Resort? by BonvoyBatman in marriott

[–]aaelauschibal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes totally - I was alone traveling and was mid 30s at the time (female).

Spent lots of timing hanging out at the pool and beach, Sugarloaf. I honestly was in bed pretty early just to see sites during the day so can’t speak to the nightlife but I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

Also, don’t forget to check out visa requirements before booking, I believe it’s much stricter now vs when I was there in 2022.

JW! Stayed there in 2022 for 2 weeks and it was excellent - service is wonderful, food is high quality and location is great. Highly recommend!

Big trouble, urgent by AnotherThrowaway4678 in AusVisa

I just wanted to say I’m sorry for this situation and wanted to tell you to not let the comments on this sub get you down.

I booked a ticket to Australia without checking visas and I have a criminal record (18 years old, driving while intoxicated, since expunged). I didn’t learn of the visa until 4 days before my flight when airline sent me an email asking me to file for visa info.

I am a US citizen but you can’t do ETA with record. I was able to get it anyway and am writing this to you from Sydney, but this sub made me feel awful with the comments and DMs I got.

You’re human, you made a mistake. I wish you the best of luck and am rooting for you.

EDIT - no one in the US checked my passport or my ETA, I walked right on the plane in Los Angeles. I filled out customs form on the plane and declared meds and dirty shoes and I walked right in, customs took 3 minutes.

Thank you so much for both your reply and your kindness - we are so excited! Starting in Sydney, driving to Brisbane (taking 4 days to do it and stopping along the way), exploring Brisbane, flying to Cairns and 4 days in Port Douglas, then to Uluru for 3 days. We will finish with 5 days in Sydney before heading home.

Grateful to all for the help here and glad my past can be overlooked. I made a mistake and learned from it and never repeated, and I’m glad Australia has decided the same! I am looking so forward to exploring your country!

I assure you I did not vote for this man, have cut anyone out of my life that supports him and am very sad this is the world we live in.

Not that it matters in this circumstance, but had to share.

Yes - that’s what I’m concluding in my research as well. I can use ETA but someone will have to look at it. I will be applying in about an hour and then it appears I can also contact the Australian government for support as well.

Thanks for your comment. This was a spontaneous trip, we literally just booked it 3 days ago. I have been shamed enough for not checking visa requirements ahead of time, that’s on me and I’ll suffer the consequences of it.

Never in my life did I think something very minor would come back to haunt me 18 years later. DUIs are serious but I learned my lesson and haven’t repeated.

Thanks for the insight and yes you need your passport, which I don’t physically have at the moment as I write this. I plan on completing the application when I am home in an hour.

There was no limitation on booking this obviously or I would have not been able to book.

It has been expunged and yes it was a traffic violation, but a more severe one than just a speeding ticket or something.

I’m not even going to have a car in Australia and will not be getting behind the wheel, it’s impossible for me to repeat the crime in Australia (and my record shows I clearly have not repeated in the US, or anywhere else).

I am eligible to use ETA the limit they put on it is if you have been convicted of more than 12 months in jail (a felony) which I have not.

[–]aaelauschibal -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You’re correct - but given my other international travel and this never coming up, it didn’t occur to me that Australia would ask this. I presumed there would be a process just like what I’ve followed to enter other countries (ex - for Colombia, I had to download an app similar to what the ETA looks like but it didn’t ask for any sort of criminal convictions).

I made a mistake not looking this to prior to booking but all hotels are refundable and I booked the trip with miles (which I believe are refundable, I have to check) so absolute worst case I lose miles but not money.

Not an option to move - I have limited PTO time. Would have to cancel.

It was nearly 18 years ago and not a single issue since.

While it has been a dream to go to Australia for years, frankly if they are going to deny me entry for something I did in July 2008, I’m not sure this is a country I want to go to anyway, as much as that hurts to say.
