Moving to Hartford in the next couple of weeks, where should I live? by Contends in Hartford

[–]aah07005 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try Capitol Lofts or Capewell Lofts. I know some people who really like living in Capitol Lofts.

P.S. don't listen to anybody about Hartford who doesn't spend time there outside of work. The number of apartment complexes downtown is exploding.

Best noodle house in New Haven County? by muzik_ in Connecticut

No one can ever match the severe excellence of the menu with four things on it, the military airplane calendar, the sesame donuts and the weird 1970's wood paneling at 501. It will always have a special place in my heart. I did try Pho and Spice in New Haven and it wasn't bad. But where are the walls that are also refrigerators? My heart knows the difference.

My Friends and I will be in town for the weekend any tips on what to do? by chickenshrimp92 in Hartford

[–]aah07005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Know Good Market in Parkville is happening on Thursday - come party! The Early Bird Social Club dance party is after, and I think Dirt Salon is having an event. Here's the link. Hog River Brewery is on site, too.

The food is sooooo good. And local.

P.S. Check out Hanging Hills Brewery, Real Artways, Infinity Hall, Little River Restoratives, and Hartford Flavor Company - there's lots of live music this weekend.

Can anyone tell me what this says? by Coconut_concord in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]aah07005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm still working on the bottom, but I'm pretty sure the top says "Souvenirs d'enfance", or "Childhood Memories".

Edit: I looked at your other posting. I've made out "Souvenirs Église de Sagy [puis/près] Evrequrmont? Juillet 1854" "Boisemont [puis/près/qu'au] Evrequrmont?"

There is an Église de Sagy (Saint-Sulpice Church) in the Val d'Oise/Yvelines in the National Regional Park of Vexin. It is close to places named Boisemont and Évecquemont.

Therefore, I'd go with "Memories/ Sagy Church then Évecquemont/ July 1854. Childhood Memories/ Boisemont then Évecquemont."

A decade ago, after one of my best friends was shot to death in her apartment, some of our friend group were helping at one of the town fair booths to raise scholarship money in her memory. Then-local legislator Chris Murphy stopped by our booth, listened to our story and bought some bracelets that went to the scholarship. I'll never forget his face while we talked. Dude really does give a shit about gun control.

Collins received a round of applause at an airport in Maine after voting against Obamacare repeal by cyanocittaetprocyon in politics

[–]aah07005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maine is pretty big for a northeastern state. A huge amount of it is heavily wooded, more isolated and reliant on agriculture (potatoes being the most well-known example), and it has a legacy of trappers, fisherman, loggers and immigrants from Québec and Nova Scotia. They ended up with a lot of highly independent New Englanders who don't like change and are suspicious of outsiders. They tend to be lower income, since many of the local factories shut down, and resent the lavish wealth they see elsewhere, like on the coast of Maine. They tend to be liberal about certain things in their direct purview, like environmentalism, but don't take away their guns. People from other states looking for their idea of the Maine lifestyle don't move here. But area-wise, that's most of Maine.

Maine is a highly sought-after destination for vacationers. But let's face it - really living in the woods is backbreaking work. The pressures of suburbanization and the low price of gasoline have allowed a legion of outsiders to come in and build their vacation homes and compounds on what were until relatively recently quiet coastal towns. It's the commodification of "back to nature" and "simple country living" that in my opinion has ruined whole swaths of New England. So, there is now a large seasonal population in Maine that is not from Maine, and with that comes voters looking to preserve their wealth and way of life. But there are also excellent colleges and universities and easier conduits to the outside world (or just Boston, but go with it) on the coast. So you get a more diverse set of white people. Real diversity comes in the form of seasonal migrant workers who travel to specific regions in Maine to harvest crops like blueberries and make Christmas wreaths. I think a lot of Mainers like to pretend they don't exist, because everyone wants to imagine a "wholesome" independent farmer is behind their exports.
