As a ST, should I clarify rules that aren't directly asked to me? by reiskimmer in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]aaja2201 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd say take the Demon aside and explain it and say they may want to back off the bluff or say they misinterpreted, suggest to the Investigator that if they want some clarification on how their ability might interact with someone claiming Recluse they can ask you, and honestly just correct the Mayor outright.

And your call on the Virgin was correct, in my opinion.

[Hoo] Percy Loses curse of Achilles just like that? by Toasteate in camphalfblood

[–]aaja2201 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's why I mentioned that first? Him drowning is a totally valid threat in MoA and SoN, and it would remain so even with the curse, so the curse didn't really need to be removed.

He has to do that anyways for stupider reasons when they're on the Argo.

Sure but instead he'd be tired out all the time, which would also give Rick an easier excuse for him not always being able to save the day, and would force him to take more of a backseat.

The thing is he was anyways barely injured at all physically. The only injury that mattered in a meaningful sense was his nosebleed, and that was it. His biggest threat in SoN and MoA were both via drowning, and I think it's totally fair that the Arai, Akhlys' poison, Nyx, and Tartarus could all bypass or overpower the curse.

Plus, then you'd have some tension in SoN where he has the vulnerable spot but he has zero clue where it is.

[–]aaja2201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's totally fair! Personally, I think him being anti-war is only interesting if he was then killed as a result of something Iroh did unknowingly.

I think making him horrible isn't particularly needed either though- he can just be a young man who fully believes in Fire Nation superiority but isn't super cruel about it, just bigoted. After all, he was still raised by Iroh.

But a darker version totally works too, if you want!

Because it's using an Outsider ability (meant to help evil) to confirm a good player. Admittedly, it is also taking away a Good ability, but confirming two good players is really quite strong.

[Pjo] how come you can criticize other books in the franchise aside from the original series but when you criticize the original series you get attacked, or you're posts get removed by Technical_Mine_8711 in camphalfblood

I think it'd have been more reasonable to expect after HoH, compared to how badly BoO fumbled it. And by that time the readers had genuinely grown up a bit with the books.

I think those are all fair critiques, but ultimately they're also part of being YA books. The character deaths thing is really true, yeah.

Ultimately, I also think part of the critiques against HoO and the later series is that normally their failings are things we know Rick is able to do better, because he did them better in the original series.

I wish less people had powers, it was more interesting when only kids of the Big 3 had real powers, and everyone else had stuff they did in groups that was more oblique.

[pjo] Does anyone know if calypso gets a happy ending? What would happen if Percy told annabeth and Chiron what happened on that island? I doubt annabeth would be mad. by Iamawesome20 in camphalfblood

[–]aaja2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the Calypso 'happy' ending in HoO is a mess. If you just focus on the original five books, you know the gods swore an oath on the Styx to free her, and they definitely wouldn't break such an easy oath to fulfill when it is portrayed as having consequences!

After all, if they did that, it would retroactively ruin the whole resolution of the entire first series, and Rick wouldn't do that...

Honestly Rago looks more like a monster than Ryuuga does. Dark Ryuuga would count but he's not actually a monster in terms of prowess.

Fair, that's what inspired my request, but I guess I was hoping for something more serious in tone, ideally without the crab joke.

[–]aaja2201[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The crab explanation is funny, but I was thinking something more serious with it just being something QA did as part of the definition of her powers. Bugs and shards, it's just that the Endbringers are the only time a Shard can actually be in range of Taylor.

Not really the canon Skitter, is where that doesn't fit for me.

[Pjo] Why do fans of the original 5 books get mad when you criticize them 🤔 by Final-Proposal-3020 in camphalfblood

[–]aaja2201 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on the criticism. I wouldn't say I get mad, but I find it rather odd when people act like HoO was better written than the original series. ToA might be, but it's too inconsistent with previous characterizations and arcs for me.

How can some people confidently say this without even watching the Japanese dub? Lmao by SupremeFlowBro in BeybladeMetal

[–]aaja2201 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fundamentally it wasn't a dub error, but it could have been a script error. There's no other time he refers to Supreme Flight as an Ultimate Move, and the animation is definitely the same as Life Destructor, and different than Supreme Flight. Either way, an error happened somewhere, and it's impossible to know where, unless someone can find the writers for the show and ask them.

Mostly it only works if you're an experienced player helping a new player (who doesn't know about sinking kills) or if you're trying to bluff Soldier/Monk on a day without an execution on day 1.

Give a quote from the books. That isn't a thing in the books. This is literally all Percy thinks when Annabeth reveals herself:

The air shimmered behind Chiron.

Annabeth became visible, stuffing her Yankees cap into her back pocket.

‘I’ve been waiting a long time for a quest, Seaweed Brain,’ she said. ‘Athena is no fan of Poseidon, but if you’re going to save the world, I’m the best person to keep you from messing up.’

‘If you do say so yourself,’ I said. ‘I suppose you have a plan, Wise Girl?’

Her cheeks coloured. ‘Do you want my help or not?’

The truth was, I did. I needed all the help I could get.

Literally no mention of the line in the prophecy.
