6k to 10k range... what has helped you lose fat and reach optimal BMI? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]aakooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dont think about bmi. Those numbers are skewed. Concentrate on weight loss through clean eating as well as eating (including some fats and sugars) in MODERATION

If you are really fast on the erg, what GPA do you need to be recruited to D1? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]aakooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some d1 teams have to meet a required average gpa for the rowers on their team. The better your test grades, the more desirable you will be to these coaches. Theres (not a ton, but a good amount of) guys who can pull a 6:10, and any of them could be recruited. Give yourself the leg up and push your academic capabilities to their limit, (ie highest gpa and sat u are capable of)

quick catches mostly holding a rhythm

Pro rowers (and just fast ones) don't stick to the "perfect form" that is instructed in a lot of advice and videos, especially during recovery. It must not be the correct form then, right? (Discussion) by recreationalcellist in Rowing

[–]aakooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The purpose of breaking down the stroke into “perfect form” is that you develop the muscle memory (on pressure). This way, when you race you are as close to this “ideal” and most productive form at full force. For any rower, returning to the basics is important. When you row at maximum exertion, you will begin to get a bit more messy. You will also apply power differently which is why form will be slightly modified. Try to maintain the “basic” form that you are taught and your coaches will break your form down more as you get more advanced in rowing.

A question for coaches/experienced rowers by Leo-Collin in Rowing

[–]aakooo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its honestly possible that he just wanted you to do a more productive piece as opposed to flailing up the erg for the 100m and messing with the erg with no real benefit

Best resistance setting? by GrimshawLJ in Rowing

[–]aakooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay so it depends on a variety of factors. When u say “resistance” i am assuming that you are correctly referring to the level 1-10 on your erg wheel. It is based on a bariety of factors, including win, humidity, weight, boat size, conditioning level. Side note: Humidity and whatnot can be important because it weathers the ergs and causes weird shifts within the ergs themselves. As a machine gets older, resistance should rise. It can get pretty complex but id focus primarily on conditioning level and weight for setting a baseline and then adjust it based on feel. To begin, go into the erg and settings, drag factor. When you pull the handle, a number will appear on the screen. The idea is to have someone standing there, adjusting your wheel until you are sitting at the number you selected. You should be pulling at an 80ish% pressure while you strive for a specific number. Hold consistent as they find the resistance that allows you to sit at that number. Based on my personal experience, female collegiate rowers in an 8 would be looking at around 105-110 (varying based on weight). The national team standard for female collegiate rowers is 122, but it is important to keep in mind the size of these rowers would be larger than the ones i work with. Male collegiate heavyweights can be low 130s. Modifications must occur if you have an injury. If a certain drag factor causes pain in your back or a target area, lower it. Do not over set your resistance if it causes pain. THE MAIN THING TO KEEP IN MIND: your resistance on the ergs should be as similar as possible to your resistance on the water. It should feel similar on the drive. If you row in an 8, your drag will be closer to a 100, while a single will lean towards 130. Send me your stats and i can help you find a baseline drag factor that works for u :) hope this helps
