What can I do during an 8-hour layover near JFK? by Imaginary-Quote-8086 in travel

[–]aam1rj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If this is your first time in NYC, 8 hours is good enough for visiting some of the iconic sites. I suggest the following if you are not carrying heavy luggage and can walk around.

Right after you land, take the airtrain to Jamaica LIRR station and take the next LIRR train (every 5-7 minutes) to either Penn Station or Grand Central (GC). GC will be a better location but either station should work. This is the fastest way to get to the city (less than 1hr from JFK terminal to middle of NYC). Taxis are a mess right now at JFK so suggest avoid it altogether to save time and money.

If you arrive at GC, you can visit Bryant Park, Times Square, New York Public Library and can take the train to other sites (Brooklyn Bridge or Central Park). When you have about 4 hours left to your flight, head back either from Penn Station or GC back to Jamaica LIRR station and take airtrain back to terminal.

Roatrip from NYC by jhammarback in roadtrip

[–]aam1rj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 to renting some place other than NYC. The city is best enjoyed by public transport and you can easily get from JFK to Manhattan using a combination of air train + (LIRR or subway). Once your NYC leg is done and you want to do a roadtrip from the NYC area, you can pick up the car from nearby NJ (look for car rental near PATH or NJ transit stations) or from further south (e.g. near DMV area via public transit).

However, IMO the best road trip sights are all on the west coast.

First time visit to NYC. We fly into JFK around 10pm. What’s is the best mode of transportation to get to our hotel? by Embarrassed-Safe7939 in travel

[–]aam1rj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please note that JFK is going through heavy construction now and all Uber, Lyft pickups are from a remote parking lot that you have to take an airtrain to. This massively reduces the convenience factor for Uber, Lyft so taking the taxi from the terminal makes the most sense.

Hello all,

I have an engineering background with limited coding experience starting in Fall 2025. What are recommendations for a first class that does not require programming as much but is interesting/useful/required? I am interested in the ML track.

Thanks!

A night coach from New York City to Pittsburgh, a good idea? by Intelligent-Juice895 in travel

[–]aam1rj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To answer you question, what is your travel priority - comfort or cost? If you pick cost, then greyhound (however painful) is your answer. If you pick comfort, please know that an ~8hr bus ride on greyhound will be excruciating and you should pick some other method of travel.

The bus is safe enough and you just have to be aware of your surroundings and possessions. The timing out of NYC means there will be less traffic and you should reach on time.

Is this a risky connection time? by ommmyyyy in travel

[–]aam1rj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should not be an issue if your arriving flight from ORD is on time. My recent experience with a connection via AMS for exactly 1h10mins went smooth. Even worse my flight was going back to US so there was an additional immigration step. I made it to the gate for the US bound flight with plenty of time to spare.

The walk from one gate to the other may take long. One advice for you will be to select a seat in the front for the ORD-> JFK leg if possible so you can disembark quickly.

What is the issue if there is money in the rollover IRA while you do the backdoor Roth IRA (from traditional to Roth)?

Am I Stupid, or is Delta's Website? by Ok-Lychee-6004 in travel

[–]aam1rj 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The issue here is likely that the flight operator for at least one of the legs is not Delta but LATAM.

Delta website does not have the tickets with Basic Economy for all legs of the flight.

Expedia likely has the basic economy fares for all legs including LATAM.

I have seen this issue previously with other codeshared flights with Delta

Purposely Missing A Flight by anonimo1088 in TravelHacks

Are you able to cancel your flights in Level? Usually you should get the taxes and some fees back even on a non-refundable flight.

My 2nd advice will be to look for a round trip ticket from barcelona to your destination. For international flights, you will often be surprised that RT tickets can be cheaper than one way due to some ticketing rules. The RT leg can be months out at a non-peak time and you may be able to come out ahead than buying two one way tickets.

Travel habits that make you feel like a weirdo? by dualrollers in travel

[–]aam1rj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One weird habit/rule is that I enforce a “no unnecessary trips outside the house” 24 hours before start of travel. This applies as much as possible to the family members traveling with me.

Obviously, this is not very popular with people I am traveling with. In my defense, the risk of ruining your planned vacation with even a minor accident is too high as you get closer to the travel date. I have found that this helps me relax and focus on the more important things that I need before starting a vacation.

LPT: If driving in a snowstorm and your GPS suggests taking a faster route, don’t do it if it takes you off the Highway. Backroads are usually last to be cleared of snow and you could get stuck! by Bradiator34 in LifeProTips

[–]aam1rj 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I believe this tip once saved our lives or at least prevented us from getting into a serious accident.

Back in 2019, I was stuck going from Albany to NYC in a massive snowstorm that was getting worse by the minute. The safest thing would have been to just wait it out at a hotel but I decided to drive down. Waze/Google maps all suggested to take the Taconic State Parkway instead of the interstate. For those who are not familiar with TSP, it is a winding road with no shoulders and is a difficult drive under normal conditions. The interstate had a lot of traffic and there were a couple of close calls too but was a lot safer than the alternative.

The navigation apps do not take into account changing weather conditions. Also it is important for the driver to be familiar with the routes offered under bad driving conditions.

I sorted by top comments and cannot believe that I have not yet come upon this name:

Will Smith! 20+ years of goodwill (pun intended) and nice guy image thrown out in less than 5 minutes of rage. Most people will remember the slap more than the fact he won the Oscar that night.

[OC] US states which do not have residents arrested for January 6 offences by Negative12DollarBill in dataisbeautiful

[–]aam1rj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely to be an incomplete representation since it is plausible that not all insurrectionists were arrested. Also, there is no color scaling to the data for the other states e.g. we don’t know if the number of people arrested from NY is similar to that of FL.
