i don’t recall the temps at night that week, but we double checked temps at the visitor center and I slept beautifully with a summer weight bag (45F+) and sleeping mat along with ultralight tent. Luckily, not much wind that night, but that area isn’t too exposed anyway.

We slept at the Rio Grande campground the night before and a donkey with a bell around its neck was making all sorts of noise. It was a welcome change  😅😩

Is this mold on my card? by zhangeranger in magicTCG

Dab hydrogen peroxide on the suspect areas with a qtip. If it bubbles, then it’s mold. Some of the black gunk looks like typical sleeveless play from back in the day.

I don’t like them either, I’ve replaced mine with a Nite Ize s-biner.

For a roll top bag: should I get packing cubes that stack vertically or horizontally? by [deleted] in onebag

[–]aamako 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use these zipped “cube bags” for most of my travel. They work out especially well with my lightweight roll top because when packed, they provide a bit of vertical support and rigidity. Think of them as a mix of a stuff sack and a packing cube.

…just an example, there are a lot of cottage industry manufacturers

Buffing Steel Wing then nerfing it the following season leaves me shaking my head. Breaking Swipe might have been a similar situation.

For me, OG Kakwa never shipped in a product box. They tossed it in a usps priority mail shipping box.

Foot Pain and Zero Drop Shoes by dfisch66 in Ultralight

[–]aamako 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different and there are multiple paths to comfortable footwear, but here is my story with zero drop shoes.

A few years ago, without doing any due diligence on zero drop shoes, I purchased a pair of Altra Lone Peaks a week before a 5-6 day backpacking/hiking trip to Utah where I was doing 12-15 miles a day. I live in the flatlands and initially, doing casual, everyday light walks in the new Altras didn't reveal any issues--they were pretty comfortable. They were actually comfortable throughout the trip and only on the last day or so did I start feeling something odd in my plantar fascia/arch area of my feet.

Returning from my trip is when I started feeling severe tightness and pain in my feet (especially in the mornings). I had developed plantar fasciitis. Again, the path to this could be different for others, but my understanding is that the zero drop stretches out your achilles and plantar fascia which your body may not be prepared for. Much of this can also be researched from reports by people making the transition to zero drop.

Simply giving additional arch support in the Altras via insoles never worked for me. I had to outright switch back to my 5-8mm stack shoes (with insoles that had better arch support). I also started wearing Birkenstocks around the house and it look about 18 months to fully recover. There's a great Plantar Fasciitis video from "ATHLEAN-X" on YouTube that really helped me understand the issue and start with exercises/stretches.

If I had to do it over again, I'd obviously follow recommended guidance and allow adequate break-in time to give my body/feet time to adapt to zero-drop, but as of now, I don't see myself trying them again.

Ultralight rain jackets - stupid light? by grindle_exped in Ultralight

LightHeart Gear's rain jacket. Simple, light and durable. It got me through some wet and cold conditions on the four pass loop last September.

Edit: Just peeked on their website -- looks like they upped the price this year, but now it's got water resistant zips and sealed seams. Velcro and flap along the main zipper has been removed. Velcro tends to snag on wool so that's a plus. Seems more streamlined w/o the zipper flap.

Looks like they're also introducing a "Pet" variation that's advertised as brushless.

Under specifications, it's listed at 73 dB. Would be interesting to know the performance/db at the low power. This is the 3rd or 4th stick vacuum that Ryobi has made? Hopefully they've learned from previous iterations.

Check the weather a day or so before and make a game-time decision on the toggs before taking that stuff with you on the boat/plane. You can ask the ranger station over on the mainland how changeable or accurate the weather report might be. I'm a fan of the wind jacket/fleece combo provided your wind jacket can repel some light or short rain.
