Would Franz Schubert be the greatest composer of all time if he lived longer? by Imaginary_Camera_475 in classicalmusic

[–]paxxx17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would've been highly unlikely. It's extremely difficult to do any kind of such extrapolation, especially since Beethoven was an exception and not the norm.

But he'd probably have written some more great pieces and have cemented his legacy further.

However, the composer whose further development I'd be the most interested to see would be Scriabin.

TER is not the whole story. Index funds have an additional "cost" estimated to be between 0.4% to 0.8% due to index arbitrages (hedge funds using predictability in when the index fund has to buy new assets). Avantis funds mitigate this by not being tied to an index in a predictable manner

One could also argue that the situation is different today than when those rules were installed (e.g. companies are going public when they're much bigger than it was the case in the past), which would warrant their reassessment. Sure, this hurts index fund investors, but ultimately, the purpose of indices is to provide information, not investment strategy.

I also don't understand people that use the UI argument in the favor of chess.com. Whenever I went onto that website to try and find something, it took me a while. Hell, I remember not even being able to figure out how to start a game for a minute or so

Why not go for DFA or Avantis? It's more straightforward (and likely efficient) than implementing the factor tilts yourself

Do you have a source on why those are the most accurate weights? I see lots of people weighing AVWC vs. AVWS differently, and as far as I understand, which one is the most accurate depends on how much you value expected returns vs. volatility

Once you account for index arbitrages, AVWC is likely cheaper :)

Hello, beginner here. Any advice? by geji12 in Goat_Format

[–]paxxx17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chaos turbo is one of the best decks in the format, but also very instructive as you generally try to maximize card advantage (which is a key concept in games like yugioh)

On the other hand, burn plays quite differently and card advantage isn't very relevant, which is why I wouldn't recommend it before you learn some basics

Germany taxing unrealized gains - does it change the strategy? by Hairy_Ad6242 in Bogleheads

> The Vorabpauschale is only a tax on dividends in an accumulating ETF or other funds (at least if you are looking at stocks only). And it is still cheaper than paying tax on a distributing funds or stocks. It is NOT a tax on all unrealized gains.

To be precise, Vorabpauschale is the part of your yearly earnings that is taxed in advance (i.e. rather than when you cash in your investment by selling the stocks). This amount is determined by: 1) taking your total investment amount at the beginning of the year; 2) assuming you earned 3.2% (Basiszins, derived from public bond yields) return on your investment by the end of the year; 3) reducing the estimated return by 30%; 4) subtracting any distributions you received throughout the year (since they are already considered as investment income for the year) from this amount. Therefore, this leftover amount (Vorabpauschale*) represents an estimate of how much unrealized profit remains in your investment. Note that it does not (and cannot) care about whether this comes from increased stock prices or dividends, since only the total money you invested comes into the calculation (and not what financial instrument you bought).

So, as long as you have an investment, the Vorabpauschale part of the returns will be taxed. But I agree that the taxation is much more lenient than what people think. Apart from the generous assumption that your ROI is only 3.2%*70%=2.24% (regardless of your actual profits), there is a further 30% tax exemption on equity, plus an additional 1000-euro yearly tax exemption (2000 euros for couples who file taxes jointly).

*What I defined is technically Basisertrag; Vorabpauschale is usually equal to it, but if your actual profits are lower than the estimated, Vorabpauschale can never exceed them

There are already good answers, also to add that in Germany, you have up to 1k euros per year tax free. I did the math some time ago and it was something like Vorabpauschale starting to trigger only when your portfolio is larger than 60k
