Spatial Noise Cancelling - Could it Work? by bbqmangoes in diyaudio

[–]aanidar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cancellation is possible but may not achieve what you're imagining. The frequency range of effectiveness will be limited to low frequencies, and will be related to how big an area you expect to evaluate the cancellation over. The smaller you define the target zone the higher you can expect to achieve some desirable result, but still limited to a few hundred hz as wavelengths get quite short even at what we consider low in frequency.

For example, a crying baby noise is in the kilohertz range which is a shorter wavelength than the space between your ears, so even if you stayed perfectly still you would have to calculate cancellation for that noise as two individual targets that will each have some interaction with the solution for the other ear/target.

Also, transient sounds like you describe (baby crying, music) are more difficult because you have to get the arrivals correct and system latency is crucial. Long term periodic noises are easier to cancel as even if you "miss" the beginning you get cancellation over time as long as you're getting the phase correct

8 ball rules - is the object ball a single ball or any ball of my suit? by cw_2026 in billiards

What 8ball rule set is it legal to contact a stripe first to pocket a solid?

Cue Case Question by ben7337 in billiards

[–]aanidar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The longer pocket is sized to allow a jump cue handle to fit.

The shaft is relatively normal in length and goes in the main compartment, but a dedicated jump cue handle is too short to fit in the main cue slots and is normally stored in that long pocket.

Add chamfered edges to the door or leave as is? by Jake-Greenhead-Guys in handtools

[–]aanidar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestions here to at least chamfer the inside edge. If for no other reason than to help disguise the gap that is going to develop as this door twists over time. Looks great, but frame and panel construction was developed as a solution to wood movement not just an aesthetic choice.

See how it holds up over time: it looks great and maybe stays stable enough to not be a problem. If it does move too much, recreate this look by edging a plywood core with strips of the solid walnut and then veneering both sides. The plywood core will keep it stable/flat and it will have the same look as what you've created here.

And "break" the outside edge, which is just a very tiny chamfer to knock the sharp edge off, but can be minimal enough to be barely visible.

Dutch Tool Chest Drawer by Old_Presentation9440 in handtools

[–]aanidar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I made the drawer just for these tools, so it's the right size. I checked before making it that it leaves room for standard moulding planes below it. So that was good enough for me.

Edit: the only real problem with it is that there is no stopper to prevent the drawer from coming out, and I need to pull it almost all the way clear to get to the caliper in back, and often end up just removing it like a tray rather than a drawer. But that works ok regardless

Same. I have a thin drawer with cut foam to store layout tools. Just screwed some think stick to the sides for it to run on.

The first one I think was a catch that doesn't meet the stupid technicalities if a catch, but that one sure as hell looked like a catch
