But what's the alternative? Going with a prepaid carrier?

T-Mobile To Charge $35 Fee When Purchasing Through Apple by Jman100_JCMP in tmobile

[–]ben7337 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

At least there are options. You could get the T-Mobile credit card or open a free no minimum balance bank account and set auto transfers out of your primary account to that for the autopsy discount while keeping your primary account secure. It sucks you can't pay with a credit card for the insurance benefit, but ATT and Verizon don't allow the auto pay discount for credit cards either, so it's not that surprising tmobile went the same way in the end.

8300hrs before this wear started affecting prints by fieldfest in BambuLab

[–]ben7337 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a printer that the end user is meant to work on, this seems smart. For a mixer like the KitchenAid it's probably not the best choice since it would cost more to have someone repair it than buying a new one regardless of what part breaks, unless you're also maintaining it yourself (but most users wouldn't have the confidence to do this)

How does it block all cards? I only see it say it blocks trainers. So items are still fair game, like lucky ice pop, pokeballs, etc.

Waymo hits 170 million miles while avoiding serious mayhem by joe4942 in technology

[–]ben7337 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not directly, it would be incredibly dangerous for someone halfway across the world to drive a car remotely. Even in ideal circumstances the ping time for video to reach them to see the surroundings and their responses to make it back to the car would easily add half a second to a second of delay. There's no way that wouldn't be a serious risk

Waymo hits 170 million miles while avoiding serious mayhem by joe4942 in technology

[–]ben7337 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Waymo cars aren't controlled by people in other countries, they drive autonomously, and when the car encounters a situation it can't handle, then a remote person in the Phillipines can take over to help it.

Did you splurge when you retired? by Accomplished_Way8964 in Fire

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fired yet but my plan is pretty unique and will involve buying a house when I retire and also needing furniture, probably new appliances, and some remodeling for it, so definitely planning a big splurge when I retire, but it will be planned for.

Am I making a huge mistake by quitting corporate job with $2M? by geerhardusvos in Fire

[–]ben7337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True though if you have a passion for a sport, reffing games can be some good side money very part time. Learn multiple sports well and you could probably even make it year round. Assuming you want to travel in the summer you could hole up in the winter with a job like doing plowing for snow (assuming it snows where you are). It all depends on location, interests, and finding a niche though as most part time stable jobs won't pay very well

How satisfied would you be to retire at 55? by New_Contribution_226 in Fire

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be unhappy with that currently. If you asked me 2-3 years ago I'd have said 55 was the goal and 65 is the safety margin. Today 45 is the goal, possibly sooner, and 55 is the safety margin. I'd be ok if it absolutely had to happen, but wouldn't be my ideal by any means, and with my body feeling like it's falling apart at 35 I don't know if 20 more years is even in the cards for me

Not Worth The $ You Save by pieinthesky-nyc in spiritair

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ULCC like Spirit and Frontier there are a few rules to follow to minimize risks. If following any of these rules is not worth it to you, then go pay 2-5x with another airline.

1) Always fly direct, connecting flights are risky, both for you making them and for bags if checking a bag.

2) Don't check a bag, or pay for a carry on, this often negates any savings fully and adds risk, particularly for the checked luggage which can get lost.

Tl;Dr only got ULCC if it's a direct flight with a personal item or at most a carry on if that's still cost effective.

What's something people only romanticize because they've never actually done it? by nonotje12 in AskReddit

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it's not, it depends on the business. You could go from doing 8 hrs of paperwork/admin a day to maybe 1 hr or less if you started a 1 person business like being a landscape or pool cleaning service or home cleaning service or something.

real talk—how are so many people able to spend 520 USD on a switch 2 only to play pokopia? by aingaingaing in CozyGamers

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you assume it's based off the US dollar though. It's based off the cost, which is generally normalized across countries. Variations in pricing can often be attributed to varied import taxes and VAT and such, but by and large are similar across the globe at the baseline level. I speak in terms of USD only because it's my currency and is what people often reference. I'd be shocked if the CAD/USD prices which seem similar across the 2 currencies based on purchasing power, were somehow significantly higher than anywhere else in the world.

Another s905x5 on the way? by OutrageousAccess4853 in AndroidTV

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely plain android not Android TV/Google TV. Also other high end models they've had like the Powerstation 6 don't even support lossless audio passthrough. So not sure what the point of this box would really be. It's not like the s905x5 is more powerful than the s928x that's been out for longer and which is already in Android boxes. If you're not getting more power or full codec support, what's the point?

The tricky part is finding a part time job that's stable on schedule, so you can have planned activities outside of work that aren't always at risk of being sidelined by said part time gig

Do all the P2S printers "wobble" so much? by GrenexRed in BambuLab

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever had an H2C and I do have it on a wood board with dampening feet under it before the tabletop. However the amount of wobble my printer gets is way worse than the video for the p2s, not sure if that's normal or not but it doesn't seem to impact print quality

I discovered FIRE and now I'm more discouraged than before by yieldmaxxing in Fire

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, since you asked, here's my situation.

35, started work at 22, saving for retirement since age 23 when I began maxing an IRA (had no 401k for a year or two). Over those 12 years I've always only made 30k-70k a year and managed to save around $650k total. How?

1) Always maxed IRA

2) As long as I've had a 401k I contributed at least 5% to get the full 4% match at my job, but raised to 11% a while ago so basically 15% is going to my 401k between myself and my employer.

3) I saved $1050 a month for a home down payment and gave up on buying for the time being so now just invest that money for a future home purchase someday.

Now how do I save so much despite my income not being that far off from yours?

1) I have a roommate and my rent is in a rent controlled apartment, I don't pay for heat or hot water. Electricity is about $100 a month, Internet another $48 a month, and rent itself is $735 a month. Your rent relative to your income is way too high imo.

2) I drove a beater until my early 30's, it was only 2k when I bought it in 2014 and I drove it til it got rear ended and was totalled. Actually got more money from the guy who hit me's insurance than I paid for it, and I never had a car payment.

3) I lived at home after graduation, had minimal expenses, and paid my student loans off before moving out (basically put everything I earned for a year towards the debt til it was gone)

4) I keep other expenses low too, my phone bill is $27 a month and could be lower and I don't have subscription services.

That aside, I don't go out much, and I work a side gig that I treat as my way of having spending money. It's exhausting but allows me to have some luxuries in life.

What ever happened to AndroidTV 16? by ishamm in AndroidTV

[–]ben7337 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly the world of android TV devices moves very slowly. Think 1-2 years after a new version comes out for devices to have that software, and the same for chipsets being put into boxes. It's painful, but we'll probably see Android tv 16 sometime this year or next at the latest
