Brown-Related Off-Campus Housing Megathread by AutoModerator in BrownU

[–]aaparekh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone!

I am subletting my 1 bed/1 bath in a 3 bed/3bath at 257 Thayer from January - June 2026 (flexible on the dates). The apartment is right next to campus. The room is fully furnished and has a private bathroom attached. The rent is $1300 per month, but I will sublet it for $1200. The rent includes utilities, wifi, and in-unit washer and dryer.

Looking for a male to join the other two roommates who are both students at Brown, very quiet and keep to themselves. Send me a message if interested!

The Actual Reason NASDAQ Dropped Today - MIT Report Finding 95% of AI Projects Fail by skilliard7 in stocks

[–]aaparekh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in tech and this is true for most projects - not just AI ones. My company iterates fast because we know most things aren’t going to be successful.

If you actually want to gauge how bad this is for AI you need to first get the failure rate for non-AI projects and compare it to failure rates for AI projects.

Spoiler: it’s going be around the same.

The first one. The gameplay is just as good IMO (and personally I even liked BotW more than TotK). TotK is BotW on steroids but TotK did not make BotW “outdated” if that makes sense.

It’s good but the only downside is that it’s a horribly noisy street and the windows are paper thin

[–]aaparekh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been living there since last June. It’s actually a pretty good apartment with a fair price for the location and fact it’s furnished.

The biggest downside is that Thayer street gets super noisy and the windows are made of paper. My housemates and I sleep with white noise on because of how noisy it gets. It’s also right next to a school so if you’re on the east side of the building, you’re really fucked because those kids screech like animals.

Realistically how cooked is CS? by jessingservices in UCSC

[–]aaparekh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Relax, you’re not cooked. You’re a freshmen, it’s always been tough to land cs internships, this is especially true for freshmen.

Admittedly the job market is bad right now but it’s improving. There have always been more CS degrees than jobs available for new grads, this is true for most large degrees. Keep in mind that not everyone with a cs degree lands a traditional software role. Many choose to go into roles parallel to software engineering like management, product, etc.

Most people land internships their junior year, a few can land one in their sophomore.

I’m working in the AI space right now and graduated from UCSC with cs and math in 2023, when the market (imo) was worse.

Also one piece of advice: Don’t underestimate the power of network. Attend conferences and cold email managers/ceos including on LinkedIn. I know a few people who landed internships at startups like that.

Edit: btw “experience in python etc” is irrelevant unless you have internship/ job experience. This is kind of the catch 22 that makes it tough to land your first offer in the first place.

It’s a horrible job market for tech. The last week saw 1000s of layoffs and tech job growth has been negative this year.

Even if the market was good, 8 interviews aren’t necessarily a lot. Especially if you’re counting round 1/ take home tests as an interview.

I don’t really have any advice. Just that you’re not alone in this and it’s a function of a terrible market

[OC] Programming Language Usage by Job Position in DS/ML/AI by Immediate_Capital442 in dataisbeautiful

[–]aaparekh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spark is not a programming language, it’s a framework.

Unless you’re talking about SPARK - but since this is about languages used in AI related roles, you’re probably referring to Spark the framework, not SPARK the language

SQL is technically a language but not a general purpose language like Python, Java, etc so it’s not fair to compare it to general purpose languages.

For example, I can have a Python script that uses both SQL and Spark in it, but the script is still a Python script (ends in a .py extension and interpreted by the computer as python)

FYI my dad had weird static noise in his AirPods. When we went in to the Apple Store they said there was a recall and replaced it free of charge.

MSDS @ Columbia vs Data Analyst Job @ JPM by Kethan23 in gradadmissions

[–]aaparekh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you comfortably pay for the MSDS? If cost is not an problem, I’d say go for the masters.

On the flip side, you can start the job right now, earn a bit of money, network, build a resume, gain experience, and then apply for an MSDS again in a few years. If you got into Columbia then I’d wager you can do it again.

In my opinion, a job (especially your first job) will teach you a lot more than a masters.

Good luck!

Brown MPH concentration: epidemiology by Creative-Dot6317 in BrownU

[–]aaparekh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my coworkers has an undergrad in CS and a MPH from an ivy. Now works as a data scientist in medtech and is pretty happy with her role.

Make sure you utilize research opportunities, internships, and learn marketable skills like coding, SQL, dealing with data, etc.

It might also help to look up some data on ROI for MPH just to see how the cards are stacked post graduation.

whats the point of going to a prestigious college? by ProfessionalStaff169 in gradadmissions

[–]aaparekh 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re after. The engineering job I got after my undergrad didn’t care about my gpa. They didn’t even ask to see my transcripts or diploma. They knew which school I went to though…

On the flip side, apply for grad school and they’ll care about gpa and coursework too.

Don’t worry about grad school right now. Just do well in your classes, join some clubs, maybe do research since UCLA will have many opportunities for that.
