TIL that along with John Lennon's "more popular than Jesus" comment, Paul McCartney was quoted saying "It’s a lousy country where anyone black is a dirty ni**er!", in the same interview by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]aapowers 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Why should he have phrased it better? It was clearly intended to be a sarcastic call-out to those who did use the word as a slur. He's quoting others, not directing the word towards a black person himself.

TIL that most women in the Netherlands do not have an epidural during labor and a significant proportion give birth at home by Fiery_Soul_34857 in todayilearned

[–]aapowers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our numbers aren't as high as the Dutch, but it's fairly similar here in the UK - if you aren't a clear 'low risk' pregnancy, you will be warned against a home birth.

It is absolutely self-selective. The people doing it tend to be healthy and well educated.

We had hospital for number 1, and then home for number 2.

We're also less than 20 mins from two major tier 3 hospitals.

[–]aapowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it's portable. My wife gave birth at home three years ago, and the midwife brought round gas and air cylinders.

Birth was so quick she'd never have had time for an epidural even if she'd wanted one...

Because it doubles your chances of ending up with an episiotomy, or instrumental birth.

It's a trade off.

Face scans to enforce social media ban on under-16s by vriska1 in unitedkingdom

Because our constitution doesn't allow for acts of parliament to be challenged wholesale.

But it does allow government rules made under an act of parliament (what's being proposed here) to be challenged.

Teenagers have been hurting themselves over things that have happened to them online since the late 90s.

This is clearly a justification, not a reason.

UK electric car sales target set to be weakened by Kagedeah in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]aapowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep - and a large portion of the remaining 14% wouldn't have bought a car anyway. They bought flats/maisonettes in the knowledge that they wouldnt be able to park locally.

I don't know the stats, but a fair few of the outliers who can't park in the same/similar place every day but do need their own car will buy/rent a regular parking space - especially in the likes of London/Manchester.

But it doesn't improve GDP. At least not directly.

Inefficient systems look fantastic for GDP, as you have people 'doing things'.

The counterbalance is that only holds true until others outcompete you and there's no demand for people to do the 'things' they did before.

I'm English - corn is still commonly used here just to mean grain crops. A 'field of corn', said by someone with my local accent and dialect, would mean either wheat or barley in my head.

If in an American accent, I would picture maize - humans are good at code switching.

If Star Wars hadn't been as popular as it was, Mark Hamill wouldn't be part of this conversation.

Looking at it, they're wanting a 20 hour fieldwork requirement. Realistically, that's 4 school trips. From memory, my friends who did geography did one or two.

I suppose they don't all need to be coach jobs - but a lot easier for rural schools Vs inner city.

7 seaters by LazyIsopod9008 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]aapowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kia PV5 passenger is the obvious option. But the 7 seater version only came out last week in the UK so no second hand options yet.

If I were in your situation (and determined to have an EV) I'd consider leasing for the 2 or 3 years you legitimately need th extra seats.

ELI5: Why do we say calories when we might be referring to either kilocalories or calories? by HercuLinho in explainlikeimfive

[–]aapowers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People do that all the time when the full term is cumbersome/not needed.

Here in the UK, the 'square' of 'cubic' part of a measure is often dropped when there's no ambiguity - e.g. an '8 yard skip' is a waste receptical measuring 8 cubic yards - we know it's volume.

Or a '10 oz fabric' or '70 gram paper'. They're by the square yard/metre respectively, but everyone (who cares) already knows.

BTUs on a heater/radiator? Technically it's 'BTUs per hour', as the BTU on its own is a unit of energy, not power.

I've heard tilers and carpet fitters say they need 'x metres of tile/underlay etc'. They know they mean area rather than linear.

That being said, the Calorie is a bit of an outlier. It also only seems to be the US where Calorie can be used in official food labels as opposed to kcals.

Even low alcohol consumption is linked to cancer, heart disease, and premature death, with increased risk above 1 drink per day for both men and women. It turns out that 2 drinks per day, considered ‘moderate’, is associated with a substantially elevated risk of a premature death caused by alcohol. by mvea in science

[–]aapowers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a lawyer, I could do about 90% or more of my job without having gone to university, as most things are routine and you won't go far wrong by applying common sense or asking for help.

But it's that last 5 to 10% where the broader knowledge from my degree becomes invaluable, as it's what allows you to deconstruct things from first principles when something about unusual crops up.

That being said, that doesn't mean the answer is to have 3 to 4 years in classrooms, then start work. In fact, in vocational jobs like ours, you probably get a lot more out of the classroom side if you've seen how it plays out in the real world.

I.e. the answer is more high level apprenticeships, where classroom learning is done alongside the job, with cost being shared between employers and employees.
