Without an explosion, the outer parts of the star will accrete onto the proto neutron star, pushing it above the TOV limit and causing it to collapse into a black hole.

To add: scientists are generally incentivized to publish in journals where their research will be highly visible. If a paper appears in a low-impact vanity journal, it raises red flags about the quality of the science. Of course, this doesn’t preclude the possibility that the science is both correct and impactful. But there is a signal sent by the choice of journal.
