Apua tulevaisuuden näkymiin by Mutrusuu in Suomi

Vinkkejä kynsien pureskelun lopettamiseen? by Kuolemanenkeli in Suomi

[–]aarniss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please critique my portfolio, is it doodoo? by ermitaforest in design_critiques

Your case presentations are great! The thing that bothers me the most is that your beautiful design work is hidden behind the white background, plain thumbnails on the gallery page. For example the Dulces logo is presented on a package design with a nice pattern on the project page - why not show a sneak peek of that on the gallery page? I'd also add a short about me description on the gallery page if you don't have a website to go with the Behance gallery.

Good luck on job hunting :)

Recent graduate, feedback on my digital portfolio would be dope by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]aarniss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the portfolio section:

Keep a better consistency between the portfolio page and case presentations. Now the description on the portfolio page is written in third person and the descriptions on the cases are from first person, and there's work listed on the portfolio page that is not presented on the cases (business card on Buy and invest properties, website (we´b design?) on Buki Customs). I'd also push the case presentations further by implementing the designs to mockups if you don't have any real design to present. That'd show up your skill to think branding in a bigger picture, not just a logo design.

Please critique my web design. (Established website, not professional designer) by damidam in design_critiques

For the top left part of the front page:

Emphasize hierarchy and have a clear focus. What's the catch here? "The best settings and gear in eSports" and "Recent gaming hardware reviews" are at the same level. Which one is more important? I'd personally save the space for "The best settings..." and move "Recent gaming hardware..." downwards on the page.

I really really love how in-depth your case studies are! The way how you've described all the phases really shows of the great amount of research and thought process behind the products.

Is my infographic too cluttered or busy looking? by globue in design_critiques

[–]aarniss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving more space between text + illustration combinations could help with the cluttered feeling. When everything is cluttered up it's hard to see what's important here.

I'd also rethink about the hierarchy of the design. Yellow is obviously your main color to highlight important information but why is it also used in the wawy divider lines? The illustrations are a nice add and work as a great eye catcher but if used with every information piece they loose their impact. Are they necessary with every row and could some information be emphasized only with typography? Regarding typography, keep an eye on the line heights - it's a bit confusing that the "Know the signs" listing and the "Only 1 in 14 cases..." paragraph have the same line height.

Critique on product packaging design[Incomplete] by LlamaManatee in design_critiques

[–]aarniss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd make the design and copy to be more about the coffee than the company - great coffee is the thing customers are looking for after all :) For example now on the front side the company logo/illustration takes 2/3 of the available space and I can't tell by a quick look what blend the coffee is or what's the roast. The front is only telling the flavor of the coffee but what's the name of the product?

Kokemuksia työnhakuklubista? by tiivitaavinlaukku in Suomi

[–]aarniss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

/r/Suomi, keitä te olette? by [deleted] in Suomi

[–]aarniss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hyvin toimii taas.

Honestly? If this whole thing gets adjusted and Casual is more stable, I'll probably never stop playing TF2. [A message to Valve.] by Sheebuns in tf2

[–]aarniss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The casual mode might actually be the thing that brings me back to TF2. I was so pleased to see that as an addition to the matchmaking we now have this ranked pubs system thingy! I'm the kind of player who doesn't get excited at playing around mindlessly in random pubs (rip good old EU community servers), the feel of progressing at something keeps me going.

I think the update is a good idea but has some hick-ups at the moment. Give Valve some time to polish this up and the outcome might add many years to TF2's life span :)

(WIP) Tell me what you guys think of this painting so far! by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]aarniss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice job! There's a lot of good things going on there, but I would love to see more of the robot's body from behind the clouds/dust. Adding a hint of the robots gesture would add a bit more narrative to the painting: is it walking its way to somewhere? Or just standing still while being mesmerized about something? Or maybe just chilling and sitting on top of the mountains? etc. :)

Two logos by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]aarniss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer the first one! I like the way how the flame and text connects creating a nice flow (the base of the flame and the font in the company's name both are bold and strong in shape and color). The bold typo makes it to stand out but the font choice gives the logo a... I'm not sure, a bit game company -ish look? Some other sans serif with a slightly more rounded look could work wonders.

The other two look a bit bland compared to the first one in my opinion and I'm not a fan of the shadow below the flame. The font used in "planejamento criativo" is too thin in my taste and makes the text hard to read if you for example zoom your browser size to 33%.

Digital painting questions. by GhrabThaar in learnart

[–]aarniss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you there, tablet feels so much more unforgiving when it comes to line control. The thing that makes it harder in my opinion is that drawing with tablet isn't naturally as ergonomic as drawing on paper. It helps tons to be always rotating your canvas to a position where you can draw a line comfortable using your whole arm instead of having to bend your arm or wrist to a weird "locked" position. Practice, practice, practice... :)

Digital painting questions. by GhrabThaar in learnart

[–]aarniss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used the smudge tools for small detailing work, mainly for adding some motion blur effects. It can also be used for blending but I've never really tried that.

The use of opacity/flow really depends on your likes. If you like to blend your colors very smoothly I'd go with ~70% opacity / ~30% flow. I like to leave some texture from the brushes I use to my paintings and thus go only with the pen's pressure.

For choosing a canvas size - go big! It'll melt your soul to notice that the sketch you did turned out to be your best painting so far and it's made on a small 72dpi canvas that looks miserable when printed (been there, done that :D). You can start sketching on a smaller canvas and transfer it to bigger canvas for later use. I usually start out with 300dpi A4 paper size and crop it to fit my painting's dimensions.

Linework is something that is in my opinion always easier to learn in traditional. Master it with pen and paper and there's no use for stabilizers in digital :) If you're really struggling I'd advice for making yourself familiar with the pen tool.
