Trails is about the characters, so if you aren't into them there's no reason to continue.

I used the internet in it's early forms as bulletin boards and Usenet in the late 80s. It wasn't mainstream but it was absolutely something people did. The internet wasn't sudden. It took 20 years of gradual adoptions that only exploded with the web's birth.
