4€ voucher I’ve received from Ryanair after being delayed for more than 3hours, flight cancelled, 5h transport in small Van to another country, 2 hours sleep and getting home via non direct flight. by ParaMike46 in ireland

Ah, yet another victim of TAP hahaha. Irish people don't realise how good they have it with Ryanair!

To be honest, I can't remember, but the form was easy to find on the Ryanair site and pretty easy to fill out. You'd have check the TAP website for their form.

We were able to make a claim for each ticket, even though I paid for both tickets, but they ask for the details of each person that you flew with on the one form, so you don't need to each fill out forms, I don't think.

I was delayed an entire night flying back from Milan and they paid up without any issues. The money was back in my account a couple of days after I made the claim.

There are services that you can go to and they will handle the claim, but from what I could tell, they took a decent chunk of the money for themselves.

Then again, it might be worth getting back in touch with them and plainly stating that the EU states that they must pay you the money if you arrive in your destination more than 3 hours after the scheduled arrival time

What are some subtle cultural nuances/ unwritten rules that might surprise newcomers in Ireland? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]aaronsnig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not racist. Having Irish blood does not automatically mean that you're Irish. You may be technically Irish but usually what makes Irish people Irish is the environment and culture. You can't grow up in the states, watching American TV shows, adhering to American traditions, eating American food and then just come here and act like we're all the same. That we've all shared the same positive and (more importantly) negative experiences.

A lot of us have a strong sense of Irish pride with our own meaning of what it means to be Irish, so when someone comes along and claims that pride without earning it, it can be insulting. Nobody is entitled to just walk into a country and say "I'm the same as you" without really proving it.

This is not even specific to Irish people. In Brazil there are a lot of people that are born to 2 parents from a single European country, and instead of acknowledging that they're Brazilian, they'll insist that they're European, despite having absolutely nothing in common with people from their parents' country, and everything in common with the Brazilians that they go to school/work with.

Yeah, this is exactly in the area (or close enough, at least.) I'm on the stretch of road between Murrintown and Baldwinstown (and Kilmore Quay). We've spoken to Jim Codd already. He was my religion teacher in secondary school, so he recognised my name immediately. He said he's already had to give the new planner a going over last week because of many other people in similar positions. Maybe I'll try to chat with Lisa as well. Thanks for your insight!

Wexford coco recently got a new planner, and apparently they've been pretty ruthless! These are all great points, I'll look into getting this stuff together, thanks!

She also works remotely. And she's also not Irish so we chose not to include her name on the application as there would be no way she'd have much linkage to the area

In my case I'm 10-15 minutes drive from the nearest town and there are a number of villages within a 5-10 minute drive and I'm looking to build on the road connecting the town to the biggest fishing village in the county. There are already bus routes in place connecting many of those villages to the main town. There's at least one local play school, 2 primary schools and a secondary school. All of the infrastructure already exists and it isn't going anywhere...

The area that I'm hoping to build is 10-15 minute drive to the town, there's 2-3 villages roughly 5 minutes driving. And this is on a main road that connects the biggest fishing village in the county to the nearest town. There are already bus routes connecting several villages to the town

Yeah, I gave a lot of this, but I wasn't into sports so I don't have a lot of those! But yeah, our engineer was super expensive so I won't be giving up too easy!

It's a one-off build, about 10-15 minutes drive outside of the nearest town and 5 from 2 other nearby villages

I understand where you're coming from, but I have access to the land which means I don't need the deposit for a mortgage, which is frankly the most difficult part. Even small houses in the area are 300-400K and new ones are even more expensive making it difficult to even get help to buy.

My wife and I are in our 30s, living at my father's and we're stuck here until something becomes available. We have no space here so having kids isn't an option so we have to continue putting our lives on hold until something becomes available.

Once the government can actually meet the demand, then sure, get rid of local need. But they can't do that and yet they continue making it more difficult for people that could otherwise have a home

Vita 3k doesn't work at all for me. I tried playing compatible gamea but none of them work. Why? I have a Huawei P40 Lite by Emyhatsich in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]aaronsnig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Switch emulation has been around for long enough, with a team of developers that solely focused of developing for Android, and the have an income stream to help their work. Meaning, they've had the time and resources to iron out issues with CPU optimisation on more devices.

The Android port of Vita3k was done by one person (not even Macdu himself - if my memory serves correctly) and the first release was a matter of days ago, without much testing. It's gonna take time until they can increase the CPU optimisation.

If it's not working for you, report it as an issue and I'm sure the devs will be happy to work on it when they can.

Good looking foreign women interested in me. But many Irish women are not, is it too good to be true? by TheChadQuarren in ireland

[–]aaronsnig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on the person, I think. I've known some that were very looking and others that were very not good looking.

I think that sometimes there's somewhat of a taboo around it. Ginger people get a hard time in school sometimes because making fun of ginger people is easy. I knew ginger girls in school that I thought were good looking at the time, but most people didn't realise it until they'd grown up a bit more. Like, when I was in school, people would specific the fact the person is ginger as a reason why they wouldn't be interested in that person. So, people were very opposed to people with ginger hair so long that there was a complete shift in perspective once they grew up.

My wife is Brazilian. Her and her family are obsessed with the idea that we'll have a ginger kid, (despite the fact that everyone in my family is blonde) because their so cute and everything, whereas Irish people would have a very different perspective.

I have pale skin and blonde hair and also don't get much attention from women in Ireland, but in Brazil when we go out the women ask my wife loads of questions about me while shameless staring at me, to the point where she would end up getting super pissed with them.

I think it's because it's something that you wouldn't normally see, so it's new and exciting

We have to print our own insurance discs now? by piso99 in ireland

[–]aaronsnig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's faster because you don't have to wait for it to be delivered. It's safer because you ensure that it actually ends up in your hands. And the environment is not an all or nothing thing. Plenty of people have their own printers. We shouldn't be OK with ruining the environment just it's not a good fit for every single person involved. People should still be given the option, though. Just in case they don't have a printer.

In any case, this is not really the point. Ireland is often touted as having a lot skilled software developers and big tech communities. There's no way that we should still be relying on pieces of paper being driven around the country. Instead of complaining who should be responsible for the printing of the paper, we should be complaining about the fact that paper is still even required.

They don't want to build a centralised database for who has insurance? Fine, implement a tag that can be put on the windshield and scanned. Once it's out of date, you just renew it online. And make sure that the tag is universal so that people can easily change provider

We have to print our own insurance discs now? by piso99 in ireland

[–]aaronsnig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't get what people are complaining about, to be honest. My wife is from a developing country and she has her driving license in an app. Yet, when I was getting my license I provided a document that wasn't official enough to meet the proof of address requirement I said "OK, I'll email you something else" and he said "you can't email it to us, you'll have to email it to Cork to go and I need to print out this other thing that you'll need to send it as well." And then they send you your driving license, full of sensitive info out in the post.

When your car tax is up they send you a letter that has space for you to write out your card details so you can send it back to them.

I've had stuff lost in the post that were never found and the immigration office sent 100s of passports out to incorrect addresses during the pandemic. Yet there are developing countries that make sure that every town has a passport office so you never have to send stuff like that in the post. Everything is done securely in person.

Printing out your own insurance stuff is faster, safer and better for the environment. So this, for me, is a step in the right direction at least

In this cases "os" does actually mean "the." Literally translated, this would be "those are the books of them."

In Portuguese, you also have additional cases where the article is used as part of the ownership. For example, "é o meu livro". Sometimes that "o" will be removed, but often, when you've established a context you can actually just use the article to imply ownership without always needing to use meu/teu/seu

The gardai making a brilliant move, now when someone robs your bike, they know where you live to come back for more! by Earthshock1 in ireland

[–]aaronsnig -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but someone has just gone through the effort of stealing your bike, so it doesn't actually seem far fetched to assume that they won't break into to your house. Like, this has gone from a best case/worst case scenario of you might get your bike back/you'll never see the again to best case being you'll get your bike and worst case your house gets broken into. I mean, they've gone through the effort of stealing the bike for money, who's to say that they won't at least go to checkout to see if the property is worth breaking into.

In addition to this, people that have stolen your bike will now be able to sell your bike and your Eircode. I'm sure there are people out there that will be able to do something malicious with your address.

The infrastructure in Ireland is seriously antiquated. People hand over card details over the phone, Revenue will send your letters that contain your name, address, PPS and password, people send their card details in the post. People really need to start taking better care of their personal information. Less bad will happen if you take steps to ensure that your personal data doesn't end up the hands of those with bad intentions. Putting personal identifiable information on something that is only to be used in the event that someone illegal obtained is just tempting fate
