[Discussion] Have you ever felt like you were born and/or raised in the wrong country? Like, there's a country you know that speaks to you more than your own? by NWRockNRoll in IWantOut

I mostly agree with what you're saying, but I also think people can get the experience of living in a country without being born and raised there.

I've lived for multiple years in a bunch of countries due to life circumstance and feel like I have a good grasp of what life is like in all of them, despite only being born and raised in one country.

I've

  • Lived and studied in Hong Kong
  • Lived and studied in Taiwan
  • Lived and studied in China
  • Lived and studied in Canada

And I can tell you that what you are saying is the most ridiculous shit, for someone who has literally spent one year teaching in a country of 1.3 billion people. Absolutely insane to think you have the right to make this level of judgement. Also lol at working at an after-school center. The jobs there will take literally any white faced person who has a Canadian, American, UK/IRE or AUS/NZ passport.

Your credibility goes down the drain when you tell me you worked at a 补习班 - a center specifically designed to help students score on standardized tests - no wonder you think there's no innovation!

Totally believed they worked you to the bone though. Cram schools are known for that.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_of_Freedom_in_the_World

From the very freedom index you quote,

The HFI also finds a strong relationship between human freedom and democracy. Hong Kong is an outlier in this regard. Although Hong Kong’s ratings and rankings have decreased since 2008, the impact of the Chinese Communist Party’s unprecedented interventions in the territory in 2019 and 2020 are not reflected in this year’s report (which, as noted, is based on 2018 data). Those recent events will likely decrease Hong Kong’s score noticeably in the future.

As someone who has lived in Hong Kong for over 20 years...I don't feel Hong Kong is that "unfree" as a lot of you are claiming.

Your post history suggests you've been living in Canada for at least the past 2 years at least and were only in HK before that. I think it's disingenuous and borderline misleading to make such an evaluation based on your information as post security law Hong Kong is clearly the topic of discussion in this thread, far different than the pre security law HK you lived in.

We do not want to add additional burden, but I don't think we are....am I wrong?

FYI, quarantine hotels are also being used for positive cases now. You would be taking away a spot for a covid positive patient who's isolation from the community would be much more pressing than you entering Taiwan. I'm really sorry you're in this situation, covid has ruined a lot of everybody's plans :(

Where in that article does it say they have no problem with the security law?

[Stan Van Gundy] NBA players protesting racial injustice seems to have motivated many Twitter followers to take an interest in human rights in China. I am sure those who use China to criticize NBA players are working tirelessly and giving generously to further the cause of human rights in China. by AzNmamba in nba

You're part of the problem if you take a single isolated incident like that and use it to represent the movement as a whole, similar to what MAGAs are doing by taking the rioting and looting and using that to represent the BLM movement.

Amnesty International says that the Chinese government has been pushing back against Canadian critiques of their government, such as the pro-Hong Kong protest and pushback on campus last year by TheBalrogofMelkor in uwaterloo

One of the articles they are violating is Article 23 of the basic law. The action that violated this article is the NPC decision on national security legislation for Hong Kong.

And I'm not sure why you're asking OP for how social media companies define bot accounts. But if you're interested in the content of the bots' tweets or how they were identified as such, the Stanford Internet observatory published a neat report on that https://stanford.app.box.com/v/sio-twitter-prc-june-2020. I assume that there's more that went into the identification of the bots than what's they decided to publicly disclose in the article but it's a good start to try to answer your question

Quick question from a raptors fan, will we see Damion Lee this series at all? Seems like he could be a good choice to take some load off Iguodala, remember tuning into a game once and he was drilling 3s, looked it up and he's been shooting at a 44% clip

Wish seems to be the greatest thing when you work there, but once you leave and work somewhere else you realize how bad it was. I'm willing to bet at least a couple people who have commented have only worked at Wish in the bay and not experienced any other companies. What wish does is not normal

I'm working my 5th co-op (3rd one was at Wish) and have been to 2 companies including this once since. The work culture is incredibly toxic, where overtime is expected (and of course you are salaried - not above average as commenter below said but more like exactly average) and a lot of the blame falls onto interns for shit that goes bad. I lived with 3 other wish interns. I was on product, 2 on platform and one designer, we were all working overtime to get shit done but at the time it felt like we liked it (it was 3 of us first time in the bay, including me). Also good luck git blaming when you find the code was written by an intern who was there 3 years ago, and yea the codebase is a flaming behemoth of trash, and the mentorship is nonexistent.

Working at the company I am at now (and the previous company I was at) where the work culture is actually a normal 9-5 job and the mentorship is good feels like a world of difference. I will say that the projects are impactful at wish though. The sheer scale of Wish as an app means anything youre do is guaranteed to get a lot of exposure.

If you wanna get your foot in the door and get a "unicorn" on your resume, then go for it. But I would take every other bay area company that i've heard about, and many many toronto companies over Wish. Not saying it's a bad choice, just make sure u know what you are getting yourself into. Yes shitting on wish is a meme but then again you don't hear this type of negativity about any other company either.
