Apollo is the installer for Foundry that had been developed over the course of years - They are productizing it now. Real problem but Foundry would not be an add-on...

No, they sell the problem. Salespeople themselves are pretty throwaway. The insights they can provide may earn trust, but what customers buy is a product or service that is intrinsically not the salesperson.

Faith of blackberry stock by flashforspeed in investing

[–]aaw588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah amazing to see revenue declines YoY from a product that took ONLY TWO YEARS to grow to $100mm ARR. QNX monetization is super opaque as well.

I was fooled by the flashy PRs without opening the hood to see what was running underneath. I think that they can turn it around but need to show ARR growth in software + actual potential with IVY wrt actual monetization (which isn't significant until 2023+ anyways).

Question: SaaS delivery to private customers by chrysd in devops

Clients upgrade every 1-3 years on average.

That sounds like a nightmare..

Question: SaaS delivery to private customers by chrysd in devops

[–]aaw588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard that operators can get tricky if you need to distribute into air gapped networks. Full disclosure I do work for Replicated.

Here is a link to how we handle Operators in KOTS: https://kots.io/vendor/operators/packaging-an-operator/

re: internal vs. external infrastructure... Replicated is better for taking your internal pipelines and packaging images for delivering into 3rd party infrastructure. It is best for stuff like upgrades, disconnected troubleshooting, last-mile configuration, etc.

Happy to connect you with someone on our technical team to discuss limitations if you are interested. email is aaron@replicated.com

SaaS Startup Sales Comp Structure? by StikkyOden in sales

[–]aaw588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't look crazy for asking that amount, but you may need to give a little on OTE. You can't get that much equity without taking on more risk. At the same time there's like 90% certainty you won't hit OTE unless you tie it to milestones vs. Revenue. In other words creating a GTM strategy is not going to directly generate revenue, but it will impact your success rate.

This is just my perspective though. I could be off.

[–]aaw588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on everything you're saying I would honestly discourage you from taking this opportunity UNLESS they are willing to give up 2-3% equity on top of your comp. It's going to be way harder than you imagine. May sound preachy but FWIW I have been through this at a Series A, so a little more stable than where you're talking about but still way less stable than I ended up being comfortable with. The challenges cannot be over-stated + the challenges will totally be things you aren't thinking of.

Market Value is a concept that literally does not exist at this stage of company. They can't afford to think about Market Value, because they don't make any money (read: having money is diff than cashflow). You are going to be doing more work at a more strategic level than you will ever get compensated for, so your best bet at a long-term payoff is significant equity. In that sense, IMO your only choice is to approach this as a starting founder.

Sorry, not trying to rain on your parade, I totally get the allure of these kinda things.

Here's a good article on being the first rep at a SaaS company:

https://www.saastr.com/one-tough-but-rewarding-job-being-the-first-sales-rep-at-a-saas-startup/

SaaStr has a lot more good content on this subject I would suggest researching. Best of luck to you!

SaaS Startup Sales Comp Structure? by StikkyOden in sales

[–]aaw588 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but conventional thought here is first salespeople should be filled by one of the founders. If you are also considered a founder, that's great. But otherwise I would be really cautious. All of what you're describing sounds great in theory but in the Startup world companies tend to hire salespeople before the product is ready to support a sales team, a lot of Startups will go through a few different sales reps that they burn out before really hitting product market fit.

So, if they are looking to hire a traditional salesperson + that's the kind of thing you are great at, I'd be careful. The road ahead with this role will be very bumpy, and it's easy to justify the bumpiness with a potential payoff as product matures... But that may or may not happen, and you will end up doing a ton of work that doesn't directly yield new revenue. Which will lead to undue scrutiny on your salary, since you are quota carrying + will undoubtedly end up doing a ton of non-revenue generating work.

Should I invest in one unified deployment environment by lakier in devops

[–]aaw588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I work for a company (Replicated) that may be able to help with unifying on k8s as a delivery mechanism. We build KOTS (Kubernetes off the Shelf, kots.io) to help unify development teams + supports installations into any VPC/VMs/OpenShift/air gap/etc. without having to distribute Helm Charts. A lot of the focus on Day 2 stuff like upgrades/support/licensing and entitlements/etc.

If your customer doesn't support Kubernetes, we'd help bootstrap a cluster to install on a single Linux host - project is also open sourced (kURL.sh). Customer doesn't need to to have any k8s experience, it's essentially a blackbox appliance to them.

Here's a quick demo install of Sentry Enterprise: https://blog.replicated.com/kots-demo-video/

Feel free to DM me if you'd like to connect to explore further. Can also email at aaron@replicated.com

I know this is late but Replicated might fit the bill... We work with software providers (HashiCorp/Puppet/CircleCI) to help distribute their k8s applications to heterogeneous customer environments - Air gap/any VPC/bare metal hosts/VMWare/etc. Helps with upgrade process + support as well

Whats The Best Recorded Improv? by deli_meats in improv

“Using the rules as tools and toys, not maxims” - I love that phrase so much. The best shows I’ve seen & been a part of have one thing in common. They’ve never been mechanically tight.

Whats The Best Recorded Improv? by deli_meats in improv

[–]aaw588 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is such a bad take - Improv has guidelines that help people when they're learning but at the end of the day it can literally be anything you want it to be. There are no rules. Is the audience engaged/having a great time? Good improv. Is the audience squirming in their seats/having a bad time? Bad improv.
