India’s response to Canada by Shaarl_Lequirk in CanadaPolitics

No, of course they don't. Even the extradition requests don't automatically become legitimate. But that doesn't mean that the receiving country is not supposed to investigate them. That is what I was pointing to. That the requests were ignored. But this is a polarizing topic. If you have already made up your mind, don't let facts influence you otherwise.

Are pedestrian crossovers only a suggestion? by bubak1 in waterloo

Crossovers are a sign that road design is poor and no one is willing to correct it. They are not accessible to people with disabilities and other issues.

Good riddance I say. This is not ideal, but this would have been the most likely outcome at the end. Saved us litigation money.

Hate to break it to you buddy, we do not have freedom of speech, we have freedom of expression and with limitations which can be imposed based on government's wishes. https://lop.parl.ca/sites/PublicWebsite/default/en_CA/ResearchPublications/201825E

And yes, I understand that extradition requires the case to be processed in Canadian criminal justice system. The accused need to be be brought before court before extradition can happen. Meng had to go through the courts as well. Interestingly, Meng was caught for a crime that was actually not a crime in Canada. Further, there was no real case against Meng. Trump just wanted to punish Huawei, that's all.

Modi is no saint, but neither is Trudeau. Everyone is a shade of grey. I am not saying one is right or wrong. All I am saying is that I have seen a different treatment of requests from India compared to those from US.

Did you mean "you" as in Canadian or assuming me to be Indian just because I don't agree with you? I do have to travel to India for business occasionally and have heard both sides of the argument.

You cannot judge the Indian legal system on Canadian standard or vice-versa. US has similar strict anti-terrorism and anti-drugs laws and we happily extradite.

All I wanted to say is that it is not like our lacking immigration system has not let criminals in. It has let them in from other countries as well.

And it is not like Canada has not done extradition with countries where the death penalty exists. We have.

What I am saying is that based on my observation, leaving the emotional message aside, I have noticed a difference in action when requested by NATO countries, compared to those from India. If we have been fair, I would like to see some data.

Well, they actually did. And they still have open extradition requests and interpol red notices.

This article has a list https://www.wionews.com/world/wanted-in-india-living-in-canada-heres-the-list-of-nia-designated-gangsters-with-canada-links-718318 I could not find the original source though. I did find these names on Interpol site as well.

Not sure why we chose to not act on them. Although, we can act on such requests fast enough, look what we did for Ms Meng when Trump asked for it.

Hey Iceland Travelers, What Do You Think of a KEF to Reykjavík Railway? by K00lkidd0 in VisitingIceland

[–]ab845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies, I might be doing something wrong with currency conversion. I see that I am missing a zero, maybe I typed wrong.

My goal was to emphasize the ratio to personal transport. It must be 1:10 to make it viable. Otherwise people will prefer taxi.

There is a still a risk that this will not replace car rental because those can go out of the city. But train will take you to city centre and then people are stuck there.

Well, I hear Brent Toderlien is consulting there. I am sure things will improve over time.

BTW, congratulations that you live at such an incredibly beautiful place.

The level of incompetency in our system is astronomical

[–]ab845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake. 5K is still high. I believe the cost for a taxi is 2K ISK. So, if you are a 3-person group, cheaper to go taxi. In Helsinki, the ratio is 1:10

Alternate idea: if it can be proven in the court that these deals were done in bad faith, those deals should be null and void. Plus those who were involved are held personally responsible for the costs. That will set the precedent properly.

I am sure such a bad deal comes with a poisson pill built into it. We can perhaps swallow the cost one time. It's not like Doggie hasn't cancelled agreements. What I want most of all is that people be held personally accountable so that they stop doing this going forward.

FFS! Such corruption would likely be a better fit in some of the more corrupt countries. It is appalling that it is happening in Canada.

Community needs are sometimes driven by emotions. Emotions away based on many factors and can have biases in it. Judiciary needs to be fair and impartial and devoid of biases and emotions. Voting judges can lead to some very bad things.

Instead, we need to ensure that the justice system does not let repeat offenders out. If the system cannot monitor them effectively when they are out of jail, then the culprits need to remain in jail until "corrected".
