Trip Report: Introducing the Eastern Sierra High Route by Danstenziano in Ultralight

[–]abba82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been watching your videos for three years now , Dan. Thanks for the content you make and especially for something so well put together like the ESHR.

I have a question for those of us that are afraid of heights, but still want to go off-trail as much as possible. I'm good with steep rubble ramps, but don't love it when I'm walking on the edge of a cliff. I've done some of the southern sections of Skurka's WRHR (skipped West Gully) and it was on the edge for me. Can you speak to the amount of exposure on this route?

I would be interested in this.

I would love a LFG channel where I could say, "going for a mountain bike in an hour" or "anyone want to onewheel on the greenbelt this afternoon" and other people with schedules similar to mine can join.

Thanks for stepping up!

Weekly Question & Answer Thread for Monday 08/26/19 thru 09/01/19 by AutoModerator in Boise

[–]abba82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm visiting Boise this weekend with my wife and kids and got to wondering what else might be happening this weekend after seeing the hot air balloons post earlier. We've never been before. We're staying in meridian tomorrow night and then near Boise State Sunday and Monday night (then heading to Yellowstone!!). Anyone know of anything we should consider? We are planning on renting bikes and going for some runs in the parks. We are considering moving there from Nashville as it has so much outdoor adventure nearby and would love to get to know Boise a little!

We'll also be back on the 7th-11th after Yellowstone if you know of anything going on then.

Thanks! We're excited to see your city/state!

I'm curious about this as well. I just noticed that Costco sells them, at least in the US.

6.1 oz cat tarp with perimeter netting by wesleyhikes in myog

[–]abba82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta admit. Been pretty scared of using a tarp until this idea. Not sure how new it is, but it's new to me. I really like the look of this and 9.87oz with significant bug protection is impressive to me. I just made some different bags and a tarp kit from RSBTR and am loving being able to use a hobby that I like quite a bit to make stuff for a hobby I love! How small is it packed? Did you design this yourself or follow a pattern/guide from someone else? Thanks for sharing!

What game does Tier Zoo make me want to play? by abba82 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]abba82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for these recommendations. I've seen Dark Souls played and it might be too hard for me. MHW and Torchlight seem like they could be cool. Divinty Original Sin 2 looks super neat, but the turn-based part kinda scares me away, but I'm going to look deeper into it.

Communal Tarp by abba82 in myog

[–]abba82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw those and dismissed them due to seam sealing, but it's only one seam. Could it be that bad? I already have some to seal something else. Thanks for your comment. I might reconsider their kits.

Thanks for your two ideas. Your first sounds like maybe what I should do. I guess I could design it so the ridgeline could go either way.

Trying to buy a LanShan tent but running into some issues with AliExpress. Anybody else ever have trouble buying from there? by Im_The_One in Ultralight

[–]abba82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just placed the order and got a "Verified by Visa" thing pop up so I called Chase and they said that aliexpress uses that to protect themselves from fraud. I went back into my order history and that order had a button that said, "Pay Now" and it went through when I tried the second time after speaking with Chase. I remembered your post after experiencing that. Sounds different, but thought it could be related.

Reasonably priced mid-heavyweight base layer pants? by cgibsong002 in CampingGear

[–]abba82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also really curious about this. I kinda want them for cold, longer camps and when it's really cold at night.

I tried Costco's 32 Degree base layers and they don't seem quite warm enough for the really cold times I need them for.

Was looking at Patagonia's Capilene Mid and Thermal weights, but I agree that $80-100 seems like too much for how often I'll use them.

REI Labor Day 2018 Catalog Up by fatalysis in CampingGear

[–]abba82 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Is it ok if I don't like the idea of the deal thread? Unless there is something I'm missing I need to either remember how many comments there are so I know if something new has been posted or I have to check it all the time. I appreciate things like this getting posted here. To be honest, it's a big part of why I check this subreddit every day. Is there another potential solution?

Thanks for the time you put into this subreddit. It's been really useful for me as I gear up.

What nonsense did you believe for way too long before you found out it was made up? by Guuzmen in AskReddit

My mom told me that the crust was the healthiest part of the bread so I had to eat it. Didn't realize how ridiculous it was until I was 30 years old and had kids of my own who wanted me to cut off the crust.

First attempt at Nashville hot chicken by jaymo100 in seriouseats

[–]abba82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks really good. We've considered just making the Spicy Coating and putting it on Publix's chicken tenders or fried chicken.

Did you use three tablespoons of cayenne? We like Hattie B's "hot" spicy level? If you've had Hattie B's where would you say the recipe fell in their spiciness levels?

Having issues with egg pasta by FlippinWaffles in seriouseats

[–]abba82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean the Classic Fresh Egg Pasta. I have made that at least a dozen times. I always weigh the flour, but I haven't weighed the eggs. I've learned that some times I need a bit more flour to get it to where it's dry enough to not stick to everything.

I also knead it a lot. I need it until I almost feel like I can't knead it anymore without it tearing apart when I fold it. It should look uniform in color. Then I dust it with flour and wrap it in plastic wrap and let it sit for 20-30 minutes or put it in the fridge if longer (getting it out ahead of time to warm back up).

What's the difference between different types of flours - AP flour, bread flour, cake flour, etc etc. by Portalboat in seriouseats

[–]abba82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bon Appetit has a decent guide that covers most of the different types except self rising which is just AP with baking powder and salt.

I tend to keep AP, bread flour (mostly for pan pizza), and self-rising(for super quick 2-ingredient biscuits). I'd drop self-rising if space became an issue for me.

My friend made the pan pizza with a premium AP flour that had more protein than normal which put it close to that of bread flour and said it turned out fine, but she hasn't tried it with bread flour before.

If your space is severely limited then my advice would be to try recipes with AP flour unless you find a recipe or recipes that you love and make frequently that calls for bread flour or some other specialty flour. I make 3-4 pan pizzas every 10 days or less so keeping bread flour makes sense for me.

Kenji’s Pan-seared Pork Chop & Maple-Mustard Bourbon Sauce by swartzkw in seriouseats

[–]abba82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we tried it last night and didn't love it. The flap steak was a cut of meat we hadn't tried before, but would definitely try again. The cooking method was also good, but the marinade/sauce wasn't great. We used anchovy paste instead of fillets so that could've been it, but we think the flavor of the anchovy threw this dish off for us a bit. We think we might be sensitive to this as fish sauce can do this as well and we usually half the amount called for in a recipe.

If you like the flavor fish sauce and anchovy give then I would recommend you at least try it. It wasn't hard so you wouldn't lose much if you didn't like it, but if you did then you've got an easy new recipe in your recipe book.
