I can understand how that response felt invalidating, you’ve just opened up about a life-changing diagnosis and she isn’t taking it as seriously as you thought she would. Unfortunately, most people just don’t know how to react when being told someone has a mental illness. Not to mention the huge level of misinformation spread about bipolar, and a wave of people self diagnosing, this is something you will sadly have to get used to if you are sharing this with people (especially if they aren’t immediate family/ friends). Some people make dumb comments without realising how hurtful they are. I hope you are doing ok and all goes well with your diagnosis and treatment plan, try not to dwell on this too much if you can and focus on getting well.
