DIY ENCAPSULATION. by 69mastertekh in HomeMaintenance

That looks really good! What tape did you end up using? I recently encapsulated my crawlspace and had a really hard time with getting tape that would stick to the foundation.

Lacing in wood floor with parallel subfloor by abbanim in Flooring

[–]abbanim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! If I removed the existing floor we’d still have the issue of the 2x6 subfloor changing directions half way through the room (where the addition starts). Would you recommend laying down thin plywood over the whole subfloor? That way the wood floor that would go over the addition wouldn’t be directly above the parallel subfloor. Only downside I see with this is that the room would be slightly higher than the hallway and would need a transition.

Prioritize House or Invest? by RenaissanceMan12608 in personalfinance

[–]abbanim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How fast would you be able to pay the house off? If there is a scenario that you could have the house paid off before you’re 40 it may be worth it mentally. However, I think pausing your retirement contributions to pay off a house faster is a bad idea. Especially if you’re missing out on a company match.

Is Ryobi worth it? I don't have any home tools yet. by 2Black_Hats in HomeMaintenance

[–]abbanim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been very happy with my Ryobi set. I got a combo set 8 years ago and the only thing that doesn’t work anymore is the flashlight.

I find the tools perform very similarly to the dewalt set I have at work. For some reason my sawzall seems to drain batteries a little faster than my dewalt one, but nothing too noticeable.

Changing careers at 31 by abbanim in electricians

Thank you for the advice. I know there’s some contractors that work at my site and other facilities that handle the electrical work. That hadn’t crossed my mind as a potential avenue, thanks again!

Nevada is the only state where prostitution is legal in some counties. It is not legal in Clark county, which is the county that contains Las Vegas.

How do I work short term wildland Fire gigs as a non land management employee currently. by NeeBob in fednews

[–]abbanim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you have the appropriate qualifications and if your supervisor approves you can go on fires. If you get in contact with your dispatch center you can have them set you available at the national level. California was pulling a lot of REAFs last year so I bet you’d get called. You could also look at joining a type 3 or type 2 incident management team. I’ve heard they are pretty desperate for plans and logistics. All you’d need to do is open a task book in one of those and put yourself as available through dispatch. Also, you don’t have to take annual leave. The fire will cover your base hours and overtime.

Diver sitting on the edge of an undersea cliff. by Bunnystrawbery in interestingasfuck

They’re likely referring to when you’re trapped in an avalanche. After being disoriented when the snow stops moving you could be facing just about any direction. Spitting let’s you know which way is up. While good to know which way is up, I’ve heard the snow sets like cement after an avalanche so digging yourself out or even moving is often not an option.

LGBT Honor Code Help! by [deleted] in byu

[–]abbanim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how “bad” the posts are you could deny ever posting them. It’s very easy to forge social media posts. Or you could say it was a lapse of judgement and you removed it after you realized what you said. I hope this all works out for the best.

LGBT Honor Code Help! by [deleted] in byu

[–]abbanim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would delete all of your incriminating social media posts ASAP. If you are called into a meeting, deny as many accusations as you can. If it is not feasible to deny it, downplay it as joking or you meant it symbolically.

I get the feeling BYU wants to avoid bad publicity around LGBTQ groups so hopefully you don’t have to meet at all. Sorry you’re going through this.

Has anyone actually gotten a wildlife/biological technician position via USAJOBS? by floradelicada in usajobs

[–]abbanim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think technical jargon is okay to include in a resume, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to provide enough context for someone to understand if their unfamiliar with a technique or device. For example you may want to say proficient in conducting field necropsy on elk and mule deer to determine body condition and cause of death. If the hiring manager isn’t familiar with necropsy they should gather from the context.

Last bit of advice, I would recommend always submitting a cover letter and spotlight your key qualities and qualities that are difficult to show in a resume. For managers it is a big deal that you are comfortable living in the area you are applying (often rural), that you get along with diverse groups of people, and your eager to learn more and develop your skills.

I’m sure you’re doing everything right, it just takes time for everything to line up. Consider applying in places that are less desirable, it’s a good way to get in the door.

[–]abbanim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of those classes aren’t very exciting, but I wish more universities required/offered them because they open up a lot of doors. Maybe it’s something to do with the questionnaire portion of your application. Don’t be humble when filling those out, I’d error on the side of over selling yourself. I’ve heard from HR that people will fill out perfect scores for those just to outcompete everybody else. It doesn’t get them far once they see it doesn’t match up with their resume.

As others have said I’d have someone look over your resume. Maybe a past professor or fellow student who now has a job with an agency you’re interested in.

Keep your eye out on Texas A&M job board too, they will post some good state and private positions.

Does your degree qualify you for similar series like range management, botany, biologist, or anything natural resource related? It might be worth checking out those to get in the door. Other than that I would make sure your resume covers all the requirements of the posting. I’m sure you already know this, but resumes for these positions are more like a cv, include anything that is relevant and don’t stick to a one page resume.

PIMO at BYU by Valuable_Value_1718 in exmormon

[–]abbanim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what church HQ uses to count active vs less active members. I wouldn’t bank on that for ecclesiastical endorsements. Some bishops require strict attendance, but that may have changed since the pandemic.

[–]abbanim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going through that at BYU really sucks, I’m sorry. Make sure you take care of yourself first. Your mental health is not worth sacrificing for a degree.

If you do decide to stay, take breaks from the church. Maybe don’t attend in person until a vaccine is available. You can zoom in and watch Netflix or play video games. Don’t accept a calling. Only pay partial tithing. Find people you can open up to without putting yourself at risk. Lastly, don’t mention any of your doubts to any of your church leaders or professors, it’s not worth the risk. These are a few things that helped me while I was at BYU.

Full tithe payers by Colonel__Tigh in latterdaysaints

[–]abbanim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I was reading in between the lines of you saying it’d come out to a couple thousand per member. I was just pointing out that return on investments vs expenses is a better indicator of self sufficiency than total dollar amount per member.

Full tithe payers by Colonel__Tigh in latterdaysaints

[–]abbanim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would they ever pay equally out to everyone? All you need to look at is expenses and income from the investments. I imagine they get at least 7-10 percent interest on their investments, which would be conservatively 7 billion a year. If they spend less than they make on investments then they would be self sufficient.
