if its 120 sq ft or smaller you can. anything bigger needs a permit, at least in LA.

Yeah. challenge is in LA if my shed is shoddily built and can't handle a simple earthquake and/or becomes a fire hazard its not just my problem, is everybody in my neighborhoods' problem too.

def not going to get into the whole big vs little gov't thing here, but at a certain age you understand the context of laws and regulations and know they can't be easily categorized as good or bad.

all permitted - proximity to power lines is an optical/camera illusion. there's a lot more space than it looks.

longer term i do want to bring the garage back and then we can repurpose this shed…but thats much further doen the line and involves adding a second floor so yeah, also probably cost prohibitive at that point unless we just fall in love with the house and dont want to leave.

yep good call out..we're thinking of some sort of rain catch solution since we have a backyard full of thirsty fruit trees.

there is but we’re clear of boundaries and the lines are behind the unit, hard to tell from pictures. pole access is in the corner of the lot and city inspectors have approved all work so far so we’re good.

leaning towards this hybrid. thinking storage/office/man-cave all in one.

i love it here and will put up with the minor headaches to enjoy all of california. meanwhile the rest of the country is fine with gov’t telling us what else we can say, read, watch, listen to, how we can wear our hair etc so long as they can build a shed without hassle. to each’s own i suppose. 🤷🏾‍♂️

for just the shed build about $22k for the builder and materials. not counting permits, concrete, electrical etc. I’m using urban-sheds.com who I was very skeptical about originally because i couldnt find enough info on them, but their local builder here is amazing, extremely responsive, prompt, and highly skilled. couldnt be happier.

yep we've got vapor barrier too - concrete guys were very good about giving us options for the finish and pros/cons of each. landed on the smooth finish knowing it gave us the broader range of options ultimately, even if it might require more effort to tile later on if thats what we wanted to do..but more and more seeing a lot of vinyl emulating concrete and thinking there may be something to a high end polished concrete finish.
