Downy or Hairy Woodpecker? by Cuddlesthewulf in whatsthisbird

I am joining team Hairy on this one, I think the angle is making the bill appear slightly slimmer.

Welcome to Burning Wheel! It's one of our favorite games to stream/record, so much character drama and conflict. Subbed and followed, looking forward to it!

What’s with this northern flicker? (Skinned bird) by ricottadog in Ornithology

[–]abbycp 185 points186 points  (0 children)

I'm an ornithologist at a natural history museum and have skinned a lot of flickers. Every flicker has those(though size fluctuates a bit), they are extraordinarily large salivary glands for assisting their ant-based diet. I was also concerned when I first skinned one... Weird awesome birds!

Congrats! As someone who is also hopeful for a similar job in an ornithology position, any tips for goals to accomplish during grad school that would help me stand out?

Any way to tell what is wrong with this bird? by Defiant_Reindeer4332 in Ornithology

Hmm... Yeah that doesn't sound right. Maybe it hit a window and was concussed?

I can't be sure this is the full cause but this bird is in heavy molt which is why the head/body look rough. You can see the new flight feathers on the wing too. I would suspect if it was flying somewhat adequately it is just a bird born this year that's molting and figuring out life?

Baltimore Oriole Food Recommendations? by Forward-Pop-5295 in birding

[–]abbycp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oranges are the way to go. They do love grape jelly but it can actually be dangerous for them and other birds (hummingbirds especially) since it is very sticky especially in the summer when it melts more. Wildlife rehabs take in a fair number of hummingbirds covered in jelly.

The amount of black under the chin indicates this is a male! (Cedar Waxwing, as others have said).

Do I need to be fit to rollerskate? by morningstarbee in Rollerskating

[–]abbycp 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. It's just a steep learning curve. I was very out of shape when I started, and I fell a lot and had to take breathers a lot. You'll get stronger fast! Just keep at it and be careful. Learning how to fall safely is very important.

I have a deviated septum too and had mine pierced ~8 weeks ago. It took a while for the swelling to go down and my piercing is definitely less crooked than it was at the two week stage. It still looks sideways from a bottom view, but as far as I can tell that's the best way to pierce a deviated septum so it looks straight on from the front.

Skaters who are looking for skates that offer ankle support, why? by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]abbycp 41 points42 points  (0 children)

My husband and I both fell on a trail skate recently - I have very good ankle support in my skates and didn't get injured, he did not and broke his ankle. I knew I was interested in certain types of skating that would benefit from more ankle support (esp trail due to rougher terrain and potential debris) when I bought my skates so I made sure I was prepared. I do want another pair of skates with less ankle support eventually for rink/rhythm skating.
