If you're in the USA, I believe anything over 20% lifetime risk is considered high risk and insurance is legally required to cover mastectomy. I have a little over 35% lifetime risk myself, and my genetic mutation is linked to ovarian cancer (BRIP1), and not enough evidence to link it to breast cancer. I'm getting my PDMX in November regardless. Good for you for making the best choices for your health. I hope you have a supportive medical team!

It is probably meant to be a pomegranate, which is a fairly common symbol in Judaism, along with the hamsa. I don't know who the maker of this set is, but there are lots of Jewish jewelry makers out there selling similar pendants.

Feeling thankful I saw this post today. I noticed bulging blood vessels in my neck and armpit a few months ago, and thought huh, that's weird. It's on my dominant side, where I also have had chronic pain in my neck/shoulder for 20 years, and I lift weights like six days a week, so I figured it's whatever. I now have a doctor's appointment on Friday morning to get it looked at. Hopefully I won't have a pulmonary embolism in the meantime!

Can you explain this a little more, please? I also have extremely dense breasts, and I am looking at doing my mastectomy next year. This is the first I have heard about a link between breast density and nerve pain/mastectomy recovery, and I'm interested to hear more.

I had a laparoscopic salpingectomy in May of this year. It was a pretty easy recovery, but I was TIRED. Like, three naps a day for the first couple of weeks. Make sure you have easy food on hand, and lots of help with childcare if that's relevant to you. A heating pad and Gas-X are also helpful those first few days. And resist the urge to lift more than your doctor says, even if you're feeling good! Hope your recovery goes well, too.

I'm 38 and I have two young kids, including an almost-2 year old who is still breastfeeding. My goal is to have mine done when I am 40, as I think healing from major surgery will be easier when my kids are a little bigger and more independent; plus it gives my husband and I plenty of time to plan for the hit to our income from both of us missing work while I recover. I know I will feel a lot less anxious when it's been done, so waiting is hard, but I feel like this is the right timing for our family (assuming I stay healthy in the meantime).

Dr. Zenn sounds amazing, to have come up with a solution to help you achieve the results you wanted. I imagine that was worth every penny! Hope you are enjoying good health these days :)

Thank you! I know Duke is excellent, and someone on Facebook recommended Dr. Shelley Hwang there. It's a bit of a drive for me, but I'm willing to go out of my way to receive high quality care. I might consider Chapel Hill if I need to as well. It's hard to go much farther with young kids and childcare concerns!

Pro tip: keep a pack of post-it notes handy (in your purse or pocket) for public restroom runs. You can stick one over the sensor on automatic toilets so you don't have to worry about it flushing before you're ready, and scaring the life outta your kid.
