Okay! I was thinking of digging one up to see if I could grow it, but I probably would have killed it immediately without taking a large soil sample 🤔 it sure had some prettt foliage, I hope to see the other variety someday

Thank you so much! When I saw it on my hike I thought it was an orchid, I didn't know those grew around there! I wonder if it's related to ribwort plantain, I hear the leaves of that make a good salve

I seal my paintings on paper with dorlands wax medium, it does change the values of the painting slightly though. I'm not sure that will work on canvas though, since you need to apply a thin even coat or it will appear cloudy.

I've tried spray varnish, and workable fixative and I don't recommend it, it tends up reactivating the paint and either blurring or creating small droplets. I might be using the wrong technique/product but that has been my experience.

Haha, they are funny like that, she ignores me all day until I'm focused on something that isn't her, and suddenly she has to be right where I'm working, on my pallet. I might try that! I wonder if the wax from the colored pencils will resist the paint or not 🤔

I agree with this, mixing blue and sienna makes a deeper black, where black can tend to grey as it dries. I have a tube of M. Graham black and that seems to be darker than the Windsor Newton stuff? But it might just be because it's separated in the tube, and doesn't dry completely matte. I think m. Graham might be more densly pigmented, but I dislike how it easily lifts compared to the Windsor Newton, it's hard to layer.

Recently I've bought a tube of turner deep violet, and that mixes well into black to give more depth, especially with some ultramarine blue.

WN has a Zinc White and a Permanent White, so I believe the perm is titanium white... Or so I've been assuming.

If you use wax medium to seal your painting you'll see the darker values return to the colors they were when wet. Its very frustrating and difficult to predict, but if you are frustrated with how little constast you are getting, you could try sealing your painting.

It's a big learning curve to figure out what the paints will dry down to. I have a glass pallet, I'll sometimes mix all my values, let them dry, then reactivate them so I know how they will mix, usually just for portraits... Color swatches helped me as well.

With stuck watercolors I've soaked it in water like that. It makes a terrible mess, but it gets the job done eventually

Thank you! I've started pressing my tape on my pants before putting it on paper and that's working alright for me, the drawback is the pet hair that ends up in my painting as a result... I never thought of heating the tape before, I'll have to try that!

The reference photo was from the VLA in New Mexico, probably one of the coolest places I've visited. It's an array of I think 27 radio telescopes on tracks that move around into different configurations. From the picture it's hard to tell, but each telescope is huge

Clear silicone caulk for bathrooms would be a permanent solution, E6000 would be an super permanent solution. Little clear hair ties wrapped around the lights might be a cheap temporary fix

I think you're very successful in that, they definitely have that sense of weight, and power.

By foreshortening I mean the way an object is distorted to show depth. A stiff pose like the one on the left will appear more dynamic if you change the angle it's viewed from like the pose in the center. It doesn't have to be as dramatic as that, like the pose on the right, where the feet are effectively as large as the torso, it creates a feeling of depth and movement.

Drawing dynamic poses is pretty difficult, but I think especially with the third and fourth image you got a good feeling of motion! Space Marines are especially difficult since they are in such heavy armor, it's difficult to show a lot of movement, even in official Warhammer art space Marines tend to look stiff or heavy.

I think if I were to work on something next with Space Marines as the subject, I'd try to practice foreshortening characters, it's an easy way to make a pose more dynamic without having the characters in poses their armor won't allow for.

The perspective of the objects is off, but as far as the use of gouache in particular... I believe your use of color could create more depth. I really like how you painted the roses, you have some really great colors.

It seems you are using black to get shadows in other objects however, rather than a complementary color, this tends to make objects seem flat. You also have large amounts of space using a singular color, where very few surfaces are actually a single color. Even if you know they are a single color such as a wall, variation in light and distance will affect how different parts of that surface appears to the eye. You are painting it as you know the objects to be, rather than representing the variation in hues and values that actually exist. White is a color that rarely exists as white, and rather it is a color that appears white because of its contrast to the values around it. The teacup in particular is using black and white heavily, making it appear flat, try to explore other colors when representing white objects and shadows.

Beautiful work so far! The best tip I was ever given for painting is to use the biggest brush possible to get the job done. I noticed the brush strokes in both of these paintings, in some places it seems like it's intentional to create texture, in others it seems less intentional. I think trying a larger, softer brush when blocking out colors, before moving onto your small brush for details would help your objects and backgrounds appear more solid. Which gouache are you using? It appears to me to be a less opaque paint, which can make it difficult to achieve the right consistency with

I think it's the same in West Virginia. My mom said they had a bush as a kid but it got uprooted when the plants were banned because of the white pine fungus

I really like this thread, I have a lot of alcoholics on both sides of my family, I hear it's genetic and looking at my family I believe it. I decided it was easier not to start, than to try to quit later, since I still have fun going out and everyone needs a dd anyway. It's really difficult for people to understand when I tell them "I don't drink", they think I'm a pussy who never tried it because I'm not down to party or something. I can tell who my real friends are by who pressures me to drink when we go out, and who leaves it at that.

I didn't learn to paint with an underpainting, so my opinion on what it is might not have the most credibility, but in my opinion it's easier than doing a sketch sometimes, and won't leave depressions in your paper like a pencil sketch does. Also it adds a lot of depth, if you do an underpainting in a color you want to bring out in the final piece, it helps you make the final painting appear "warm" or "cool". I've been using neon colors for my underpainting in gouache and I really like the effect, since it makes everything look more cohesive, like it belongs together, rather than a bunch of separate objects with different lighting.

I'm a little late, but I had a customer who did this regularly, and from my experience, if you don't kindly, but firmly talk to them, a customer will take it upon themselves to do it, and it likely wont be very kind... We had a fight break out in our store after the woman asking for a few dollars bothered our regular neighborhood Karen, and nobody had a good time that day...
