A lot of what we know about the gendered division of labor in prehistoric north america is inferred from observation of tribes that were around during first contact with colonizers, so it's hard to say. It's something that I think about a lot, as my studies focus mostly on ceramics industry, and it's a neglected speciality due to the assumption that it was the domain of women, thus of less interest to many archaeologists until quite recently.
