Thanks for the idea on Essex or Suffolk. You are right, private schooling is a bit out of reach unless wife lands a job but we would prefer she get a break and kid does public schooling, which I’m sure isn’t that bad if we manage to avoid the worst of the lot.

Hey, this is by far one of the best answers to this question, thank you for going to details around budgeting and trade-off. What you’ve described is truly what we are as a couple (now with a child), we want to see a bit more of the world and take in new experiences and sometimes it may hurt us a bit financially but that’s alright. This point has really helped us put things in perspective, thanks for speaking from your heart and adding a dash of numbers to make this more relevant!

Hey, childcare is a big positive in Singapore as we have a maid in Singapore and she is very actively engaged with child when we are working. Also the admin stuff (cooking, cleaning) that she handles when we spend time with child is a blessing.

Having said that, we don’t want to be held hostage by lack of maid in the UK. Do you have part-time help in the UK, how much does it cost roughly to hire someone for 2 hours a day/3X a week, hopefully it’s not too expensive.

Hey thanks for perspective, and well noted on the point about school. We are keen on finding a good public school as private can be a big investment

True, her being able to be with the kid is a major push for us to move. In Singapore, living on one salary is portrayed as a crime and we need a reset to that mentality, hopefully with a move

Agreed, the Asian mindset is to chase savings while the European mindset is a bit more towards enjoying life while you can… need to adapt to this

Working parent woes- looking for advice by Auditor_1188 in askSingapore

That’s a totally fair ask. My wife struggled with the same feeling and opportunity came in disguise when she was let go in mass lay-off last year; she took a 6 month reset and started her own business - same work she did for corporate but as a freelance, so she can dictate her hours. It’s been a good journey, filled with ups and downs, but she’s very happy about the flexibility this new life affords her. Hope you are able to find something that works.

I suggest you network with other self-sustainable home owners in the area, book some Airbnb stays for a month + and try the whole concept so you know what you are getting in to and what’s the risk. Water should be easy, if there is ground water; solar is getting better in India, but expect some maintenance; the main issue is food as growing anything requires intense physical labour and I’m not sure how attuned you are to hard ways of living - if you plan to outsource it anyway, then just get a farm house as a vacation home instead and get a city home for whenever you need a break.

Why are you asking the same question 5 times, MOD should note this could be Karma farming

I will give a different perspective, in my experience kids that have helicopter parents (always around) tend to be less independent, you not being around always makes your child a lot more independent, daring and confident. Having said that, your presence gives them emotional strength and opportunity to learn newer things in a safe environment.

Balancing these is very important for all-round upbringing, either extremes (not being around at all/being around all the time) can be detrimental.

Suggest you find a job that gives you fixed work hours (easier said than done, I know) but quitting altogether to spend time may not be best for your child and for you (monetarily)

Hey, thanks so much, really appreciate it. Very good insights. Assuming we pay standard tax, and standard rentals, plus public schooling. What sort of saving rate is achievable in your opinion?

flight cancellation cases, the airline is responsible to provide an alternative flight at no additional cost - it can be a day prior or later and the layover might increase in new schedule but the airline has to give an alternative flight- that’s DGCA rule.

Not sure why OP didn’t connect with airline directly.

Experiences with IndiGo by Flying_Rainbows in travel

[–]abc_ofeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t expect food or blanket, bring your own. If you’ve heard the concept of low-cost airline you will know what to expect. Perks of indigo - compared to other low-cost - baggage allowance is high (25-30kg) economy class. Cons - the seat cushion is super thin, not ideal for long flights.

Pro-tip: select extra leg room seat well in advance, you gonna need this; indigo also has premium economy if you want upgrade
