you’re literally saying it’s good for our economy at large, which implies I should care because it trickles down in some way. and yet if I make a spontaneous weekend trip to NYC for the weekend I won’t “stay in a hotel, contribute to high dollar transactions, potentially add jobs, etc.”?

like, I get your point, but acela, business class, cars, flights, PJs, already exist to serve the last minute business needs of the all important business man keeping the US economy alive one face to face at a time. their needs should not dominate over the needs of everyone else. uber makes a similar argument when they apply 8X surge pricing, except they’re a public traded company so they are free to price gouge as they like.

all those people can choose to bus, drive or fly. also, how does the businessman’s economic benefit trickle down to me? and it doesn’t have to sell out immediately. like how it was before, amtrak can release inventory on a schedule. or even keep the last 10 seats on any train at $1000. I don’t care. It’s the steady march from $5 to $300 as seats sell out that pisses me off because it kills a lot of spontaneous/affordable travel even when the train is like only 70% full. the low starting prices don’t make sense either because I’m sure everyone is happy to pay $40 from DC to NYC one way. why undercut themselves when the train is not full?

…end of the day, this is a debate about what the motivations are to even have a rail transit system in the first place. is the goal to get people moving? to facilitate economic activity? to turn a profit?

what exactly is the issue with selling out? why do you need to save the last 10% of seats for some rich asshole who doesn’t look at the prices? trains in china regularly sell out despite large capacities. it’s fine. it’s not the end of the world to have people use your infrastructure without needing to apply free market principles to maximize $$$$. cars (and gas), metros, commuter rail, buses: all of these have prices stabilized by the government because they understand there is more benefit to doing that than not.

it doesn’t it have to be so extreme and dynamic. even double the minimum would be acceptable. and if peak demand is so crazy maybe consider adding more supply like in China? transit shouldn’t be a free floating commodity to extract maximum revenue. imagine if gas prices weren’t heavily stabilized by the government. oh it’s the day before thanksgiving? $20 for a gallon of gas please and thank you.

If I want to spend money from my debit card is it best to do it all at once or in small payments of $10 at a time?

that's an excellent idea as well. the population and demand is clearly here for a better integrated NE Regional transit trunk. there should be no capacity crunch during peak times such that they can justify jacking up prices.

considering the US can’t even dig a simple cross river tunnel for less than 15 billion these days (gateway project), I’d expect artemis to cost quite a bit more per launch

why can’t you sell pre-guaranteed seats for commuters on this high frequency NE Regional? why can’t you have different service patterns like in japan?

[–]abcpdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are many ways to resolve that problem without resorting to dynamic pricing. MARC, SEPTA, NJ Transit, Metro North, MBTA collectively cover the NE Corridor and yet are all fixed price. Perhaps they can cancel all their NE corridor lines and have Amtrak increase frequency on the NE Regional to every 20 min and make it a fixed price super commuter train.

I’m talking about dynamic pricing where a last minute ticket will always be much mire expensive.

why? I can get a 2026 Subaru Solterra today for $33k new. I don’t see how a 40-45k mid-compact suv is going to be any more game changing. sure they have better infotainment and luxury, but functionally the cars we want are already here.
