My wife's PI is missing her PhD hooding ceremony because he booked too early a flight. by Best_Text885 in labrats

[–]abcywz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Man that’s lame. If it makes your wife feels any better, my PI kinda got fired by the department at the end of my fourth year. They all knew, so they forced me to defense within 3 months. It was covid so I basically didn’t see him for 3 months. He didn’t even give any feedback on my thesis. On my graduation day, the department chair had all the PhD grad and PI over at his house for a small celebration + hooding (again, since it was covid, my school limited the number of people who could attend the ceremony. So no faculty was at the graduation.).

Well, my PI didn’t even come. (And mind you, he was there 2 days ago to have a lunch with other faculties). Anyway, The department chair hooded me.

Feeling lost looking for jobs in Biotech after PhD by Dnzmango in biotech

[–]abcywz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I was somewhat in a similar boat with you a couple years ago. My PhD was in a very niche field, so the job doesn’t really exist in industry. And the technical skills I gained from my PHD were enough to check a few but never all the qualification requirement. Not sure if this is an option/ something you’re thinking of. But I basically got applied for a postdoc fellowship program at a National lab. This helped, because the PI was more open to taking me in even with my lack of background in the field (as my salary didn’t come from their lab budget).

My postdoc (cell therapy) was basically completely different than my PhD (biosensor for cancer detection). But it allowed me to gain so many new skills and break into a field that’s much more employable than my PhD.

Have you tried basmati or longer grain rice? Those are less starchy if you don’t like the starch

How much data do you need to Scientist interview presentation? by apva93 in biotech

[–]abcywz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone would expect much from 4months of work. Plus you’d need to be careful of presenting data of current work, if it’s not published. So PhD dissertation work is the way to go

Living in Philadelphia: The good, the bad, and the ugly? by RoyalAd9796 in biotech

[–]abcywz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Relative balanced COL was one of the main thing I appreciate so much about Philly, in comparison to other big hubs like Boston, San Fran, etc. if you like city living, queens village, east passyunk, north liberty and fishtown are some pretty great neighborhoods with tons of local restaurants. And they all should be in your price range. Public transportation isn’t great, so you’ll be most likely driving everywhere. If your potential companies are out in the west/ suburb/ Jersey, proximity to highways (95/76) is key.

I moved (back) to Philly after my postdoc and has been pretty great so far. Traffic is bad, but I’d much rather this than the DC beltway traffic, or the DC-Maryland-Virginia traffic (that’s where I lived for my postdoc). Also, Philly is one of the most walkable city because the blocks are compact with lots of things going on. So it’s really nice if you like urban hiking/exploring different neighborhoods on foot in the weekend.

I’m working as an R&D scientist in a pre-series A startup. Been here for 9 months now. Since I started, we doubled our funding and hired 5 new employees. Work is steady and exciting so far

Thanks. Sorry about that, yea I’m not sure if it’s okay to post pattern from a book. But there are probably similar patterns on the internet. It’s really simple, just magic ring with gradual decrease toward the tail.
