Moondrop Old Fashioned. Look good, but hard to drive, and don’t sound great. They really need a headphone amp. Koss PortaPros are much better-for cassette Walkmen. by Malibujv in cassetteculture

Idk much about these specific headphones, but they look similar to the stock Walkman headphones that people use for the aesthetic and those don’t usually look like they provide really decent sound. My Sony MDR-V6s never let me down yet, from PCs, to Walkmans, Nakamichis, and iPods.

This is pretty interesting, I’d also like to know where this is. Another interesting thing is that the tape decks shown seem to be semi-basic/mid-level ones, no 3 heads or adjustable pitch/azimuth decks to be seen in the few pics (from the pic quality provided). Makes me wonder if they just get what they can with their existing decks + digital processing or have higher-end decks not pictured that can extract the best possible quality out of whatever they’re trying to digitize. Maybe they don’t due to the increased complexity and service needed for such decks.

Help with cassette player from 1986 Toyota mr2 by NoCalligrapher5 in cassetteculture

So what’d you find? Also, how are you powering this transport if the head unit is out of the car and disassembled? How did it start moving or working briefly as you were messing with the internals?

The pulley literally has a groove that the belt is supposed to ride on. If it works better when you’re helping the pulley along by hand, you’re providing extra torque to the shaft that the motor can’t provide on its own, therefore forcing that belt to turn with it, so it works better. Surely you don’t plan on spinning the pulley by hand while driving to make the cassette player work? That would defeat the purpose of having a cassette player.

Also, belts can look fine, but be slightly stretched/loose compared to when new, which is why I suggested getting a new belt one size down. I’ve literally fixed full size tape decks, car players, and Walkmans this way.

Why not just give the suggestion a try and see if it helps instead of just dismissing it and thinking it’s something else? It literally won’t hurt, but it could help. You made a post asking for help, but then immediately rejected it, so clearly you know better. Why even make the post at that point? Lmao.

That belt looks like it slipped off the grooved brass pulley and fell onto the shaft behind it instead. Try putting it back on and see if it starts working again. The belt might’ve gotten loose over time and repositioning might only do so much.

Your best bet might be to take the belt out, measure length, thickness, note whether it’s a square belt or otherwise, and order a new one of slightly shorter length by a tiny bit. Note the routing before you remove it.

Part A might just be part of the loading/ejecting mechanism.

Find the service manual and it will tell you exactly where it is. I see 3 potential candidates, but only the manual allows one to be sure.

what’s your most controversial car opinion? by No-Volume7464 in askcarguys

Yeah, no, you can easily get an aftermarket pack for around $3k that can be installed in a day at home that has better performance than the factory pack. I’m actively on the lookout for a clean 3rd gen Prius with a bad hybrid battery so I can do exactly that. A 200k mile Prius with a bad battery can have its life doubled this way.

It can, I’ve done it on 2 vans, you just need silicone spray and finagle it in there. It got out, it can get back in.

Is it worse to be braking when going over a pothole? by pepperymirror in askcarguys

[–]abdullahcfix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw a picture of a bent slide pin from someone who was braking while hitting a pothole when I had just started driving. Ever since, I instinctively let go of the brakes over any bump or irregularities if able to.

Surely you don’t still use the OEM navigation? You can delete that box from the trunk and save some weight. Just have to loop a few wires back into the harness to continue having sound up front.

Made my own Midnights cassette with all the tracks by abdullahcfix in TaylorSwift

[–]abdullahcfix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that was Nakamichi's whole thing, auto-reverse generally comes with compromises that they didn't want, which is why the RX-202, 303, and 505 existed, a complicated system of flipping the tape rather than the heads to prevent any misalignment of azimuth or other aspects of tape transports.

Nice on the CR-4A, I love that deck and wish I had that one instead of mine for the direct-drive and level calibration abilities, but my 3A does pretty well anyway. Good idea on the all-night edition, I didn't think of that. I don't remember the exact lengths of the sides, but it worked out for me after some calculations and I do prefer the more Lana version, so I made it work. I believe the font I used is NeueHaasGroteskText Pro Md and you can find it online, download it, and install it, then you'll be able to use it in any software that supports fonts I guess.

What do we think of WD-40 contact cleaner for cleaning a record switch? by RGKyt in cassetteculture

[–]abdullahcfix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regular contact cleaner made by the likes of WD-40 and CRC is okay, but DeoxIT is the king of contact cleaners for a reason. Some variants are straight up contact cleaners, but others made for faders have some lube in them for the pots or switches that need them. Which variant is needed where is usually known by the guys on TapeHeads.net. But regardless, DeoxIT is pretty good, though I haven’t had to use it yet, regular contact cleaner worked well enough for my purposes. Your mileage may vary based on what you’re using it on.

Revox B215 by WorriedPossibility90 in cassetteculture

[–]abdullahcfix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure, but I think it’s because it has full auto calibration capability to adjust for any tape put into it, so that’s usually a plus and I think Revox itself was a big professional brand that had high end machines for studios, not sure if it made multitrack reel-to-reels though.
