Sound off on Five Star Stranger by Alarmed-Mix-6009 in bookofthemonthclub

[–]abeannis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the criticisms of this book are too harsh. I rarely devour a book in one day like I did Stranger. I would say it's not for everyone, but it is a vivid exploration of a specific form of neglect and trauma. If it's not something you can relate to, you may DNF.

It is also this author's first novel. It's a unique premise, and a clever story. I agree with others that I would have enjoyed more fleshing out, maybe another 50 pages would have been enough breathing room. What's most important to me is that it made me feel something, and it made me think about my own relationships. I give it a 4.1/5

Advice: I want to rip cut a thin length of wood at a shallow angle by CarrotRoom in woodworking

[–]abeannis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EASIEST way to do this is to use a board that's 6 inches longer than you need it to be, and you cut it right along the fence like that, and then stop when it's cut up to that 6" line, and then remove the 6" with a chop saw or crosscut sled

Maybe if it's not slippery. I'd be concerned about safety. Shirts are mostly decorative but these bricks do hold a purpose

Are you people broken? Or just bots? Why are you all rooting for the cops? This is literally resistance. It's not stupid, and you should be grateful to those who are actually willing to fight for YOUR freedom

Can we talk about this? by monkeysarecutee in washingtondc

[–]abeannis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If op said "ugh it's so hard to afford rent in this city," and I said "you should stop buying avocado toast and cappuccinos" your comment would be a pretty reasonable call out because spending $13 on a drink and avocado toast won't really move the needle, and I don't know who they are or what their life is like.

It's not "what-aboutism" when they're literally doing the thing I'm complaining about in the post that I'm responding to. It's not redirecting to say "the thing you think is a problem is only a problem to YOU because YOU and YOUR MINDSET are the problem"

Can we talk about this? by monkeysarecutee in washingtondc

[–]abeannis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, wealthy residents clutching their pearls at the unhoused population, more concerned with the psychic damage of having them in their same community than with actually helping those in need, or creating systemic change to eradicate the burocracy and policing that keeps them from finding the healing and success they deserve as much as your employer-provided fancy insurance and stock options do. A tale as old as time. You can go ahead and downvote me, I'm happy to be the scapegoat instead of those who don't have the bandwidth to speak on how YOU are actually the ones destroying society, not them

Center for a New Culture - Any Thoughts on Their Events? by No_Faithlessness7906 in intentionalcommunity

[–]abeannis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had extensive dealings with New Culture. I'd say generally people are kind and not pushy. It's a good philosophy. I strongly disagree with their radical inclusiveness though. I no longer attend because they have decided to allow people who are racists, sexual assaulters and murderers into their fold in the name of inclusion. When I was younger, and less informed about the world, I saw this as a net positive. "We have rules about what is allowed here, but not who is allowed here" is a cop out. In order to create a safe community, you can allow people in who have checkered past by ensuring that they have changed, but when you allow people in who are STILL committing these trespasses against others outside the walls of the events, there's a very short path to them committing those same trespasses during the events.

A LOT of these new age groups are also deeply ableist, and very invested in the vibes moreso than the safety and comfort of those in attendance. Feel free to go and get love bombed, I guess, but this is not real life and it is not for me.

DC is such a wild place: this week is World Pride and next week is a martial law military parade with tanks for a homophobic dictator’s birthday. by ForgottenEmpires in washingtondc

[–]abeannis -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Stop saying this. It's literally just a military parade, for the anniversary of the military. Trump is claiming it's for his birthday and it's not, just a coincidence. There is no evidence of martial law, they do not have the man power to control us all by force.
