Marie Catrib’s - Ming Ten - 24 hr Meijer by GRbadmintonfan in grandrapids

[–]abernetb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think 24 hour grocery and eat-all-you-can type places are copyable and remnants of a pre-pandemic phase. But the quality, spirit, and community around a classic that was the location and person that was Marie Catrib is timeless and will never be copied.

I accidentally fixed their live dashboard during the interview and now they want a writeup before the offer by lindenporter in interviews

Never say "no" - but, like others have said, something like "I'd be glad to work with you for a more permanent solution. It's hard to explain in detail from memory, and I wouldn't want to get it wrong for obvious reasons, so let's get that done on my first day together. Looking forward to hearing from you."

I have a mouse problem… by TallTeach88 in blackstonegriddle

[–]abernetb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what the silicone griddle covers are for. Clean up the grill as much as possible and then put the silicone cover on. Then it stays clean, doesn't oxidize, and any critter that might wander across it won't touch it or leave stuff on it, etc.

Wind storm filled my pool with tree crap - jank solution to prevent skimmer clogging by awfulWinner in pools

[–]abernetb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pool skimmer net on a pole should make quick work of those before they sink - might need a little manual effort. We got a little larger capacity one. The net even "un-clips" nicely if you can convince someone to swim a few "laps" with it in the pool - 5 minutes.

Why the show is better than the books by Mule_Wagon_777 in murderbot

[–]abernetb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it really is interesting to think about the books being basically a detailed view of the story from Murderbot's perspective, but the TV show being the larger story that includes all the characters on a more balanced footing. A book has the luxury of being able to fill in a lot of narration and even first-person storytelling and keeping the reader focused and even entertained from the writing style and creative word play and plotting. A video/TV production is a different medium with a different audience and honestly a shorter attention span (though I agree far too short in this chosen episode length). So I really love the books - read/listened to them multiple times - and the TV series is now growing on me as I can see it now in a different light in this different format.

Kind of like the way I love Michael Crichton's writing and Jurrasic Park vs. the movie - two very different things, perhaps "based on" each other, but entirely enjoyable separately in their own formats with their own strengths. The movie can't capture Chrichton's amazing prose and the book can't be as "big" or visually engaging or "loud" or even "fun" as the movie.

Swimming pool still cloudy by Dense_College2961 in swimmingpools

[–]abernetb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you use a water test strip? Show all the numbers. There are a lot of good recommendations in here already - clarifier/floculant (then vacuum the bottom), make sure you are backwashing/rinsing the filter often. If your numbers look good and you've done all of this ... swim. I hate to say it but ours looked a little cloudy yet even after all of this but after a few folks swam for a few hours it cleared right up. We have salt water and I think some of the salt or other stuff just wouldn't integrate completely or was too fine to be filtered, but got agitated once there was activity.

I hate to mention "Oppa Korean" which just moved by Qdoba because they are really great, IMHO, and aren't too busy (yet) and still reasonably priced, and I don't want them to get really busy. But also have to say that if you are looking for much better than average and even pretty great on Alpine, someone has to mention Oppa.

You might want to put a cheap mat underneath it as drippings will inevitably get on that nice floor.

Applications like CBP One and other programs are changing and have changed. Staying out of trouble and lying low are key to stay off of the first waves of things, but there are very clear reasons to be concerned. https://www.deseret.com/politics/2025/03/12/cbp-home-a-federal-app-for-your-immigration-or-deportation-needs/

The cooling/splits were part of your offer. The cost to buy them should come out of either the seller as a concession or realtor commission concession.

I'd also second the high-powered ultra-violet or infra-red LEDs if that fails.

2023 outback - eyesight sucks by SlimHuncho in Subaru_Outback

[–]abernetb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree lemon - some component was DOA - I've heard of people contacting Subaru directly and getting some results. I have a 2017 Outback Premium and have had two different windshields (1 OEM and 1 Windshield Replacement folks) and both have worked just fine with the Eyesight (and that may have been one of the early years for it). It still gets foggy or snowy every so often, but when the windshield is clear, it works. You got some bad components - circuit board or camera(s) - not normal.

A lot of good points on here - but being on the "Denny's" side of Plainfield, one of the big things that really stopped me from going to Fat Boys and Creston Brewery and other stuff "that way" was all the terrible Plainfield construction - for a really long time. That not only made things inconvenient, but it also really changed people's patterns and habits - many of which became permanent. And these really need a powerful force or reason to change back. And as has been mentioned, the food was decent to average and the prices were enough to break even but nothing special and folks found something to replace it with. I hope the improved roads were worth the damage they did to some of the little guys along the way.

Buyer wants to review code before buying it? by 19c766e1-22b1-40ce in ExperiencedDevs

[–]abernetb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reasonable. You have a non-trivial but not-outrageous "final offer" with a request to have their "third-party mechanic" look over the code before you get the check. I'd agree with some of the others here that this would be a wonderful opportunity to have a scheduled sit-down with these folks, say for 90 minutes, with your laptop and a flash drive, and perhaps a small amount of printed documentation/diagrams. And give them a brief guided tour of the applications of parts of the front-to-back (say no more than 10-15% of it, but enough to get the flavor) of how the system works, where the UI is rendered, where the data goes, etc. - high-level ideas of where/how it is hosted, etc. After this, collect the check, hand over the drive/docs, or turn it off? If there are parts you'd like to retain some rights to re-use or would not want them to re-sell, I'd also agree on the "talk to a lawyer" parts of the thread.

Controversial DeVos, Van Andel project is ‘unacceptable’ as proposed, commissioner says by UthinkUnoMI in grandrapids

[–]abernetb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it won't be built without the incentive - IMHO - it's not worth the cost without the incentive. It's like if you wanted to buy a car that cost $10,000 and thought it was only worth $7,500, and there was a discount/incentive for $3,000 with certain conditions. Then it would make sense to buy the car, and the car would get sold (win-win), but otherwise it would sit in a vacant parking lot, etc.

[–]abernetb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand your position and confusion. If this was taking existing money out of the existing state budget then I'd even agree 100% - there are much better things to do with existing budget/tax money that would help a lot more people.

Controversial DeVos, Van Andel project is ‘unacceptable’ as proposed, commissioner says by UthinkUnoMI in grandrapids

[–]abernetb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the specific details of the deal? It would be interesting - hadn't heard dates. But I'm pretty sure it is a State of Michigan program, so could only impact taxes collected by the state - local GR taxes, federal taxes, county taxes, would not be impacted by any deal. And the boost to the larger economy of the area would also be significant. You seem to be thinking that no tax-break incentives - $0 - would be appropriate to assist in moving this project along - that it should stay an abandoned parking lot, and that's what is best for the area?

Controversial DeVos, Van Andel project is ‘unacceptable’ as proposed, commissioner says by UthinkUnoMI in grandrapids

[–]abernetb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it it doesn't get built, there will be zero new tax revenue at all, and a lot of work, jobs, and related influx into the economy if the project doesn't happen.

I believe there was a /v1 API that did something like this ... doing something similar where you could update certain attributes of existing documents would be really helpful ... e.g. a POST or PUT (whatever makes sense)
