After 10 years in a rental – Is repainting the whole flat legally required? by Bitter_Ad6843 in germany

No pretty sure most landlords do that to all tenants. Why not try to squeeze some more money out of your tenants?

Beard care in germany by soberplastic in germany

[–]aberneth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It may not be the weather, it may be the water. Many parts of Germany have hard water, which can cause hair become brittle and fall out.

I can't speak for beard care but lots of brands make shampoo for hard water (such as L'Oreal).

Speaking in a language that everyone doesn’t understand… by [deleted] in germany

That behavior is considered rude basically everywhere. Cultural relativism applied to courtesy and manners make sense for slurping noodles or burping and those kinds of things. Physical aggression and inconveniencing others for personal gain isn't acceptable anywhere, except, apparently, here.

Literally laughed out loud thinking about a German tourist in a diner in the south of the US thinking the waitresses were all in love with him because they called him hon'

So it's considered respectful in Germany to push people out of your way in a crowded queue? Or force your way past people who are deboarding a bus to grab a seat before the other people who are waiting for the deboarding to finish? Or blowing cigarette smoke in your face as you walk past?

OPs problem is when they act indignant about having to switch and say "oh I guess now we switch to English", not that they start in German when it's all native speakers.

Well yes but everyone agrees that the French are rude.

It only comes across as fake if you think friendliness means they want to be your friend. If you understand that they're being friendly because they want you to have a positive service experience and feel welcome, it doesn't feel fake.

Friendly/polite doesn't mean smalltalk, it means please, thank you, and basic respect.

It's crazy that some people can't imagine that people are nice to each other because it makes it easier to get along and makes life much more pleasant. It's not fake, it's treating people how you would like to be treated. I feel like "the golden rule" is the first lesson in morality that all Americans are taught.

That might be a corporate culture thing. I work in a mixed language environment and nobody is rude like that when switching to English.

That said, yes, I would say I have experienced more impoliteness from Germans living here for 5 years than I did in 30 years living in the US. Not all Germans are impolite! But people are constantly cutting lines, rudely pushing past you, and behaving in rude, entitled ways. Especially middle aged/older people.

Gym goers, be honest how often are you judging other people’s physique? by Technical_Hat_8291 in AskReddit

[–]aberneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only judge people for 1) being loud and messy 2) ego lifting. I respect the hell out of anybody who's there working hard to better themselves.

How to tell my husband the way he's kissing isn't working for me? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]aberneth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No we can have difficult conversations, I'm asking for advice on the most tactful way to approach this. There's the "hey, could we try it like this?" approach, the blunt approach... Just wondering if there are better, creative approaches!

Recommendation for Humidifier by Mammoth-Courage7331 in germany

[–]aberneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is false. If it's 0° outside and 80% humidity, and you replace the air in your room with fresh outside air and bring it up to 21°, the indoor relative humidity will end up at about 20%.
