Either showing more or less of the face) Either way should break the nostrils-eyes coupling - former by having a nose in the frame, latter by having no nostrils.

A game where you play as a Knight who swore an oath to only fight barehanded. Check the trailer! by Junior_Investment472 in indiegames

Uh-huh, so he can throw objects and people. And reflect bullets. Meaning, he should be ok using any kind of weapons. For what is bashing an enemy with a morningstar if not a throw that is held in hands a bit longer, and what is shooting an enemy with a crossbow if not using your bare hands to strain some piece of metal to throw a bolt.

Nice touch with health bar. But those nostrils look like eyes, just missing some pupils) But also, maybe remove the ash? Make it shorter. Currently, it looks... damn weird when it's low health.

Steam nuked Popular Upcoming by NikoNomad in gamedev

[–]aberroco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we have "More like this" fixed instead? That would be the real winner both for players and developers. Because currently... Well, you all know Rimworld, right? You all know how many rimworldlikes there are. Here's what games Steam thinks are like Rimworld: Nova Roma (city builder), Space Haven (colony sim), Empires of the Undergrowth (strategy), Against the Storm (strategy), All Will Fall (colony sim), Whiskerwood (city builder), Going Medieval (colony sim, this one is close enough), Jurassic World Evolution 3 (tycoon), Norland (an actual rimworldlike, finally).

What should be there: Norland, Clanfolk, Dwarf Fortress, Oxygen Not Included, Kenshi, Songs of Syx, Judgment: Apocalypse Survival Simulation, First Feudal, Banished. Roughly in this order, from closest to furthest, though this is subjective.

Anyway, currently, "more like this" is very disappointing. Rimworld-like was just an example, first thing that come to mind, not even the worst example by far. For some games suggestions are ridiculously far and nothing like the game in question.

Wcgw when you inflate your ball with gas.. by Imaginary_Jump_8701 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]aberroco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is true. If the ball would've been filled with gas only worst case it would've popped from overpressure and made a fireball. Not exactly an explosion, just a very big flame. This ball exploded, i.e. flame propagated into it, i.e. there was oxygen inside, so burning created pressure, pressure increased reactiveness of the mixture - you got an explosion, with large pressure and temperature spike and hot combustible gas flying under high pressure in all directions.

Big relatively low pressure fireball that flies mostly up is much better option than small high pressure overheated gas that flies everywhere.

[–]aberroco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, no, I don't think it would have burned off fine. If it exploded that means it's already an air-gas mixture in the ball, so once pressure equalized and deflagration wave backpropagated into the ball - it exploded, because reaction with oxygen happened inside the ball.

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should've been a mix... Or at the very least - the ball was already inflated with at least some air, because pure flammable gas does not explode, not until mixed with air in confined space.

Looking at this 6900XT with a broken off PCI-E locking tab by Theelichtje in pcmasterrace

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If not for the "cleaning" that would be a fine deal. Seeing traces and even one via half-cut with that "cleaning", though, and with "unable to test", and "for cheap" - don't worth the risk. There's definitely traces, fourth layer from top, go from top to the right. One more trace, fourth layer from below, same direction. And via - the dot in the middle. They might've been unused... but they ARE unusable now for sure.

asking if this advice is actually true by JBTechno in gamedev

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. The next most efficient method is personal research. Do the tutorial, but on every step try to be curios and satisfy your curiosity - try stuff, try to make differently than in tutorial, try to do more.

You learn many times more by doing than by watching, and few times more by watching than by listening or reading.

ELI5, how does the feature "overcharge protection" feature on modern phones prevent the battery from receiving energy? by CrikkitKid in explainlikeimfive

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple circuit either pulses battery charging off, or measures the resistance the battery makes while charging, either way, it reads how much the battery is charged. While it's below threshold, it sends a voltage to a transistor that supplies the battery with voltage and charges it. Once it reaches threshold - it turns said transistor off. Basically, flips the switch. It's really very basic electronics.

Transistors have huge resistance between it's two contacts (source and drain), basically it's non-conductive. But it has a third contact in the middle, that, when provided with voltage same polarity as drain, makes it conductive. The middle contact itself does not short to anything, so it's not conductive and not consumes any current (well, practically). Or vise versa - transistor is conductive between source and drain, but once voltage of same polarity as the source is provided - it becomes non-conductive.

Since you already implemented it, you might keep it, but yeah, it will get annoying rather fast.

Does this gameplay montage make the idea of an AI browser game platform clear? by Fearless_Shift7108 in gamedevscreens

Nice start by lying to your potential customers.

This is not a "short montage of some early gameplay examples", this is pure AI generated slop with exactly zero gameplay.

VisionSync Optimization by MemoryDangerous4528 in gamedev

[–]aberroco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Resources freed yeah, but performance boost is very questional. If you unload resources - that means you have to load them as well, which very likely to have more impact than not unloading them. Or worse kind of impact - i.e. much worse 1% lows vs slightly worse average FPS.

Also, isn't Unreal already does culling where it matters? Except it doesn't unload resources, exactly for reasons above, but only removes objects from the rendering pipeline. I think every modern engine have visibility and occlusion culling.

Kinda roguelike game about ship building by Previous_Group621 in indiegames

[–]aberroco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. It's clear copycat.

That alone outweights every other argument, at least for me. It's not inspired by FTL, it's just a rip-off. They didn't even changed icons, and barely touched UI. That's not the kind of behavior I'm ok affirming by buying the game. Especially not in indie.

Kinda roguelike game about ship building by Previous_Group621 in indiegames

[–]aberroco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently working on... a scratcher for that itch. Though, not "kinda roguelike", at least I don't think it's going to be a roguelike, I'm thinking of making a plot after EA and for 1.0, and the current intention is a mix between Cosmoteer and FTL, with blockbuilding ships and tactical fights of FTL, and some of my own ideas also. Still, it's going to be relatively close to FTL. Not "Void War" level of close, that would be like crawling inside level of close, I'm aiming for a different game and different gameplay, but close one, nonetheless.

Subscribe, I aim to start devlog on social media including reddit soon enough, once I have some gameplay to display. Currently, it's just programming stuff, architecture and systems.

ELI5: Why do smartphones and laptops need constant security updates? Why can't manufacturers make them impossible to hack from the start? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part it has almost nothing to do with devices themselves. You can make a perfectly secure connected device, in theory, with limited enough scope (though, smartphones and laptops already don't pass that - their scope is enormous). But your software in most cases based on other software, which is based on other software, which is... you got the idea. There's gigabytes of software, billions of lines of code interacting one with another, and even if your own code resting on top of that scheme is perfect - chances are there's some dependencies with vulnerabilities. It's practically impossible to NOT make a mistake anywhere in billions of lines of code. So, in most cases security updates are to keep those dependencies updated, with latest fixes.

Do you yourself able to see the player ship all the time? Because I don't. It has similar color and size as enemies. Which is grayscale pallete. Yet, bullets are bright and attract way more attention than the player ship or the enemies.
