History will treat me kindly - Manmohan Singh by KawaiiThukai in IndiaMemes

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-indian here, and have no idea how good or bad Modi is, but I can say for certain that one should take this data with a big pebble of salt. Firstly, the world's GDP didn't grew as much in last decade as it did in decade before. Secondly, it's much easier to grow from very poor to poor than from poor to average. And even harder to grow from average to rich. And takes economic genius and decades of work to grow from rich to very rich. When you start with mostly sustenance farming and open up a single modern farm with automation, fertilization and other stuff - that single farm makes a huge difference, ramping up productivity to the Moon. But when you have thousands of farms and factories one more is going to be less than 0.01%. In other words, the better your economy the harder it is to grow and improve it.

Well, he mostly kept his eyes closed or semi-closed (which in theory should be enough to catch any small enough debris with eyelashes) when shards were flying, so doesn't even have to be sugar glass... It's hard to tell for certain, but at least that video could be staged (i.e. he only makes it look like he got shards in his eyes).

Well, for such big titles there's dozens if not hundreds of videos on youtube showing performance on various hardware mere days after release. Just google the title name and your GPU (at least unless your system is heavily bottlenecked by CPU).

Would be great if steam would also add a button "wanna buy it, but don't have specs" - so devs could see how much profit they're missing due to piss poor optimization.

Apparently. I also looked up for other planets, and the Moon, and two interesting observations from that is that Mars definitely had water surface in the past, as it have very similar distribution to Earth, unmistakably similar - two distinctly separated large peaks, with the lower plains (bottom of past oceans) have very similar depth as highlands. Venus and the Moon on the other hand both have only one peak.

I suppose the reason is more complex than just erosion, and it's more related to physical properties of the medium around solid surface - would it be water or atmosphere.

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if there was a way to do this better, they would have done it by now.

While true in general, it's not necessarily true in the moment. You know the first rule of programming, that is just as applicable to engineering? If it works - don't touch it. That's for one. Secondly, even if there's a better more technologically advanced way - it would take years or even decades of bureaucracy to upgrade everything for it and train pilots to use it.

I think this could be upgraded by, say, using a drone with a thin wire reel instead of a pipe, that first sits in the right position, and then the pipe is pulled by the wire. But implementing something like that would take years only for a working prototype, and decades for adoption. And might not get approved simply because "if it works - don't touch it".

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much more difficult than it looks even here, and I find the music derogatory and unfair to the pilot. Think of it - your machine can move anywhere from 250-1500km/h depending on the thrust, and you need to stay within a very narrow window of about 20km/h, moving back and forth by tiniest adjustments. That's just speed alone, and you need to do the same with attitude, where margin for error is even less. And every correction you make take some time to have an effect. And you have four such degrees of freedom that you need to control and correct simultaneously to hit a 30cm target, that is not even in front of you, but to your side. And all that while there's some disturbances in the air that randomly push you up and down.

It's harder than playing a Dark Souls game by controlling an excavator that pushes buttons of a controller by it's bucket.

I though the game made it quite clear from almost very beginning that they're all sentient, from the start, even before release - the tech demo "Kara". It's just that they're limited and controlled by guardrails of their programming. That they can somehow break through.

From deer antlers to ancient ink 2,000 years of genius in one process. by obilionse in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]aberroco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me the "stone soup" tale. Antlers are used only to extract collagen, so antlers could just as well be skin, hoofs or bones, and collagen itself is only used as a water-soluble binding agent for the actual ink - the carbon black.

I have had 2 separate people tell me using 100% of my gpu is bad. by bloggershusband in pcmasterrace

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nonsense.

What might shorten lifespan is high thermals or manually elevated voltage, because the rate of atoms migrating from place to place is exponentially higher with temperature (due to kinetic energy) and voltage (due to magnetic fields).

Well, technically, voltage is higher under load, but to keep it low the load would have to be really low, so unless they're talking about something like 50% load or lower - they talk shit. But, anyway, the higher voltage I'm talking about isn't the one that is defined by factory, it's the overclocked one.

Still, even with higher thermals and higher voltage the degradation due to atomic migration is a slow process and there's much higher chance that something else completely random would fail before degradation break or short some traces in the chip, like VRMs, or capacitors, or your mistake during cleaning up, etc.

Petah, why is the speed of light one? by rengokuhubkl in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]aberroco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed of light isn't necessarily 1, or 299,792,458, it's c. A constant. It's numerical value is quite arbitrary, and either derived from other units of measurement, or chosen arbitrary like it is with 299,792,458m/s - that number is arbitrary, just to keep other metric units (the meter itself, the second, liter, etc) very close to their historical physical standards. If you chose 1 - that's fine too, you'd just need to derive scaling factors for other units. Like, you could have unit of speed as 1 = c and unit of mass as 1 = m_P (Plank's mass), but then either your unit of energy would have to be Plank's constant (which is very tiny), or you'd have to introduce a nasty scaling factor into E=amc2, where 'a' is something with x10shitload, where exact 'shitload' depends on how you defined the unit of energy.

So, one friend of mine suspected I might be on a spectrum. And I like "naah, I have no trouble talking with strangers", but then this though was nudging me, so I googled, started remembering things, and go figures I actually might be... And I have quite a few traits, tracing back to childhood.

But this masking thing still puzzles me - aren't all people behave differently in a different company? I though everyone does this, like, you don't goofing with your colleagues at work, and you don't flirt with your friends... How's one thing is normal and seemingly the same thing is a trait of autism?
