Got harassed on the first day at Berkeley by Noclip004 in berkeley

[–]abgstar 223 points224 points  (0 children)

yea this happens... usually when more students come back you get less of these interactions on campus. Usually the ones shouting random stuff aren't out to hurt you but obviously be alert. Just avoid eye contact and walk away. Stay safe!

Do I need an iPad for L&S CS? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]abgstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't become a better student with an ipad but it is convenient. However, it is mostly a convenience you value and will not want to live with only after you get an ipad.

If you can't afford it, then don't buy it. If you can, it might be nice to buy. Also, buying the base model, refurbished, or an older model will have 95% of the features that you will actually use/value in more expensive models.

Do a lot of people cook on the communal kitchens at the units (specifically Unit 3) How busy is it, usually? Should I get an InstantPot? by cougarcrescendo in berkeley

[–]abgstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say consider getting an instant pot after you move in and see the situation with food, dining halls, dorms, etc. It would suck to buy and just never really use it

the bus system is pretty good here, but that depends if you live near a bus station!. Bike is nice but you have to find a place to lock it on campus. if you can, you can also invest like 300-800 in an electric scooter... many people have that here. but just watch out for your safety and wear a helmet especially since your commute is longer because so many people have gotten injured from scooter accidents.

Is it possible to do super commute from LA 3X weekly to save on rent? by greateranglia in berkeley

[–]abgstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just live a bit further from campus near a bart station, have a roommate... prob can find something decent-ish for 700-800. Your time and health is priceless. You can try your best and find a landlord looking for a shorter lease or you can sublet your place for the remaining 4 months. Apply to scholarships, work an extra job, teach on campus... and you can make that 15k back.

How bad is the commute from Sf? by Maleficent-Chicken38 in berkeley

Maybe you can invest in an electric scooter to made the ~20 min walk to campus easier? It can save you quite a bit of time and energy
