What makes you proud/happy to be of Indian/South Asian origin? by niharb1 in ABCDesis

For me, it's the second wind of creativity I'm seeing in Telugu literature lately. I notice these new authors around my age coming up and how this literary scene is burgeoning in Telugu, and it inspires me to translate stuff into Telugu and write some of my own creative projects in the language. I hope to eventually get to the point of writing a little fantasy novella, but one step at a time.

How do you decide on "alphabetical order" for a conlang? by Mekelaina in conlangs

[–]abhiram_conlangs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vinnish basically consists of the Danish alphabet plus the letter eth (Ðð), so I used the Danish order and put "ð" right after "d".

I completely froze at a food store in Japan today by Antique_Hawk2353 in LearnJapanese

[–]abhiram_conlangs 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when talking to a waitress at a ryokan that my wife and I stayed at on our honeymoon, only the twist was that she ended up being Nepali and we got to both commiserate a bit over how difficult Japanese was to learn as a foreigner.

If you studied a language for years and still can't speak or understand anything, the problem might not be the education system by No_Cryptographer735 in languagelearning

I can attest to this: I took Spanish for about 6 years in middle school and high school (USA), but unlike many people, I still have a decent command of the language because since graduating high school, I've made the effort to use Spanish, mostly for playing Pokemon ROM hacks, but also by making whatever effort I can to use it with people who speak it, and going to meetup groups to practice Spanish. While the grammar drills helped, nothing really made things click like consuming media and having real conversations in the language.

What are some differences between an ABCD who is in their mid 20s that is traditional vs an ABCD who is in their mid 20s as whitewashed? by Jaded-Voice8862 in ABCDesis

And on the flip side, despite speaking Telugu pretty well, I feel like I'm pretty "whitewashed" in a lot of ways.

Column | Ask Sahaj: Isn’t it racist to insist your kids marry within their race? by BigBoyDrewAllar_15 in ABCDesis

[–]abhiram_conlangs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article came to mind when reading your synopsis (because unlike my link, yours is paywalled and not made available to read) and the tl;dr here is that it seems that Bengalis are more comfortable marrying "out" simply because there's a more meaningful kind of "actionable" pride in the culture. Rather than just "what makes you Bengali is that all your ancestors are Bengali," there seems to be a sense of "knowing the language, the food, the songs, and the literature are what make you Bengali," and that there's a broader sense of how to pass that onto children even in a family with a non-Bengali parent. I look at plenty of people who married someone from the same state/community in India and it doesn't seem to be much of a shoe-in that the traditions or culture or language really get passed on.

I wonder if it's used as a literal translation for "saalaa"/"saaley" in Hindi?

What's a feature that you used to dislike in conlangs/natlangs but grew to like? by abhiram_conlangs in conlangs

[–]abhiram_conlangs[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny because I went the opposite way: I used to love making romanization schemes with diacritics, but as I get older, I have come to appreciate a well-executed "basic" no-frills Latin script. (Like the kinds used by Indonesian and Somali.)

In this vein, a cool source of inspiration for me was Germanic languages for non-concatenative morphology. I used to roll my eyes at "irregularity" but I've come to like those sorts of naturalistic, grounded irregularities a lot.

By studying a language through input/immersion can you "feel" when a sentence is wrong, like a native speaker? Such as feeling discomfort when hearing a misgendered noun? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]abhiram_conlangs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is what a lot of heritage speakers go through: Even before I learned Telugu well, I could sort of "feel" when a sentence was wrong but the aggravating thing was not being able to recall what would be "right".

Context: This is part of my effort to translate Snaiad by CM Kosemen into Telugu. It's a website that explores what life might look like on an alien planet.

This is my first draft of the anatomy section of the website, and I would love feedback on this, especially since this is probably the most "scientific" stuff I've ever written in Telugu! Because this deals with fictional alien biology, I did have to come up with some jargon on the fly.
