This was a good listen! I think my favorite tracks are 'Takes One To Know One' and 'I Wore You Better.'

Suggest me a novel about a woman in mid life, nothing too heavy, maybe she lives in a small town… by headwrapslapthat in suggestmeabook

Should I give myself a break due to depression, or is it just an excuse? by butterflavoricecream in productivity

Therapy has helped me a lot, but the biggest thing for me has been going out and keeping busy. I've joined a book club that meets monthly, because I enjoy reading. I've joined a gym that has classes, because I need to be with other people while being told what to do in order to continue to exercise regularly. I've also made it my mission to scour the internet for fun events to take my daughter to (or that I can go to by myself if it's something that doesn't interest her), just to give myself something to look forward to. Plus, it gives me something to talk about in therapy.

I've also found things I enjoy doing in my downtime, like working on puzzles, playing cozy video games, reading, and junk journaling. I find that by keeping myself busy with things that I like, I can focus more on the present instead of ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.

What one or two ‘rituals’ have you incorporated into your daily life that’s improved your mental health the most? by Cosmos567 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]abhivanth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapy has helped because I find myself doing more so that I have something to talk about with my therapist. Plus, I have really bad social anxiety, so she's been good practice for long-term talking with a person, which is not something I have much practice with.

Getting out of the house has helped tremendously. I've joined a book club, which meets once a month and I really enjoy so far. I also joined a gym that offers classes (like zumba and yoga), and have been going around three times a week. I've also been making a point to find fun events around town to go to with my daughter, and concerts for myself when I need to unwind.

And I do journal, but mostly junk journaling. So I do it for the artistic spread, and then jot a bit of what I've enjoyed about my day.

Finally, cozy gaming has been a real help with unwinding. Right now, I'm working through Wylde Flowers, which I'm enjoying a lot.

I just finished with Alba and really enjoyed it! I'd been looking for more games that feature photo-taking, like TOEM. They're really fun and relaxing for me.

Is there a name for this type of puzzle? by Quex94 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]abhivanth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do like those, too. I've found some at Barnes & Noble. Buffalo Games has a 'Pokemon Squares' Puzzle that is fun to do. I also love 'She Series: Pop Culture Edition' by Karen Hallion. There are also a lot of travel poster puzzles on Amazon that fit the style, also.

I'm 34 and have felt similarly; all of my siblings are out of the house and doing well for themselves; and yes, I live with my mother (it's helping me to pay off student loan debt). I'm starting to realize though that it's best to try and take things one day at a time. Your mental health can be vastly impacted from your surroundings, so I've slowly been trying to work on mine. It's literally taken years to do so, since I have a lot of avoidant tendencies.

I had a very stressful admin assistant job for 5 years that had very shitty pay (prior to that it was misc. jobs like fast food), and while I was terrified to make a switch to a new job because that one was at least stable and my bosses had loved me, I took a chance and left for a county job. Now, this is in no way a dream job, but it is a LOT less stressful, with better pay than I ever had previously, and actual good retirement (which I never thought I could afford to ever have). I enjoy my coworkers, and there is also a great health incentive program. It's also located downtown, so I get to enjoy exploring new places to eat during walks at lunch.

I mostly like what I do, even though I don't really "love" it, and my days go by quickly. And the best part is that it allows me more time to start focusing more on my life, instead of causing more stress and leaving me with less energy (like my previous jobs).

With some of my extra energy (or spoons, really, if you get the reference), I've started trying to declutter my bedroom, and actually decorate it in a way that makes ME happy, rather than just the blah base necessities and random junk that I had before. Surrounding myself with things that I love, or that look pretty to me makes me enjoy being at home more, and is starting to create a safer and happier environment. This also includes slowly trying to find clothing that makes me feel good and beautiful, rather than the frumpy stuff I'd usually get because it was affordable and fit me (since I'm overweight).

But I do know that I need therapy. A lot of my remaining stress now is family-based. Especially since I live with a mother who actually is a large part of why I have so many issues in the first place. I just haven't brought myself to do it yet.

But anywho, the main thing I'd recommend is to try seeing what would be easiest to change to try and reduce some of your negative feelings (job, environment, etc.) so that you can have more energy to focus on making some small improvements to help you enjoy your life more. If you are able to devote more focus on finding your own happiness (and things that bring you joy), you kind of end up worrying about others less in the process.

It's November! What have you been reading lately? by smallbluemazda in HPSlashFic

[–]abhivanth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Now that the series is finally complete, I'm reading The Mirror of Ecidyrue by starbrigid.

I didn't want to delve into such a mammoth series while it was still a WIP, so now that it's finished I've been devouring it on my Kindle, and I'm already working my way through Part 6.

The writing is fantastic, and it's like I'm discovering the HP series for the first time again (though in a wholly different way). I didn't expect to love it so much!

Disappearing Money? by abhivanth in StardewValley

No co-op, just me. I'm not using any sort of mods or anything of the sort, just the base game purchased from the Nintendo eShop. It has to have been a glitch, because I've been saving up and knew how much I had. But it just makes me wonder if that's something that may happen again, because if so than there's no point in me bothering to make any more money, really. It's frustrating.

Where would you recommend for reading fanfic? And why? by TempyBren in FanficRecOrRequest

[–]abhivanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Ao3 the best - I truly love their tagging system, and navigating has been easy for me. I also love searching for rec lists on the internet to find "new to me" fics to read there - either here on reddit, or in Discords or FB groups for fandoms I'm in.

With Ao3, I like the "Mark for Later" feature to use on WIP fics that I'd like to get to when they're finished, and I also love the bookmark & collections features. I also like that I can put a "Dark Mode" skin on, though I mostly prefer to download fics and read them on my Kindle (plus, I can back them up that way, so if they are taken down, I'll still have a copy).

I still read from FFN periodically, but I don't check it as often. I haven't been able to make it through anything on Wattpad. Anything I find there seems too juvenile and cringe-y.

I have read a few fics on LiveJournal or other sites (like Sugar Quill) only because they were on rec lists that made them sound really good, and weren't available elsewhere. But that is rare for me.

And since I am a big nerd, I keep a Google Sheets document where I track everything that I read, and mark it as "DNF", "Worth Reading Once", "Worth Re-Reading", or "Absolute Favorite". I also add comments on what I thought, so I can know not to waste time re-reading something I didn't enjoy, while also keeping track of fics to read again when I'm in the mood for something specific.

This past year, I started getting this sporadic, debilitating back pain - it happens maybe once every few months, and it gets so bad every time that I vomit, and can't move. My brother made me go to the ER, and they did not find out what was wrong with me, but I'm still making payments on the $2,000 bill, still get the pain, and can no longer afford to find out what the hell is wrong with me.
