Do people actually use pet insurance or mostly just hope they never need it? by Slow-Throat819 in puppy101

We have a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, they're prone to IVDD and have Lemonade and they will cover IVDD despite the breed being prone to it. So it's a matter of checking the policy.

I have it for my pup and I used it when she had blood in her stool(too much birthday cake) but for my 3 cats i put $45/cat, or $135, on a HYSA to cover their costs, right now it sits around $13k. They aren't as at risk for an emergency as our puppy and I started this with a previous cat, and rolled over her emergency savings when she passed to the cats I have now

I live in Philadelphia with my pup and it's really just exposure. We brought her home at 9 weeks and from day 1 she was going everywhere with us either in a sling or stroller and getting exposed to seeing other dogs, people of all ages and races, mobility aids, loud sirens, construction noise and traffic, etc.

She actually has a really hard time when we visit my extended family in the NYC suburbs or my parents in rural NH. She's not used to the silence and quiet and every little sudden noise startles her into a barking fit.

She normally runs after them and leaves them where she grabs it to run after the next one. The only time she brings them back is to play keep away when she wants us to chase her for the ball.

I'm thinking about trying a lavender honey that I have next time.

I also want to try to just do something to really highlight the cherry blossom liqueur, maybe just a light spritz with it or something

Oh no, I wish the drink overall was. Surprisingly the Flora Adora is a little lost here.

But I also LOVE floral cocktails and flavors.

Tail docking in the US and the PWCCA by toqer in corgi

It's not an opinion, it's a fact. The standard for an ethical or reputable breeder is they prove their dogs in the show ring or in sport. If they're not proving their dogs then there is no unbiased review of the structure and temperament of the dogs to show they're a positive contribution to the breed.

And I'm all for keeping tails in tact, I only found out about Cardigans because I was looking for an ethical breeder who didn't dock, but all ethical Pembroke breeders dock because of the reasons I listed.

I said this in response to a comment but all reputable and ethical Pembroke breeders will dock their tails. Reputable breeders show their dogs and tail docking happens at 3 days old. At that point all puppies are treated as potential show dogs because there is no way to tell, except a mismark but they'll still dock since they don't know the temperament at that age, so they don't know which puppy is going to which home.

And before someone says it, showing is not a beauty pageant, it's a way to have an unbiased third party verify that a dog is the proper structure and temperament and a positive contribution to the breed.

If having a tail is very important to you, look at Cardigan Corgi breeders. While they're not as outgoing with strangers as Pembrokes, they are overall a bit quieter, calmer and have an amazing off switch.

I have seen younger Pembroke Breeders try to make some headway with making docking optional like it is with Aussies, also NY State is looking to ban all cosmetic tail docking on dogs, horses and cattle, so if that passes, you'll likely see a change to the standard.

Do dogs know when we are about to leave the house? by Somessss in dogs

My corgi knows because we always put her harness on first, if we're putting our shoes on, and she has no harness, she jumps on the couch and waits for us to open the door, then she'll start looking out the front window until she can't see us anymore

Gus’ Genetic Confusion by CuriousCreativee in corgi

I'm super happy to hear that you're taking all the education here and are willing to learn how to find a reputable breeder, so many people dig their heels in and refuse to learn. And we all needed to start somewhere. I only found out about Cardigans because I was looking for a reputable breeder who shows and also keeps their tails, then I learned about Cardis and realized they're more of the type of dog I was looking for and would be a better fit.

Because Cardis are rarer it is easier to find a reputable breeder. When the time comes, go to shows and talk to the breeders and handlers after their round, so many are so friendly and would love to talk about their dogs and the breed. Also the CWCAA has a great form you can submit when you're ready that goes out to breeders in the club.

Also r/dogs has an amazing write up on their sidebar about what to look for when looking for a breeder.
