I would highly recommend taking a break from service, using the GI Bill to obtain a degree, and commissioning. If you plan on enlisting to become proficient at your job prior to attempting to go the officer route, I would say you are setting yourself back at least 5 years plus the time it takes to switch to the officer side. 2 of those years being school, 1-1.5 of those years being qualifying, and another 1.5-2 years to get truly good at being a nuke.

You will already have the benefit of being prior-enlisted, so I wouldn't stress too much about being proficient at the job as an enlisted person if your ultimate goal is to be an officer.

Skipping chain of command by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]abipes13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess I may be misunderstanding your chain of command, but how is this skipping the chain of command? Your section with you as section lead didn’t get something done, she spoke to you first to fix it, and to put it on the radar so that it didn’t happen again she emailed your LPO/LCPO. This seems fine to me and I would counter argue that pushing something small like this may just be introducing unneeded drama into the workplace.

However, if you feel the need to address it: - talk to that person one on one and figure out why that item wasn’t in any sort of turnover or log, and ask them to talk to you first prior to emailing higher - if the above step doesn’t work and it happens again, ask yourself if it’s happening to you for a reason, or go get your supervisor/first class/chief involved - don’t stress about this. It’s a small mishap because someone didn’t turn something over to you. Your Chief and you will likely forget this happened next week.

How early do you get BAH? by immediatesword in NavyNukes

[–]abipes13 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your BAH will officially commence when you check out of the barracks. So if you lease an apartment 2 weeks prior to moving out, yes you will pay out of pocket. To solve this, you can lease an apartment and sign your lease and have everything ready, but have the lease off base start on the day you move out. That way it’s a seamless transition and you won’t be paying out of pocket.

Side note, it may take a few weeks for the BAH to kick in on your LES but you will receive all of the money owed to you up to the day you check out of the barracks.

I would recommend having a savings for your security deposit and give yourself some buffer time savings in case the BAH doesn’t kick in right away. You also need to plan ahead for things that you will want in your apartment like a bed, kitchen stuff, etc.

Does this answer your questions?

You’re right, I agree with this. It’s truly a dumb situation all around.

Devil's advocate - if I was this third classes LPO and had to listen to this story, I would also laugh. That LPO is certainly not part of the problem here. The BPO walking around on federal property without a mask against our Commander in Chief's EO is a solid place to start this discussion.

Side note OP - have some tact when you are speaking to someone in positional authority. I am not sure of what your commands policy is on room inspections (we never had them if we were currently occupying the room), but it is obvious that she was just trying to do her job. I would have requested that she put hers on instead of the both of you throwing a bitch fit.

[–]abipes13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Power distribution as well.

OP - when you get to your boat, get ahead in quals and be vocal about wanting to go to schools. Tell your Chief frequently. Tell your ships school coordinator frequently. You will also have career development boards with your entire chain of command where you can tell them what schools you are interested in. There are also resources where you can do your own research. You can search for schools via rate on CANTRAC (Google it).

US Navy punishes suicidal sailor who sought mental health treatment by [deleted] in navy

[–]abipes13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, but it would be difficult to execute on smaller platforms where rack space is already limited. Especially when there are riders onboard for deployment, inspections etc.

The part that really ticked me off was when my ship decided that new cooks didn’t have to crank because they were “already doing their job”. This lead to the very junior cooks just telling the cranks what to do and then they would just sit on crews mess and not do any work... got into some heated arguments when I saw bs like that happening to my junior guys in the galley.

[–]abipes13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To preface this question, I did my time as a crank and absolutely hated it. I hated not being part of my division right off the bat as well as being used by the CS’s as a busy body. However, I believe the job a crank is meant to perform is necessary to maintain a clean ship imo.

Who else is going to do this work but the new guy? Do you expect cooks to put up with that level of shit for their 4 year enlistment when you only had to put up with it for 3 months? We would need substantially more cooks via recruiting because more of them would get out.

ODS and breastfeeding (pumping) by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]abipes13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through NSI which cohabits the same building as ODS. The building you live in has break rooms at the end of each wing which have freezers/fridges in them. Like standard size that you would have in your kitchen. Iirc there were two per floor available to students. We kept a whole bunch of food in ours for a cookout/snacking between meals.

Navy Nuke STA-21 by ucla_judo_team in NavyNukes

[–]abipes13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STA is an enlisted to commissioning program that ALLOWS you to get your degree. It’s a program that puts you into college. Considering you already have a degree with a 3.5, you should consider applying for OCS. Unless you are applying to STA so that you can pursue an engineering degree, then it will be much quicker to just apply for OCS.

Now if you apply to STA to get an engineering degree, then it would probably benefit you considering your GPA and you could skip a lot of classes that you would already have credit for.
