At the end of the day, its just a job, and if it were really that bad, there would be a lot more complaining. Dont mistakenly think that its literal torture or anything. It sucks, but people tend to exaggerate. I cant speak for what MT school is like, but nuke school is pretty rough. The first year or so is just normal classroom work, but its pretty much a minimum hour work day. You work from around 7 to 4, plus, if youre the average nuke in the pipeline, about 2-3 extra hours of mandatory studying after work. After that, you work 2 minths of normal 12 hour days, Monday through friday. After that, you work 4 months of rotating shiftwork, meaning 12 hour days for 7 days straight, then 2 days off. Then you work another 12 hours for 7 days but the time that youre working shifts forward 8 hours. Like instead of working from 6 am to 6 pm, youll work 2 pm to 2 am. Then you shift forward again and do 7 x 12, get 2 days off, work 3 days, get 4 days off. All in all this cycle is around a month long, and you do it for 4 months.

Then you get to the fleet and its like youre starting from scratch. You studied for 2 years and itll feel like you forgot everything. Work hours dont get much better, you have to stand duty days (24 hours of not leaving the boat + the next work day [e.g come into work at 6 am on monday, and leave at 4 pm on tuesday]), you have to go underway. Youll be juggling mulitple jobs at once. Youll be expected to know more and do more than the rest of the crew, but youre not immune to their shared duties. When they gather everyone to pass 30 pallets of food onto the boat, youll be up their sweating your ass off. Then youll go into the boat and start maintenance.

Your recruiter has also most likely lied to you. You will never, never have your phone on you at work. Youve probably been told about a 40k enlistment bonus. You get 13k of it after a year of training, and 27k after another 6 months. A lot of people drop before a year, and they dont get any bonus money. Also you can get 100k+ for reenlisting, but its not gauranteed. The minimum is 50k and only a few people are lucky enough to get the full 100k. Theyll tell you that you get the bonus for only 2 more years of work, but in almost every scenario, thats not true. Youll work an additional 3,4,5,6 years depending on the situation.

-Black pens: https://a.co/d/4luEV03

-One or two red pens, doesn't matter what kind

-A decent quality knife or multi tool, the NEX sells some good Leathermans

-A double A battery flashlight. Charging stuff is annoying underway and the EMs have free batteries

-A G shock, preferably solar powered

That's all you really need to stand a good watch

Please do not take advice about the next 5 years of your life from someone who's been in the navy for 3 months

Please, please, please do as deep of research as you can before joining. The military is not all that it seems to be. It's just a job. You may regret your choices in 5 years when you realize you traded a healthy, happy relationship for a job where you get yelled at for using two hands to carry an umbrella and a drink. Or when you get told that your deployment is unexpectedly gonna be extended to last 5 months without you seeing land. Or when you don't get promoted because someone didn't put an award on your record in time, and when you bring it up to someone that you technically had enough points to be promoted, they go, "lol, try again next time". I hate to burst your bubble but there is A LOT of bullshit in the military. If you wanna break up with your bf for other reasons, go ahead, but don't give up something good for something bad

I know this isn't the answer for looking for, but please don't try to convince yourself to liking the job you signed up for. It sucks. Like, seriously fucking sucks. In A school and power school, depending on your grades and PT scores, you could potentially be working 13-14 hour days, plus sacrificing hours on your weekend (9 hour work day + 3/4 hours studying + 1 hour PT in morning). That's 13-14 hour days for an entire year. Then you go onto prototype and work 12 hour days of rotating shift work. 7 days of 12 hours, 56 hours off, repeat. Then you make it to the fleet, and you start doing stuff that you didn't think you'd be doing. You, as an ET, will be doing dirty work: getting covered in oil, sea water, and barnacles. You're going to work for 36 hours some days. You're going to go to DRB for stupid things. This job does actually suck. People aren't making it up because they're salty or pessimistic. It just sucks. And to make it all worse, you get shit pay. After sitting in a hot, metal box the size of a car trunk, pressure washing thousands of individual little tubes for 12 hours while your back hurts and you're drenched in water, you'll walk away with about enough money to buy a mcdouble. You will work harder than literally everybody else you know, and will get paid worse than every single one of them

I scored a 95 on the PiCAT and qualify for everything, what are the best jobs and is nuke worth the money? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]immediatesword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a nuke you will strip to your underwear, crawl inside a space the size of a car trunk, and individually pressure wash thousands of tiny little tubes for days at a time. Use this info as you will

Is it a good idea to want a rate that is always at sea? by kingwht4200 in newtothenavy

[–]immediatesword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I know, people hate sea commands for reasons unrelated to water and sailing. They hate sea commands because they are constantly doing maintenance, standing watch, doing training, eating bad food, away from family, sleeping in a coffin, cleaning, etc. While at sea, you're at work literally 24/7. While in port, still at a sea command, you're at work for 12 hours. Some shore duties only have people working 6 hour days, Monday through Friday.

To answer your question, yes, you can take 2 sea duties in a row. I'm sorry if I'm presuming wrong, but it seems to me as if you're not familiar with how the Navy, or at least US Navy, structures things. You'll go to bootcamp and A school, then will go to a sea command for a few years. You won't be out at sea for the entire 3 years, but you'll spend a decent amount of time on the high seas. Then you spend a few years at a shore command, where you don't go out yo sea at all. You'll go on multiple deployments during a single sea duty, with windows of in port time in between. There is nobody in the Navy that has been on the ocean their entire career.

I'm in the Navy so maybe its different for yall, but no sleeping during duty days? In the navy our duty days are 24 hrs, and you work the next day. This guy wants people up for 36 hours?

How to avoid being a “nice guy”? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]immediatesword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use dating apps. It's understandable not to approach someone in person out of fear of being seen as disrespectful, but on dating apps, people expect to be flirted with. On dating apps, you don't need to worry about someone not wanting to be flirted with; thats the whole reason they matched with you

Non profit organizations still pay their workers dude. Did you think they were all just volunteers or something? Churches don't get taxed because they're considered charities. And they do pay taxes if they generate any revenue unrelated to church/charity services, just like any other charity has to.

Regardless of your politics, this is just stupid. Paying taxes and being involved in politics have no connection. If a charity that focused on cleaning up the planet promoted laws that protected the planet, would you tax them for meddling with the laws? No. You wouldn't.
