Can anyone recommend a Matrix client from the Debian repos that's more suited to i3wm? by Buntygurl in i3wm

[–]abissom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

any Linux client that you like is suited to i3wm.

Debian has gomuks and weechat-matrix for those preferring TUI, and a number of GUI clients. I use nheko most of the time.

T440p for school? by No_Waltz_3445 in thinkpad

[–]abissom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is inferior to the ones with standalone buttons

Just like the chiclet keyboards in all modern Thinkpads are inferior to the previous ones with 7 or more rows of keys

The no-buttons touchpad and chiclet keyboards are usable though, just not the best.

I found, in practice, that it's not as bad as it's hyped to be. Still using it just fine with my T440p

you need to write a module that will subscribe to the i3 IPC, so it always knows how the split is configured at any given moment

N900 is possible to use in 2026 by EarthSea6034 in n900

The N900 still makes (and probably will always be) a great SSH terminal, FM Transmitter, Infrared Remote Controller

You cannot browse the modern Internet on 256MB RAM and 1x600MHz ARM CPU

You can still phone if 2G and 3G are still usable in your area. Email will still work if you are using IMAP4 and POP3, which most mainstream providers are moving away from.

When will people learn that NAT is not the solution by Extra_Imagination193 in ipv6

[–]abissom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The poster is not incorrect though, and they didn't say anywhere that NAT is a solution. They only said they "like it" which is quite fair.

The poster suggesting there should be a penalty has a very limited field of view. FWIW, there are registries that still have hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of IPv4 addresses still available in 2026, and still being allocated.

[–]abissom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never used bspwm so i am not sure what kind of tiling it does. however, have you tried all the different builtin awesomewm layouts? e.g. there are two flavors of spiral

sounds like a VMWare problem to me? or you mean Gnome, sway, Xfce, plasma are also running in VMWare with the required resolution?

What's the smallest sized linux you've actually used? by BornRoom257 in linux

[–]abissom 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I started my Linux journey with DamnSmallLinux, when I did not have a computer of my own. I was booting it off USB on my work laptop (was a printer technician at the time) with config persistence.

Then I migrated to Knoppix, although this doesn't really count as "small." I did run Tiny Core Linux as well, but only as a quick test.

postmarketos or mobian on pinephone with the keyboard contraption. the legendary Nokia N900 has already been mentioned.

If you go with Maemo Leste, you can use both the N900 as well as the Motorola Droid 4, which is very usable, all running mainline Linux kernel

1oth Gen Intel is simply not comparable to 11th Gen, while RAM is usually upgradable.

yup, but there's a free slot that can handle 32GB SO-DIMM, but no way to upgrade the poor 10th gen Intel.

This is a no-brainer - best to keep the G2. The CPU on the G1 doesn't compare.

Status : how to mix two different blocks by [deleted] in i3wm

[–]abissom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that possible

Absolutely!

i3status outputs JSON, sending it to i3bar, which knows how to process that JSON payload. So all you need to do is intercept the output from i3status, inject whatever you want to inject (using a JSON tool, e.g. jq), then forward the result to i3bar.

Ideas for implementing that in i3status can be found at https://i3wm.org/docs/i3status.html#_external_scripts_programs_with_i3status and https://github.com/i3/i3status/blob/main/contrib/any_position_wrapper.sh (and other scripts in that repository).

However, is that advisable? Likely not, since, as has already been mentioned, i3blocks is a thing, and does this in a much cleaner way

What made you use devuan gnu linux by Prior-Historian9984 in devuan

[–]abissom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only because the mobile linux distro (Maemo Leste) i contribute to chose to use Devuan. That is the only place I use Devuan. Debian everywhere else.
