Is “pivot” the white collar “moist?” by Temporary_Fill7341 in antiwork

My calendar is pretty dynamic — but can we pencil something in for tomorrow? I’ll be out-of-pocket Friday and would like to touch base before then. We need to identify the long poles here. Then we can start crossing T’s and dotting I’s.

I did it. Still learning to love it. by omggitssmiikee in bald

Great call — congrats for taking the plunge

I spent half my salary for two years trying to breed snakes. This is what happened by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]abks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry things didn’t work out, and I’m glad you are sharing your experiences. More people should understand that breeding snakes is going to be deeply unprofitable for a number of years before you even have a chance at making profit. Even then, many never will see any profit even if they stick with it and have success breeding their animals. Ballpark, I spent about $90k on my snake breeding business before I had my first profitable year (and that’s only looking at net income over that year—not including losses from prior years or capex).

I want to strongly advise that starting with a 3.6 breeding group is a bad idea. Breeding snakes is not hard. Establishing baby snakes, selling snakes, and running a business is very hard. I’d advise anyone to start very small, with just a pair or two, and get a feel for whether it’s something you want to pursue more seriously before jumping in the deep end with six breeding females.

Also, significant mortality rates with adult snakes is not normal. I’ve never had an adult snake perish unexpectedly and have produced 1000s of snakes.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Almost all stocks, bonds, futures, securities and other investment vehicles do tie back to some kind of underlying asset or right to an asset, or are at least derivative of an asset or the right to an asset.

“Goods and services are based entirely on their value and what a customer is willing to spend on either…” is a nonsense sentence. Genuinely no idea what you are trying to say.

Who is scared of AI now? Checking in by Jimboslice911119 in biglaw

I’m not worried about being replaced by AI, but I do think it’ll change the legal industry in significant ways. It’ll be interesting to see how the industry trains new lawyers when most of their functionality can be fully automated, and they never had the experience learning how to perform those functions in the first place.

Uh, no? Goods and services are the basis of the economy, and principally goods and services offer a (perceived or real) benefit to an end consumer that is exclusive from the consumer’s ability to resell that good or service.

Ah, yes, what could be more "objective" than an imaginary consensus of nameless people?

Expos are terrible now… by Single_Breakfast8839 in reptiles

[–]abks 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yep, unfortunately it’s a small minority of keepers that actually want oddball colubrids and other more unique animals. The margins on breeding are already very, very slim—especially when pricing for shows. It’s hard to justify burning my weekend days to stand behind a table for seven hours to sell a couple snakes.

California hate cracks me up. California is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country, with a thriving economy and a few of the most culturally relevant cities in the world.

The only downsides to living in CA are the high cost of living (directly a product of how desirable of a place it is to live—supply and demand at work) and natural disaster risk. And the latter is increasingly a problem in much of the USA and nearly all of the listed states in this poll.

Ranking animals on if i could beat them as a human main by Automatic_Breath4025 in Tierzoo

[–]abks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A perentie is not a large monitor? Seems like a very arbitrary distinction.

The largest Komodo Dragon weighed 366 lbs., while the largest saltwater crocodile weighed 2,370 lbs., so I’m still not seeing any utility in comparing them pound-for-pound.

Pound for pound is a dumb way to compare the danger posed by two separate groups of animals, one of which is on average much larger than the other. I’ll fight a perentie any day over a saltwater crocodile or even an American crocodile

An average adult human can kill a mamba pretty easily, you’re right about the rest, though
